Introduction

(Slide) Have you ever heard, “preach the gospel and when necessary use words?” - that sounds good but it sure is not the truth is it?

(Slide) Previously we have looked at

Proclaiming the Gospel, are we ashamed?

Preparing to proclaim the Gospel

Tonight we will look at the Gospel we proclaim, is it really the Gospel?

We may have the desire, we may even have a zeal to proclaim the Gospel as it says in the Great Commission.

But is it as the Lord commanded?

There are methods that people have developed, these evangelistic methods can be successful, but again are they fulfilling the great commission, so let’s look at a few.

I. (Slide) Evangelistic method - Survey the Bible

(Slide) A general survey of the Bible and the Bible story (a look at the book; maybe the Bible in 5, or the Bible Project)

(Slide) A focused look at God’s scheme of redemption fulfilled in Christ.

(Starting in the promises to Abraham in Gen to the fulfillment in Christ)

(Slide) A multi-lesson approach leading up to a decision (this one I use often; expand on this)

(Slide) Even the One hour from home method we have previously looked at.

(short, takes about 1 hour to go through series of scriptures)

(Slide) Evangelistic Method - The New Testament Church

(Slide) on who is the Church (non-denominational Christianity) - looking at the establishment of the Church, the definition of the church and who is in the church; oftentimes this turns into why we are right and why everyone else is wrong thing (not good; not effective)

(Slide) Pattern theology - Looks at the establishment, organization , work and worship of the church in the Bible, especially in the N.T. - how we are to do things as the church

(Slide) Contrast approach - this is a comparison of the N.T. Church and denominations today

(Slide) Evangelistic Method - What must I do to be saved?

(Slide) Describes things needed to be saved - Hear, believe, repent, confess, be baptized

(Slide) Salvation through education - a more in-depth study to give full understanding what is is to be a Christian and the responsibilities of being one as well as the benefits.

(Slide) Point of salvation - This is a study with the focus not just on salvation but on the point of salvation being baptism.

Nothing wrong with any of the above methods, they can be effective and yes they make disciples, thus fulfilling the Great Commission.

But let’s continue and look at some questions that may arise.

(Slide) What is of First Importance?

(Slide) There are first or what the Hebrew writer says “elementary” principles of the Gospel.

May we look at what the writer says in (Slide) and

(Slide)

(Slide) Much time we spend maybe on secondary things that are not the Gospel such as:

(Slide) Identity of the church and it’s work

(Slide) Proper worship

(Slide) Instrumental music, Marriage Divorce and Remarriage

(Slide) Though they are important, they are not the Gospel and should be kept in secondary place to the Gospel

(Slide) Something to remember!

(Slide) Most of what we read in the N.T. outside of the Gospels is written to believers - hence it is for us to grow and mature in Christ, in unity.

It is not the Gospel and not of first importance.

(Slide) Something to consider

(Slide) If someone is not willing to respond to the Gospel, to obey the Gospel (you know the first principle) are we not wasting our time thinking they will listen, accept and apply the secondary principles?

(Slide) The Gospel in part or in whole?

The Gospel is more than telling someone what they must do to be saved.

Yes there are commands to obey by faith, but, (Slide) there are facts to believe and promises to receive and should be a motivating factor in obeying the Gospel.

(Slide) How about some scriptures?

- the riches of His kindness

- the ability to persuade men

- He died and rose on our behalf

(Slide) A point of warning:

We deprive ourselves and the person we want to share the Gospel with the power of the Gospel until they understand the reason they need to be saved and that God saves them through His promises.

(Slide) Keep the first priority the first priority

(Slide) Multi-part teachings may not get to the Gospel until the end of the series

(Slide) Life changes, circumstances may hinder or cancel a lesson series and people may drop a study.

(Slide) Don’t miss an opportunity to share the Gospel, the full Gospel as commanded by these possible things.

(Slide) again, emphasize that these methods do not lack the Gospel message, we need to remember what it says in are we making the best use of our time?

Pressing on about the Gospel we proclaim may we consider the following:

III.(Slide) Evangelistic primary principles

(Slide) Share the full Gospel - not just the commands, not just the things to do, but the things to believe and the promises to receive too

Do not forget the full Gospel is the power to save Slide ()

The fruit of the Gospel is born when one understands God’s grace - (turn to and read) Col1:4-8

(Slide) Focus on the first thing, the primary principle

(Slide) Jesus Christ and Him crucified (see )

(Slide) The gospel as Paul lays out in

(Slide) 1Cor15:1-3

(Slide Sow seed liberally

(Slide) You will reap what you sow see 2Cor9:6

(Slide) Be prepared to share the hope, in season and out (see 1Pt3:15 and 2Tim4:2)

(Slide) Be willing in all places to all people to share it so to win them to Christ (Look up and read)-(1Cor9:19-23)

(Slide) One last point PRAY!

(Slide) Pray for opportunities (Col4:2-6)

(Slide) Pray for wisdom (Jam1:5)

(Slide) Pray for boldness (Eph6:18-20)

(Slide) In closing: We are the messengers given the message to carry, God gives the increase - and the the Lord adds to the church those being saved (Act2:47) - (Slide)
