Series: Faith That Works — Real Christianity in Everyday Life
Week 6: “Faith That Can Be Seen”
Text: James 2:14–26
Main Truth:
Real saving faith is demonstrated by a changed life and visible obedience.
Introduction
Introduction
Few passages in the book of James have created more discussion than this one.
James asks a penetrating question:
James 2:14 (CSB)
“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him?”
At first glance, some people think James is contradicting Paul.
But he is not.
Paul teaches:
We are saved by faith alone.
James teaches:
Saving faith is never alone.
Paul fights against:
Legalism
James fights against:
Empty profession
James is not saying works save us.
He is saying:
Real faith produces evidence.
Real faith produces evidence.
If faith never changes the life, James says we should question whether that faith is genuine.
I. Faith Without Works Is Empty
I. Faith Without Works Is Empty
(James 2:14–17)
“What good is it… if someone claims to have faith but does not have works?”
A. A Mere Claim Is Not Enough
A. A Mere Claim Is Not Enough
James says:
“…if someone claims…”
It is possible to:
Claim salvation
Talk about faith
Know Christian language
…and still not possess genuine saving faith.
B. Real Faith Produces Compassion
B. Real Faith Produces Compassion
James gives an illustration:
A believer sees someone:
Hungry
Poorly clothed
In need
And simply says:
“Go in peace”
“Stay warm”
“Be well fed”
…but does nothing to help.
C. Faith That Never Acts Is Dead
C. Faith That Never Acts Is Dead
James 2:17 (CSB)
“In the same way faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself.”
Dead faith:
Knows truth intellectually
Makes religious claims
But lacks transformation
Illustration
A tree may look alive in winter.
But eventually fruit reveals whether life is truly there.
Faith works the same way.
Application
Ask yourself:
Has my faith changed how I live?
Has it changed how I treat people?
Is there evidence of Christ in me?
II. Faith Without Evidence Is Exposed
II. Faith Without Evidence Is Exposed
(James 2:18–20)
“But someone will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works.’”
A. Faith Cannot Be Separated from Action
A. Faith Cannot Be Separated from Action
James responds:
“Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.”
Faith is invisible internally…
but visible externally.
Works are not the root of salvation.
They are the fruit of salvation.
B. Even Demons Believe Facts About God
B. Even Demons Believe Facts About God
James 2:19 (CSB)
“You believe that God is one. Good! Even the demons believe—and they shudder.”
This is sobering.
Demons:
Believe God exists
Know Jesus is Lord
Understand truth intellectually
But they are not saved.
Illustration
You can know everything about airplanes…
…but knowledge alone will not get you to your destination unless you actually board the plane.
Faith is more than mental agreement.
It is surrender and trust.
Application
There is a difference between:
Knowing about Jesus
and
Truly belonging to Jesus
III. Faith That Is Genuine Is Expressed Through Obedience
III. Faith That Is Genuine Is Expressed Through Obedience
(James 2:21–25)
James now gives two biblical examples.
A. Abraham — Faith That Obeyed
A. Abraham — Faith That Obeyed
(James 2:21–24)
Abraham believed God in Genesis 15.
But his faith was demonstrated in Genesis 22 when he obeyed God and offered Isaac.
Key Truth:
Obedience revealed the authenticity of his faith.
James 2:22 (CSB)
“You see that faith was active together with his works, and by works, faith was made complete.”
Works mature and reveal genuine faith.
B. Rahab — Faith That Risked
B. Rahab — Faith That Risked
Rahab was:
A Gentile
A prostitute
An unlikely candidate for grace
Yet she believed God…
and acted on that belief by protecting the spies.
Her actions proved her faith was real.
Illustration
If someone says:
“I trust the bridge completely…”
…but refuses to walk across it…
their actions reveal what they truly believe.
Application
Faith is not proven by words alone.
It is proven when obedience becomes visible.
IV. Faith Without Life Is Dead
IV. Faith Without Life Is Dead
(James 2:26)
“For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.”
James closes with a powerful comparison.
A body without breath is lifeless.
Likewise, faith without evidence is lifeless.
A. Dead Faith Has No Spiritual Vitality
A. Dead Faith Has No Spiritual Vitality
It may:
Attend church
Use Christian language
Maintain appearances
But there is no genuine transformation.
B. Living Faith Produces Spiritual Fruit
B. Living Faith Produces Spiritual Fruit
Living faith:
Loves others
Pursues holiness
Obeys Scripture
Repents of sin
Serves faithfully
Illustration
A car without an engine may look beautiful on the outside…
…but it cannot move.
Faith without works may look religious…
but it lacks real spiritual life.
Application
Don’t base your assurance on:
A prayer prayed years ago
Church attendance
Religious activity
Examine whether your life reflects genuine faith in Christ.
What Do I Do?
What Do I Do?
1. Examine Your Faith Honestly
1. Examine Your Faith Honestly
Ask:
Is my faith active?
Is Christ changing me?
Is there spiritual fruit in my life?
2. Let Your Faith Become Visible
2. Let Your Faith Become Visible
Faith should affect:
Your words
Your relationships
Your generosity
Your obedience
3. Serve People Practically
3. Serve People Practically
Real faith cares for real needs.
Look for opportunities to:
Help
Encourage
Give
Serve
4. Walk in Ongoing Obedience
4. Walk in Ongoing Obedience
Obedience does not earn salvation…
But it does reveal salvation.
Conclusion
James gives us a challenging truth:
Faith that never changes the life is not biblical faith.
Real faith:
Trusts Christ
Loves people
Obeys God
Produces fruit
Not perfectly.
But genuinely.
James 2:26 (CSB)
“For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.”
Closing Illustration
Imagine seeing a heart monitor with no movement on the screen.
No pulse.
No activity.
No life.
James says works are not the cause of spiritual life—
they are the evidence that spiritual life exists.
Final Challenge
If your faith were placed on trial today…
Would there be enough evidence to prove it is real?
