Series— Living a life full of Wisdom

This morning we are going to start a new series in the book of Proverbs. There is some much for us to learn from in this book.
A proverb — is a short, traditional saying that expresses truth, and practical life advice, or conventional wisdom.
Something like this - a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. — Certainty is more valuable than risk
Proverbs teach us truths in a simple but effective story.
I always think of like my grandpa telling What he called his proverbs - hoping we would learn from his stories.
Proverbs focus in on us gaining wisdom. As we study we will see lots of statements and declarations we can learn from that will help us on our journey.
The book of proverbs is a collection of practical life wisdom. Proverbs is part of a larger group of Wisdom literature - Psalms, Job, Ecclesiastes, and song of Solomon, The book of Proverbs is unique from those. Which we will dive into.
Proverbs is unique in its structure and how its mostly a collection of individual statements with out much context or origination of topic.
Its theology being focused on practical life wisdom more than the idea of Gods saving work.
Proverbs are not regarded as laws or even universal promises. Proverbs are wonderful for what they are A proverb. They are stories to live by not a 1+1 Equals 2 thing. its not a eat this you get get skinny thing or a if you so this this will always happen to you.
Proverbs are more of a guide than than a law to live by. Proverbs by design lay out pointed observations, meant to be memorized and pondered not always intended to be applied across the board to every situation without qualification.
A proverb is not a magical formula bringing wisdom and blessings by incantation, They are here for us to learn from.
Proverbs 1:1–6 ESV
The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.
These 1st 6 verse lay out how we understand a proverb and how they are used.
Wisdom and instruction help is understand how to deal wisely
How to act righteous how to understand Justice and equity - all these thing our world misunderstands . Wisdom shows us how to treat people fairly
Wisdom gives prudence or use of reason - it helps us figure our when we are being swindled. The old adage street smart could apply here.
The wise hear and increase in learning and seeks guidance when they need it. Im not ashamed to ask for help or seek counsel from pastor mentors. Doing such is considered wise. Because you end up learning from others mistakes and we grow. That's what proverbs help us do Grow.
Cars i don't know enough i called Brian this week. Ill admit i was doing it wrong i needed counsel. ———-
These Proverbs help make topics easier to understand. We are called to continue to be learners. If we come to our christian walk thinking I got it all figured out there's a word for that PRIDE. and we will learn about that in this book to.
If you come to church with you mind all made up on every belief, come on up and teach. Wisdom is knowing we dont know every thing and being humble enough to learn. I have issues back when i was Independent baptist. \
If you ask my wife I'm still a know it all— But heres the deal we dont know everything we need to be willing to continue to learn. Thats some of the worlds problem today they dont want to learn, they are set in there ways,
ANd dont get me started on that in our churches, set in ways has done more harm to the gospel than many things.
Proverbs 1:7–20 CSB
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline. Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and don’t reject your mother’s teaching, for they will be a garland of favor on your head and pendants around your neck. My son, if sinners entice you, don’t be persuaded. If they say—“Come with us! Let’s set an ambush and kill someone. Let’s attack some innocent person just for fun! Let’s swallow them alive, like Sheol, whole, like those who go down to the Pit. We’ll find all kinds of valuable property and fill our houses with plunder. Throw in your lot with us, and we’ll all share the loot”— my son, don’t travel that road with them or set foot on their path, because their feet run toward evil and they hurry to shed blood. It is useless to spread a net where any bird can see it, but they set an ambush to kill themselves; they attack their own lives. Such are the paths of all who make profit dishonestly; it takes the lives of those who receive it. Wisdom calls out in the street; she makes her voice heard in the public squares.
Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom — pause here
This fear is a terrified meaning of fear its a deep humbling reverence, respect and awe for his power and authority.
Do we reverence the Lord- do we show him respect in our daily lives. He is all powerful he can end this world with just a snap. Having wisdom is understanding this.
sadly the world doesn't have the fear of the Lord they dont care about him.
One day they will and it will be to late.
We need to start with acknowledging God and his ways first to gain wisdom. Without this foundation knowledge remains just superficial. No depth it like a mile wide and a inch deep. There are alot of folks like this,
Fool despises wisdom- The fool here is not low IQ but someone who is morally defiant, proud and refuses to accept correction or instruction. This is the contrast to a wise person who wants to continue to learn and grow.
Psalm 14:1 ESV
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good.
There are so many categorized as educated fools in this world.
8-9 Emphasizes the Lifelong value of heeding parental guidance. It teaches that a child who listens to their parents godly instruction and moral correction is wise.
10 - Dont let sinners entice you, this world wants to drag us down and away from God. These sinners plan their sin they know what they are doing. Proverbs 1:15-20
Proverbs 1:15–20 ESV
my son, do not walk in the way with them; hold back your foot from their paths, for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. For in vain is a net spread in the sight of any bird, but these men lie in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives. Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain; it takes away the life of its possessors. Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice;
Sinners feet run ti evil. boy we see that in the world.
Greedy of gain-
1 Timothy 6:10 ESV
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
The love of Money has caused believers to wander away.
I have to have more i have to have more corrupts one mind. Being content in the Lord and is provision
verse 20 this verse means that God’s wisdom is not a secret hidden in an exclusive hard to reach place. Instead it is public easily accessible and for all.
As we study the book of proverbs let us grow closer to God and in wisdom. Im excited to deep deeper in this book.
Prayer asking for Wisdom.
