The Final Round/ Midnight Cry

Recap: We have watched as God has moved step by step, dismantling every false system Egypt trusted in. The Nile,—the land,— the cattle, — the body/ mans health, — even the sun.

God has proven that He alone rules the heavens, the earth, and life itself.

Text: Exodus 12:12–13 “For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.”

So why is this plague different?

For starters, This plague is both judgment on Egypt and a direct judgment against the gods behind Egypt’s system.

Second, its personal! God is addressing individuals on a personal level.

With this plague there is no class differentiations, Egyptian or Hebrew, Every house in Egypt faced the same night of judgment, but only the houses under the blood were spared. God is addressing people on a personal level, calling to account where there faith, trust, and loyalty lie.

So far everything the Egyptians have trusted in has failed!

Now the question is, what will protect you when God Himself passes through?

The question is not will Judgement come but will there be a covering?

There is only one covering God accepts — the blood He Himself provided.

The blood was given as a sign/ token , and God said when I see the blood, I will pass over you.

Here God gives specific instructions : They were to take a Lamb without blemish, a male of the first year. The lamb was to be Spotless— Chosen, — Set apart!

They were to kill it in the evening, and take the blood and strike it on the two side post and on the upper door post of the houses where they resided.

Here the Lamb appears to represent the coming Messiah who would give His Life as a substitutionary death.

John the Baptizer said when he saw Jesus Behold the Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world in John 1:29

Lets do a quick comparison of the passover lamb and the Messiah.

1.Both were to be without spot and without blemish.

Ex. 12:5 your Lamb shall be without Blemish

Jesus lived a sinless life — 1 Peter 1:19 “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”

2. Both were sacrificed so others could live

The lamb died in place of the firstborn.

Christ dies in the place of sinners.

3. The blood marked those who trusted in God’s provision

When I see the Blood I will pass over you — The Blood protected the house from judgement

The blood of Christ protects believers from judgment and brings forgiveness. Romans 5:9 “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

4. The Blood had to be applied

lamb = It was not enough to kill the lamb—the blood had to be placed on the doorposts.

Jesus = It is not enough merely to know about Christ intellectually. Ones faith does not earn salvation; it reveals trust in God’s provision.

Faith is not earning salvation, faith is trusting God enough to obey Him.

The Passover lamb died so Israel’s firstborn could live temporarily; Jesus Christ, the true Passover Lamb, died so sinners could receive eternal life through His blood.

Ok so here is where it gets personal, — God didn’t say kill the lamb and you’re good, He said apply the Blood to the doorpost !

The application of the Blood to the doorpost was an act of faith not just mere intellect.

Now lets look at the two houses and two outcomes.

Both were in the same land

The same night

Same Judgement

But..… Two outcomes

One is covered / the other is exposed !

The Midnight Cry

Exodus 12:30 “And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.”

Here we see the gods of Egypt have been exposed and rendered powerless! None could save, not Ra, not Pharaoh, nor his magicians all were defeated and exposed as powerless!

After generations of bondage, the chains of Egypt were finally broken. God’s people are Free at last!

Now after the death of the first born Pharaoh and his people has had enough and told them to get out and take your herds and stuff with you and helped usher them out ! Exodus 12:31–33

One last important point:

Exodus 12:38 “And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.”

God is not merely destroying nations — He is reclaiming people from among the nations.

Even in judgment, mercy was available to anyone willing to trust God’s provision beneath the blood.

Because of the Blood bondage is broken, oppression has ended and people are freed!

So lets recap :

Egypt → physical bondage Sin → spiritual bondage Lamb → temporary covering Christ → eternal redemption

John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

In closing questions to ponder

Who or what are you trusting in ?

Do you have a real life relationship with Jesus or do you just have an intellectual knowledge about Him?

Simply put has the Blood been applied? Are your actions proof of your faith , are you living out what you profess to believe ?
