Parasha Bamidbar 5786

Synopsis: Parasha Bamidbar opens in the wilderness of Sinai, where ADONAI commands Moses to take a census of the tribes of Israel a little over a year after the Exodus from Egypt. Every male twenty years old and upward who is able to go to war is counted tribe by tribe, with each tribal leader named and appointed over his people. The census establishes both the military strength and organizational structure of Israel as they prepare to journey toward the Promised Land. The tribe of Levi is intentionally excluded from the general census because they are set apart for the service of the Tabernacle.
The Levites are assigned responsibility over the Mishkan, its furnishings, and its transportation whenever the camp moves. The arrangement of Israel’s camp is then detailed, with each tribe positioned strategically around the Tabernacle according to banner and family. The central placement of the Mishkan emphasizes the Presence of God dwelling among His people.
Chapter 3 records the genealogy and duties of the Levite clans—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari—while Chapter 4 specifically outlines the sacred responsibilities of the Kohathites in transporting the holiest vessels of the sanctuary, including the Ark, menorah, and altars, after Aaron and his sons carefully cover them for travel.

Numbers 2:1–3 TLV
1 Adonai said to Moses and Aaron saying, “ 2 Let each man encamp under his own standard among the banners of their ancestral house at an appropriate distance around the Tent of Meeting. 3 Those camping on the east—toward the sunrise—will be of the standard of Judah, according to their divisions. Nachshon son of Amminadab, is the prince of the sons of Judah.
Numbers 2:10 TLV
10 The standard of the camp of Reuben shall be on the south side, by their divisions. The prince of the sons of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur.
Numbers 2:17 TLV
17 Then the Tent of Meeting will move out with the camp of the Levites, which is in the middle of the camps—just as they were in camp, each person in his own place under his own appropriate standard.
Numbers 2:18 TLV
18 On the west will be the standard of the camp of Ephraim, by their divisions. The prince of the sons of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud.
Numbers 2:25 TLV
25 The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north, according to their divisions. The prince of the sons of Dan is Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai.
Numbers 2:33–34 TLV
33 However, the Levites were not counted among Bnei-Yisrael, just as Adonai commanded Moses. 34 So Bnei-Yisrael acted in accordance with all that Adonai had commanded Moses. Thus they camped by their standards and set out, each man according to their families and their ancestral houses.
To reiterate:
East side: Judah, Issachar, & Zebulun
South side: Rueben, Simeon, & Gad
Mishkan rests and journies in the center of Israel.
West Side: Ephraim, Manasseh, & Benjamin
North Side: Dan, Asher, & Naftali

Now the Levites
Numbers 3:23 TLV
23 The Gershonites were to camp behind the Tabernacle on the west.
Numbers 3:29 TLV
29 The Kohathite families were to camp along the side of the Tabernacle on the south.
Numbers 3:35 TLV
35 The prince of the household of the father of the Merarites was Zuriel son of Abihail. They were to camp on the north side of the Tabernacle.
Numbers 3:38 TLV
38 Those camping in front of the Tent of Meeting, on the east, toward the sunrise, were Moses, Aaron, and his sons. They were to care for the Sanctuary on behalf of Bnei-Yisrael. But anyone unauthorized who approached had to be executed.
This divinely orchestrated layout of the camps of Israel is far more than simple logistics… This is a spiritual lesson.
The center of Israel’s life was not politics, military strength, or personal preference—it was the Presence of God.
Every tribe faced inward toward the Mishkan.
What sits at the center of our homes?
Our synagogue?
Our schedules?
Our identity?
The Midrash notes, in Bamidbar Rabbah 2, that the tribes encamped around the Mishkan the same way angels surround the throne of God. Israel’s camp was intentionally patterned after heaven itself.
Israel was not merely traveling through the wilderness as a loose collection of tribes. They were organized as the earthly kingdom of God with His Presence enthroned in the center.
Ramban repeatedly argues that the Mishkan functioned as a continuation of Sinai. The same divine glory revealed publicly at Sinai now dwelled continually among the people through the Mishkan.
That means the center of Israel’s camp was not a religious symbol. It was ongoing covenant encounter.
If Sinai was the moment of encounter, the Mishkan was the sustaining of encounter.
The Presence was not meant to be visited occasionally. It was meant to remain central daily.

Ephesians 2:17–22 TLV
17 And He came and proclaimed shalom to you who were far away and shalom to those who were near— 18 for through Him we both have access to the Father by the same Ruach. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household. 20 You have been built on the foundation made up of the emissaries and prophets, with Messiah Yeshua Himself being the cornerstone. 21 In Him the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple for the Lord. 22 In Him, you also are being built together into God’s dwelling place in the Ruach.

1 Corinthians 3:12–17 TLV
12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear. For the Day will show it, because it is to be revealed by fire; and the fire itself will test each one’s work—what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss—he himself will be saved, but as through fire. 16 Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that the Ruach Elohim dwells among you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
