Relationships wk 2 BETTER TOGETHER Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (nasb) 'Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. ' The Ache of Loneliness ~We live in the most connected age in human history. ~We carry phones with access to billions of people. ~We have social media, group chats, and video calls at our fingertips. And yet - the research tells us something startling: we are lonelier than ever. The U.S. Surgeon General has called loneliness an epidemic. Studies show that a lack of meaningful community is as harmful to physical health as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. Something has gone wrong. And it isn't new. Long before the age of smartphones, God Himself looked at Adam - the only human alive in a perfect garden - and said four striking words: Genesis 2:18 "It is not good for man to be alone." This was not a design flaw. It was a design feature. God wired us for relationship. For friendship. For community. Today we're going to explore what Scripture says about the gift of genuine friendship - and how to cultivate it in a world that has made it harder than ever. ✦ ✦ ✦ I. Friendship Is a Gift John 15:12-15(nasb) ' "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. ' ~Let that sink in. Jesus - the Son of God, Lord of the universe - called His disciples friends. ~Not subjects. Not employees. Friends. ~This tells us something profound: friendship is not a human invention. It is a divine one. When you enjoy the warmth of a loyal friend, you are experiencing a reflection of God's own heart. ~The model Jesus sets for us is extraordinary. ~He initiated. He gave of Himself. He loved first, loved deeply, and loved without conditions. ~The friendships God calls us to are not shallow acquaintances built on convenience - they are covenantal bonds built on selfless love. ~Think of David and Jonathan. Their friendship is one of the most beautiful in all of Scripture. Jonathan, the king's son, gave up his own claim to the throne to protect and honor his friend. ~He said to David: 'Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord.' (1 Samuel 20:42). ~Real friendship carries the name of the Lord. It is sacred territory. I am sure many can remember as kids, plying outside till the sun went down, riding bikes, building forts, setting fields on fire....typical kid stuff ~ today it is video games, social media etc... So my question to you... do you have a few close friends that you spend time with. You can talk to etc ... II. Community Is Where We Are Shaped Proverbs 27:17 (nasb) 'Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another. ' ~Here is a truth we often forget: we become who we are largely through the people we do life with. ~Iron does not sharpen itself. You cannot grow in isolation. ~Community is not optional for the Christian life - it is the environment God designed for our spiritual formation. The early church understood this instinctively. ~Acts 2:42-47(nasb) 'They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.' The word for 'fellowship' in that passage is the Greek word koinonia - ~it means a deep sharing, a partnership, a having-in-common. ~This is not the fellowship of a handshake at the door on Sunday morning. This is the fellowship of knowing and being known. ~ Of sitting with someone in their pain. Of celebrating someone's breakthrough as if it were your own. III. We Were Built to Bear One Another's Burdens Galatians 6:2(nasb). "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." ~Notice the apostle Paul doesn't say 'try not to be a burden.' He doesn't say 'be strong enough to carry your own weight.' ~He says: bear one another's burdens. This is mutual. It flows both ways. ~To be in real community means being willing to carry for others - and being humble enough to let others carry for you. ~There is a beautiful vulnerability required in true friendship. It means being honest when you are struggling. It means not performing 'fine' when you are falling apart. It means trusting someone enough to let them see the hard parts of your story. ~This is hard. Many of us have been hurt. We've opened up before and been let down. We've trusted someone and been burned. And so we've built walls. ~We show up to church, we smile, we say 'I'm good,' and we leave as lonely as we came. ~But hear this: God does not call us to a life of protected isolation. He calls us to risk - the risk of love. ✦ ✦ ✦ Practical Application: Three Steps Toward Deeper Community So what does this look like on a Tuesday afternoon? Here are three practical steps you can take this week: 1. Show Up Consistently - You cannot build deep friendships without being present. Join a small group, a Bible study, a serving team - and commit. Depth is built over time and shared experience. Show up even when you don't feel like it. 2. Ask Better Questions - Move beyond 'How are you?' Try: 'What has God been teaching you lately?' or 'What are you carrying right now that I can pray about?' Great friendships are built on great conversations. 3. Be the Friend You're Looking For - Stop waiting for someone to reach out to you. Be the initiator. Send the text. Make the invite. Bring the meal. You will rarely regret choosing love. ✦ ✦ ✦ Romans 12:10 (nasb). 'Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; ' Proverbs 18:249NASB) 'A man of too many friends comes to ruin, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.'
