Let’s Pray

This morning is a perfect wrap up of what we have been talking about the past two weeks

it also finishes laying the groundwork....building the foundation of living under control of the Holy Spirit

living as a true Christian

I have been working through a lot lately with God but one thing that keeps coming up is something Jesus said and taught

John 14:12

John 14:12 ““Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”

I am so convicted when I read these words of Jesus

where are my greater works

i believe this is literal....true Christians should be doing greater works than Jesus did here on earth through the power of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit

Our job is to believe and go all through the power of the Holy Spirit

today lays the final parts of the foundation to enable us to do these greater works!!!!!

Romans 7:21-25

Romans 7:21–25 “So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.”

Delight In God’s Word

We started looking at this two weeks ago and again last week

We delight in many things but I am afraid very few truly delight in God’s Word

Many don’t even read or know God’s Word let alone delight in it

I want to spend quite a bit of time here this morning because this is life changing

if you will just submit and ask God to truly show you how to delight in His Word your world and the world all around you will be changed for eternity

When we used to do RU..>Reformers Unanimous a Bible based addiction program......actually it was a discipleship program but one of the driving forces was God’s Word

One of the sections of God’s Word that drove the program was

Psalm 1

Psalm 1 “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”

This is a perfect blue print for turning one’s life from being of the world and walking in the flesh to being spiritual and walking in the Spirit....living as a true Christian

I want you to spend time here this week really diving into the entire chapter

it is wonderful stuff

Delight

Here in Psalms it means

Pleasure, concretely, a valuable thing, things desired

In Romans it means

to rejoice in with oneself, feel satisfaction concerning

Do you take pleasure in God’s Word?

Is God’s Word concrete in your life?

Is God’s Word a valuable thing.....something you desire

not in word but in deed

What does your fruit say

what does your time spent in God’s Word say

Do you rejoice in God’s Word in yourself

do you feel satisfaction about God’s Word

this is describing a lifestyle centered around God’s Word

God never changes

Malachi 3:6

Malachi 3:6 ““For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.”

Hebrews 13:8

Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Since God never changes you can place your full faith and eternity in Him

His Word expresses and teaches His character

therefore as you delight in God Almighty we should also delight in God’s Word and commandments

So why pastor josh did you say delighting in God’s Word was life changing

Psalm 112:1 “Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments!”

Blessed Hebrew noun meaning happiness

notice not wealthy

notice not healthy

notice not anything to do with physical things

happy

why because God is good and His Word is true and never changing

you can know Him deeply and intimately because of His Word.....that makes you happy

that is blessed!!!!

How does God’s Word bless you?

He Leads You

__________

Psalm 119:35

Psalm 119:35 “Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.”

God knows life on earth in these fleshly bodies is hard

Jesus was persecuted and killed when He was in a fleshly body

satan hates God

satan hates God’s Word and ways

satan hates God’s children....Christians

you and i cannot defeat satan on our own

we are no match for him

however through Holy Spirit and God’s Word God will personally guide you

His commandments clearly show you His path

when you delight in God’s Word and commandments you stay on His path

Psalm 119:105

Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

God’s Word is light

it eliminates

drives out darkness

but notice here God uses specific language

Light Hebrew glisten, candle

God isn’t using His flood light

He isn’t lighting up the night

no this is very close proximity

a candle

a lamp.....think of those coleman camping lanterns

lights up just enough for a step or two

He lights the path through His Word but just right in front of you

no distractions so you can stay on the path

He Transforms You

II Corinthians 4:16

__________

2 Corinthians 4:16 “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.”

You and I truly understand that we are dying

our flesh gets weaker as we get older

it breaks down

it is wasting away

however if you recall our flesh is not our concern as Christians

we are now only concerned with the spiritual not the physical

we are only concerned with our inner self

our new creation

our spiritual self

because of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word our inner self is being renewed every day

you die more and more each day to your flesh and walk more and more in the Spirit

Ephesians 3:16

Ephesians 3:16 “that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,”

you are strengthened

you are weak on your own

your flesh is weak

you are destined to fail without God

but with and in God you are strengthened

through the Holy Spirit your inner being is strengthened

the more you feed your inner being through obedience and discipleship the stranger you become

You Are A Wretched Man or Woman

Paul boldly declares that he is a wretched man

If Paul is a wretched man you and I are even more wretched

our flesh is evil and wretched

Galatians 5:17

Galatians 5:17 “For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.”

our flesh is opposite of Holy Spirit

our flesh is opposed....the enemy of...at war with the Holy Spirit

We have looked at this....our unsanctified flesh desires evil

it desires sin

it desires to rebel against God at all times and turns

James 4:1

James 4:1 “What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?”

We talked two weeks ago that everything is Spiritual

look at what James says

your quarrels

your fights that you have with each other are spiritual

why

because you surrender to sin and your flesh instead of the Holy Spirit

your flesh is wretched

so what do you do

how do you survive

Jesus Delivers

Romans 7:25

Romans 7:25 “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.”

Jesus Delivers

Jesus is coming again

I Corinthians 15:52-53

1 Corinthians 15:52–53 “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.”

Jesus is coming to deliver us

in the twinkling of an eye it will be over

no more flesh

no more sin

no more death

no more pain

no more tears

Eternity with Jesus!!!!!

no more mortal body

no more being perishible

you and i will put on immortality

delivered

however until that day happens we through the power of the Holy Spirit must endure

II Corinthians 5:4

2 Corinthians 5:4 “For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.”

your fleshly body is a tent

a temporary dwelling place

this world is not our home as Christians

we hang on to it like it is

we fight to stay here like it is

we get so wrapped up in the world we miss Jesus

we miss the spiritual because we are so caught up in the physical

the closer you get to God the more you will delight in His Word

the closer you get to God the more burdened you will become

the end is coming and as a Christian you win

since that is the case you are now free to delight in God’s Word and commandments because of the joy that is coming
