Mark 15:1–15

So He Openeth Not His Mouth (vv. 1-5)

The trial of Jesus is spectacular for many reasons, and one of which is degree of obedience to the will of the Father

As was prophesied in numerous locations, Jesus offered no defense for Himself, in every way becoming obedient to death (Ps. 38:13-14)

It is not that Jesus had no defense, but rather that He chose not to employ it -> what a contradiction of sinners against Himself!

Even against blatant false accusations from the chief priest, Jesus opened not His mouth that He might pay our (and their) sin debt

Jesus’ response to Pilate was intentionally vague, but by no stretch a lie

Barabbas (vv. 6-15)

The account of Barabbas is one of great beauty and tragedy -> the perfect picture of us

Never has 1 Pet. 3:18 been more visible than in this account!

Barabbas was no ordinary prisoner or criminal, but the worst of them all -> in character, disposition, and actions

He was clearly rotten to the core, and one to look down on -> this is why Pilate chose him

Yet we see that we are in no higher position in which we could look down on him, for he is a picture of us!

Applying Jesus’ definitions to sin, what was Barabbas guilty of that you are not, aside from carrying out the evil of his heart

In a very literal way, the just took the place of the unjust, which was spectacular to even Pilate (v. 14)

In the same manner, He has taken your place too!

vv. 13-15 are crushing when you realize your voice has been cast in with the others, shouting “crucify Him”

Every sin you have committed is another shout for His crucifixion, for it is your sin that led Him to Calvary

In your pride, you choose sin, which drives the requirement of Christ’s blood (Acts 4:7-12)

While the guilt that washes over of this may feel overwhelming, I must remind you that it was love that motivated God (Jn. 3:16)

Do not take this verse for granted due to its familiarity!!

Jesus was and still is the propitiation of your sin, and you must trust in Him for salvation (1 Jn. 2:1-2)!
