Be Seen: Treasure
INTRODUCTION
Mother’s need rest. - best gifts help a mother relax. Flowers, eating out, spa day.
Dishwasher — didn’t go over too well.
Book: how to be a better mom — probably not a good idea.
Matthew 6:19–20 ESV
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Treasure on earth or treasure in heaven?
Matthew 11:28–30 ESV
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Jesus says his burden is light.
It’s based on grace.
Ezekiel 20:12 ESV
12 Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them.
What we all long for is rest.

6 Truths About Rest

1. Rest is Exemplified

Creation
Genesis 2:1–3 ESV
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
God didn’t need rest.
He rested to show us the importance of rest.

2. Rest is Commanded

The Law
Exodus 20:8–11 ESV
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Purpose is for our rest, not our obedience,
Mark 2:27 ESV
27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
Jesus didn’t obey the pharisees teachings on rest but he practiced it.
Mark 6:31 ESV
31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.
This is why Jesus was said to have broken the Sabbath. He didn’t break the Sabbath, he broke the rules of the Pharisees interpreting what work is on the Sabbath.

3. Rest is Trust

Psalm 127:2 ESV
2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.
Anxiety is lack of trust. (Not medical anxiety.)
Ecclesiastes 4:6 ESV
6 Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.
Philippians 4:6–7 ESV
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Psalm 62:5–6 ESV
5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
Hope= trust in what is to come.
There is a bed at the end of this journey that is offering the best rest you could ever imagine.
2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

4. Rest is Allusive

We never really rest.
Rest always ends on this earth.
Sleep is never good enough.
A day off is never long enough.
Hebrews 4:9–11 ESV
9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
John 16:33 ESV
33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

5. Rest is Temporary

It is a productive Pause.
Work 6 days and then a day of rest.
Rest on earth can’t be permanent- The Fall’s curse.
ILL- Covid- a taste of rest.
People realized they were over committed.
Now we are a society where no one wants to serve others.
Churches struggle for volunteers.
Non-profits are failing.

6. Rest is Eternal

Revelation 14:13 ESV
13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”
We work now so we can rest later.
Now is the time to persevere because a day is coming where we will have perfect rest.
Hebrews 4:9–10 ESV
9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
1 Corinthians 9:24–27 ESV
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
This life is hard.
James 1:2–3 ESV
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
Revelation 14:13 ESV
13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”
CONCLUSION
2 Extremes - Rest and not work/ work and not rest.
Now is not the time to give up. It is the time to persevere.
Galatians 6:9 ESV
9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
Are you having seasons of rest? Are you persevering until the day has come for true rest?
