Intro:
Sin disrupts everything
We dont live the lives we were originally designed to live
Sin mars the image of God in us
The story of the Human race, as presented in the Bible, is the story of God fixing broken people living in a broken world

What is Sin?

What Sin Is

Sin is any failure to conform to the moral law of God in act, attitude, or nature
God sets forth his moral law in many places through the Bible
Ten Commandments
Sin is found in our nature, the internal character that is the essence of who we are
Ephesians 2:3 ESV
among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
God is eternally good in his character
Anything contrary to his character is contrary to God himself
God hates sin because it directly contradicts everything He is

Where Sin Came From

We should never blame God for sin or think that he bears the responsibility for sin
God’s work is perfect and all his ways are just
Deuteronomy 32:4 ESV
“The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.
It is impossible for God even to desire to do wrong
Sin did not surprise God when it came into the world, nor did it overpower him
God decided that he would allow moral creatures to willfully and voluntarily choose sin
Sin existed in Satan and his demons before the disobedience of Adam and Eve
When they ate from the tree they directly contradicted God’s command
Neither God or Satan forced them to eat from the tree
As a result Adam’s nature became sinful
His sin also caused us to inherit a sinful nature
Romans 7:18 ESV
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.
David said
Psalm 51:5 ESV
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
We, like Adam after he sinned, are unable on our own to do anything that pleases God
We lack spiritual good in ourselves
We recieve not only Adam’s sinful nature, but his sin-produced guilt
Romans 5:19 ESV
For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
When Adam sinned, God thought of us all as having sinned
This may seem unfair, but it is consistent with the pattern of God
God considers the human race as a whole, represented by Adam as its head
We are all guilty of sin and in need of a way to make ourselves right with God
God designed the world in such a way that our individual failings can be redeemed through the work of another

How Sin Affects Us

Scripture is clear that all stand guilty before God
Psalm 14:3 ESV
They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
1 John 1:8 ESV
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
God didnt bring the penalty of death immediately upon Adam and Eve, so he doesn’t bring it immediately upon us
God offers us freedom from condemnation sin brings
1 Peter 2:24 ESV
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
When we sin as forgiven Christians, our legal standing before God is not affected
While sin does not affect our status or standing with God, it does affect our fellowship with God
1 John 3:9 ESV
No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.
If someone continues in a pattern of disobedience without repentance , he may have never been saved

What is the Atonement?

The work Jesus did in living and dying to earn our salvation is referred to as atonement
Definition: The reconciliation and reparation of the relationship between God and humanity by means of a sacrifice; in Christianity, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ reconciles believers to God, cleanses them, and makes them righteous before him.
Atonement = At One With God
The Cause of the Atonement
Christ came to earn our salvation because of God’s faithful love and justice
God put forward Jesus as a propitiation that as a sacrifice that bears God’s wrath so that God looks favorably toward us
Romans 3:25 ESV
whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
The sins God passed over or didnt punish before Christ came to earth had to be punished somehow if God was to be just
Someone had to take the punishment for those sins

The Necessity of the Atonement

It was not necessary that God save any people at all, in his love he chose to save some
God’s justice made it necessary for Christ to live the life he lived and die the death he died
Jesus knew there was no other way for God to save us than for him to die in our place

The Nature of the Atonement

If Christ had only offered himself as a sacrifice, thereby earning us forgiveness of sins, we would only have access to a partial salvation
Although our guilt would be removed, we would be like Adam and Eve when they were first created: guilt free but capable of sin
In order to enter into fellowship with God, we would need to live a life of perfect obedience
Therefore, Christ had to live a life of perfect obedience to God so that positive merits of that obedience could be counted for us
Romans 5:19 ESV
For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Christ, through his sinless life, became our righteousness
1 Corinthians 1:30 ESV
And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,
Jesus also lived a life of suffering
Isaiah 53:3 ESV
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
He endured from sinners tremendous hostility
Hebrews 12:3 ESV
Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
Through these and other suffering he learned obedience
As Jesus drew closer to the cross, his sufferings increased
HIs physical pain was nothing compared to the spiritual pain
Jesus never sinned and voluntarily took our sins upon himself
1 Peter 2:24 ESV
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Jesus faced this all alone
Even more difficult than the physical pain, mental anguish, and complete abandonment was the pain of bearing the full wrath of God

The Result of the Atonement

What is Justification & Adoption?

Justification: Justification is a Christian’s judicial acceptance by God as not guilty because his sins are not counted against him.
Romans 8:30 ESV
And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

Justification is a Legal Declaration by God

When someone responds to God’s call in repentance and faith, God responds to that by thinking of Christ’s righteousness as belonging to that person
God also declares that person to be righteous in his sight
This act of God is called justification
Justification is God’s response to our faith
Romans 5:1 ESV
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
We are justified by faith, not works
Galatians 2:16 ESV
yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

A Declaration that We Are Righteous Before God

Justification is a legal declaration by God
It is God acting as a judge, declaring that an individual is righteous in his sight
That means you don’t have to pay the penalty for your past, present, or future sins
Romans 8:1 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Justification by Faith Alone

Paul explains that people are justified by God’s grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus
Romans 3:24 ESV
and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Justification comes as a result of God’s grace and it comes as God’s response to our faith
Although justification comes about as God’s act in response to our faith, that does not mean our faith has any merit before God.
It is not our faith that earns our favor with God
This is really wonderful news becuase it means we don’t have to create value or make payments for sin
The doctrine of justification was the central difference between Protestants and Roman Catholics at the time of the Reformation
Roman Catholics responded that Justification was by faith plus use of the means of grace found in the sacraments of the church
Roman Catholics doctrine says that we are not fully justified until our lives are completely cleansed from sin, which will not be until after we die and have been purified in purgatory

Adoption: Membership in a New Family

There is another privilege given to those who look to God for their salvation
God makes us members of his family
This act of God is called adoption
Adoption differs from Justification
It’s dependent on Justification
God considers our sins belonging to Christ and his righteousness belonging to Christ
It is because of Jesus’ atonement and God’s justification that we can be adopted
John 1:12 ESV
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
Ephesians 2:2–3 ESV
in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Because we are children of God we experience many of the benefits of adoption now
WE will not fully enjoy them until Christ returns
Romans 8:17–18 ESV
and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
