Circle the Word Merciful/
We are going to look at Mercy because most people don’t really understand it or how merciful the Father really is.
When you understand the mercy of God your anxiety will decrease and your peace of mind will increase.
Your stress will go down and your stability will go up.
Your frustration in life will be diminished and your satisfaction in life will be increased.
What is Mercy?
We know what it’s not.
It’s not getting even.
It’s not being cruel.
It’s not getting what we deserve.
Mercy - Undeserved Forgiveness & Unearned Kindness
When someone shows you kindness that you didn’t deserve, it’s mercy.
FACT: YOU NEED GOD’S MERCY EVERY SECOND OF YOUR LIFE
The Air you breathe … the water you drink … everything you need for life.
If it wasn’t for the mercy of God, you would never have been born.
God created you - just so he could show his love and mercy to you.
I want to do 2 things today.
1. WHEN DO I NEED GOD’S MERCY?
2. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ACCEPT IT?
IOW what difference does it make?
How will Mercy Change my life?
How does my life get better because of mercy...
Jesus ministry was all about mercy.
He showed mercy to everyone.
There is no person that he did not show mercy to.
Today we will look three stories of Jesus encountering people and relate it back to our lives.
Jesus does not want your life to be filled with being ashamed… being angry… or afraid.
You have no idea of all the ways Jesus wants to show you mercy.
In his mercy, God came to earth in Jesus.
He lived a perfect life.
He taught us what God was really like.
He suffered and died on the cross to pay for our sins.
He rose on Easter to prove we could overcome death.
If you fully understood and felt the full implications of Gods Mercy, you would not live the way you are living.
You would not struggle with feeling
Ashamed of all the things you have done wrong.
Angry for all the things you do not have.
Afraid for all the things that could happen in your future.
Jesus was all about mercy and he showed it to everyone.
Three Situations When We Need God’s Mercy
Let’s look at when we are ashamed...
1.
I NEED GOD’S MERCY WHEN I’VE MESSED UP
We all mess up … you… me - everybody.
None of us are anywhere close to perfect.
None of us bat’s 1000%
I’ve never met anyone who claimed to be perfect, but just incase...
We have all sinned...
You are deceiving yourself if you think you are not messed up … some.
Every9one around knows it… wife… kids… coworkers...
You are deceiving yourself if you think you are perfect or sinless.
Solomon, the wisest man on earth said everyone sins.
No one gets it right all the time.
We all mess up at one time or another.
We All Make Mistakes
Anyone disagree that we all make mistakes?
Anyone stumble because of your words?
You say something and wish you could pull the words back into your mouth.
Stumble with Attitudes?
Stumble with your Actions?
Stumble with the wrong emotions?
We all get tripped up and fall into the same traps over an dover again.
You do… I do.
We all mess up...
How Does God React When You Mess Up?
The short answer is that He shows mercy.
John 8:2-6 tells us a story of a humiliated woman.
talk though the characters in the story
Notice a couple of things: Circle Caught … Trap
1.
There were Two Traps were being laid here:
1.
The embarrassed Woman was caught in a wrong relationship.
2. The Pharisees were trying to catch Jesus in a wrong reaction.
What are some things you get “caught up” in that you know are wrong?
Business Deal?
Relationship?
Secret Habit?
Addiction?
It’s easy to get caught up in materialism… pleasing others… living a double life … competition with others.
2. No one stopped to consider WHY this woman had gotten caught up in a dishonest relationship.
What pain drove her to the behavior she was trapped in?
Here is something we need to understand.
No Behavior is repeated unless it’s rewarded.
Insecure and starving for attention?
Trying to make her pain with sex? trying to feel loved?
Believed the cultural lie that sex shows your value
If you’re not wanted… you are worthless...
They were trying to trap Jesus and did not care about this woman or if they destroyed her life.
This woman was obviously caught in a wrong relationship.
Here’s what happened.
No One Knows What Jesus Wrote in the Dirt
Ever thought about what he was writing in the dirt?
No one really knows.
I think he was writing the sins of the men in the crowd… their secrets…
arrogance… spouse abuse… cheating… tax evasion… porn… unforgiveness… bitterness...
Everyone has sins they don’t want people to know about… stuff you don’t want discovered.
Jesus Protected the Woman’s Dignity in Public
We need to always protect people’s dignity in public.
You don’t have to agree with someone, but we should always treat them with dignity.
Jesus accepted everyone… he didn’t approve of what they did but he accepted them.
So he finally stands up and says, OK… any of you who is without any sin, throw the first stone.
