The Mighty Angel and the Little Book – The Mystery Nears Completion
The Mighty Angel and the Little Book – The Mystery Nears Completion
Primary Scripture Reading
1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: 2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, 3 And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. 4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not. 5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, 6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: 7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.
8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth. 9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. 10 And I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter. 11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.
Introduction
Introduction
The sixth trumpet has sounded.
The earth has experienced destruction on a scale never seen before.
But now Revelation pauses.
This chapter is an intermission—not because judgment has stopped, but because God is about to reveal something deeper.
Before the seventh trumpet sounds, heaven gives John another revelation.
A mighty angel descends.
A little book is opened.
Seven thunders speak.
And John is told to eat the scroll.
Behind the veil we see something powerful:
Before the mystery is completed, revelation is intensified.
The Mighty Angel Descending
The Mighty Angel Descending
Scripture: Revelation 10:1
“And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven…”
“Mighty” – Greek: ischuros (Strong’s G2478)
Meaning:
• strong
• powerful
• forceful
This is not an ordinary messenger.
The description is overwhelming:
Clothed with a cloud
Rainbow upon his head
Face like the sun
Feet like pillars of fire
These descriptions echo earlier revelations of divine glory.
Clouds represent:
Presence
Majesty
Divine authority
Exodus 13:21
“…the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud…”
Rainbow
The rainbow points back to covenant.
Genesis 9:13
“I do set my bow in the cloud…”
Face like the sun
Revelation 1:16 describes Christ similarly:
“…his countenance was as the sun shineth…”
Feet like fire
This symbolizes:
Judgment
Purity
Authority
Some believe this angel is Christ Himself because of the overwhelming description.
Others believe it is a powerful angelic messenger reflecting God’s glory.
Why some believe this could be Christ:
• description resembles Revelation 1
• lion-like voice
• authority over land and sea
Why it likely is not Christ:
The text explicitly calls him “another mighty angel.”
The Greek wording consistently identifies him as an angelic being.
Christ is never called “another angel” in Revelation.
The angel swears by God in Revelation 10:6.
“…sware by him that liveth for ever and ever…”
This suggests distinction from God Himself.
Behind the veil we see:
This messenger carries divine authority—but remains under divine authority.
The Little Book Opened
The Little Book Opened
Scripture: Revelation 10:2
“…he had in his hand a little book open…”
“Little book” – Greek: biblaridion (Strong’s G974)
Meaning:
• small scroll
• little written message
Notice something important:
This book is already OPEN.
Earlier in Revelation, the sealed scroll could only be opened by the Lamb.
Now this smaller scroll is already revealed.
Behind the veil we see:
As the end approaches, hidden things become revealed.
Daniel 12:4
“…seal the book, even to the time of the end…”
Now in Revelation:
The little book is open.
What was hidden is being unveiled.
One Foot on Sea and One on Earth
One Foot on Sea and One on Earth
Scripture: Revelation 10:2
“…his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth…”
This symbolizes:
Authority
Dominion
Possession
Sea often represents:
Nations
Peoples
Chaos
Earth represents:
Stability
Human systems
By standing on both, the angel demonstrates authority over all creation.
Psalm 24:1
“The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof…”
Behind the veil we see:
Nothing is outside God’s dominion.
The Lion’s Roar and the Seven Thunders
The Lion’s Roar and the Seven Thunders
Scripture: Revelation 10:3–4
“…as when a lion roareth…”
Lion imagery represents:
Power
Kingship
Authority
Amos 3:8
“The lion hath roared, who will not fear?”
Then:
“…seven thunders uttered their voices…”
Thunder throughout Scripture often accompanies:
Divine revelation
Judgment
Power
Psalm 29 repeatedly connects God’s voice with thunder.
Now something unusual happens.
John prepares to write—but is stopped.
“Seal up those things…”
This is important.
Not everything is revealed.
Behind the veil we see:
God reveals enough for faith—but not everything for curiosity.
Time No Longer Delayed
Time No Longer Delayed
Scripture: Revelation 10:5–6
“…there should be time no longer…”
This does not mean time ceases to exist.
It means:
Delay is ending.
The phrase means:
No more postponement.
The culmination is near.
Behind the veil we see:
God’s prophetic clock is moving toward completion.
The Mystery of God Finished
The Mystery of God Finished
Scripture: Revelation 10:7
“…the mystery of God should be finished…”
“Mystery” – Greek: mystērion (Strong’s G3466)
Meaning:
• hidden truth now revealed
This refers to:
God’s full redemptive and judicial plan reaching completion.
Romans 16:25–26
“…the revelation of the mystery…”
Ephesians 1:9–10
“…the mystery of his will…”
Behind the veil we see:
What was hidden through generations is nearing fulfillment.
Eat the Scroll – Internalizing Revelation
Eat the Scroll – Internalizing Revelation
Scripture: Revelation 10:8–10
“…Take it, and eat it up…”
This parallels Ezekiel 3.
The prophet eats the scroll before speaking.
The Word must first become internal before it becomes proclamation.
Now notice:
Sweet in the mouth
Bitter in the belly
Why?
God’s truth is sweet to receive—but bitter to carry.
Truth brings:
Joy
But also burden
Behind the veil we see:
Revelation is not entertainment—it is responsibility.
You Must Prophesy Again
You Must Prophesy Again
Scripture: Revelation 10:11
“…Thou must prophesy again…”
Even after seeing judgment, John still has assignment.
This reminds us:
Until the end comes, the message must still be preached.
Behind the veil we see:
Judgment does not cancel evangelism.
Application
Application
God reveals progressively.
Not everything comes at once.
2. Some mysteries remain sealed.
Faith trusts even when full understanding is withheld.
3. The Word must become internal.
You cannot proclaim what you have not consumed.
4. Truth is both sweet and bitter.
Sweet to receive.
Heavy to carry.
Closing Insight
Closing Insight
Revelation 10 stands between the sixth and seventh trumpets for a reason.
Before the final trumpet sounds, God pauses to reveal:
The mystery is almost complete.
Behind the veil we see:
God never moves into final judgment without first increasing revelation.

Next Session Preview
In the next session, we will study Revelation 11 and the Two Witnesses.
Two prophets will arise with power.
Fire will proceed from their mouths.
The beast will make war against them.
And the world will watch as heaven confronts rebellion openly.
But remember this:
God never leaves Himself without a witness.
