Text: Eph. 4:11-16 ESV
Text: Eph. 4:11-16 ESV
English Standard Version (Chapter 4)
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to EQUIP the saints for the WORK of ministry, for BUILDING UP THE BODY OF CHRIST, 13 until we all attain to the UNITY of the faith…. and of the KNOWLEDGE of the Son of God… to MATURE manhood, to the measure of the stature of the FULLNESS OF CHRIST, WHY? 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
Here is the results of… 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when EACH PART IS WORKING PROPERLY, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Introduction
Imagine a family
Picture One: UnHealthy Family
One or two people carry everything, all the meals, laundry, decisions and work … all the serving
While, everyone else just comes and enjoys your hard work
Here’s Results:
Adults who don’t know how to care for anyone but themselves - searching for real meaning
Church attendees receiving and never giving back. Those carrying the load…. are exhausted and burned out.
Its time for a shift… from meaningless to meaningful…
If we don’t get this today… here’s…
Whats at stake?
Let's look at it on the screen together.
Our families and churches will suffer because we're too busy building ourselves up instead of building each other up..
When we’re over focused on ourselves -we become consumer minded - rather than service minded and caring about others.
We’re talking about….
Sermon Title | Family that Works Together
Paul addresses two big ideas in this passage… that will help us be the Church family God imagined us to be. These are his instructions to us.
The first thing I see he is saying… IN YOUR NOTES is…
Recognize your ROLE. v.7,11-13
Recognize your ROLE. v.7,11-13
***Clay you can have the point and upcoming verse on the same slide… it will come fast
We see this in 11, 12… lets look at it on it on the screen together…
English Standard Version Chapter 4
11 And he gave the
There are two types of roles addressed in these verses. Do you see them…? IN YOUR NOTES…
There are EQUIPPERS. v. 11a
There are EQUIPPERS. v. 11a
The apostles, prophets, evangelists, and so on… These roles are, office’s of leadership… these leaders have job…
For us our Pastors, Deacons, Ministry Directors
Can you see their job description? Is to equip.
The Greek word for equip
is the word….
= katartizō (Kat-ar - tizo)
It means.
Meaning: to put in order and make complete.
This word was also used in the first century to describe mending torn fishing nets… by putting it into proper condition or order so it can be ready for service.
We see this in Matt. 4:21 this same word… lets look at it on the screen
As God uses the illustration of fishing… often… and here we see it
***Clay when you add this try to keep the Greek word meaning on here from the previous slide.
English Standard Version Chapter 4
these fishermen… doing what?
English Standard Version Chapter 4
,
These guys we’re busy - MENDING.. the same word as EQUIPPING…
Repairing their next putting them back in proper condition so it could function properly.
Here’s the point: God is going to use the Equippers to mend… the workers … as the workers experience healing and discipleship they begin to function properly… in the family of God.
Question: Who’s Job is it… to ready the workers for Gods work in the World?
Answer: EQUIPERS
***If your An equipper, this should cause us to take our job much more seriously (Lets this soak for a moment)
Many times we get this backwards… here is what it looks like…
Leaders getting bogged down - scrambling to doing the work… rather than equipping and leading the work.
Yes, this takes more time, more intention.. to equip and send… but this is our CALLING as Equippers.
Lets not make excuses for this… lets make solutions.
Let me say it like this…
Leadership exists to equip, not perform. (Repeate)
The challenge is when the body/people don’t receive ministry from one another… and only from the Pastors and Ministry leaders.
Wow.. talk about diminishing the gifts in your brothers and sisters!
Here is the questions I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…
One for leaders
Question: How am I using my time to equip people work of the ministry?
Question: How am I using my time to equip people work of the ministry?
This not a time to deflect, make excuses, but a time to invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you, so you can answer the scriptures honestly…
Some of you are doing this through leading a ministry, a small group or a cultivation class, etc…
Paul says RECOGNIZE YOUR ROLE…
There are not just equippers…
Here Is what else I notice IN YOUR NOTES…
There are WORKERS. v. 11b-13
There are WORKERS. v. 11b-13
lets look at v 12…on the screen.
English Standard Version Chapter 4
He gave us these leaders…
The Workers - are here to help handle the every day functions of - Sunday/Wed./C-groups/outreaches… and life within the body
Ready for… hospital visits, ready to pray, ready to give wisdom, ready to show them how to use their testimony… and ready to teach others to do what they do..
STORY: Brag on REESE Halmark
Hey Pastor Shawn - I exchanged numbers with “”Johnnie” one of our new guys… to see if they want to connect and do bible study together.
This happens every couple weeks.
Reese is going to fill up… who is going to step up to invite the next group of people who walk through our doors looking for authentic biblical community and discipleship into bible study with you.
Reese is just one example of several who are doing things like this.
What is The RESULT of EVERYONE WORING?
the last part of this verse says… When everyone works…
English Standard Version Chapter 4
for
the Church is BUILT up
How will we know BUILDING up is happening (METRICS)
v. 13 tells us we do this UNTILL…
WE WILL SEE
****Shawn just read off the key words here
English Standard Version Chapter 4
13
WE WILL SEE
The church UNIFIED in FAITH
We will see PEOPLE
Knowledgable - about Christ
We will see PEOPLE
Maturing….
We will see PEOPLE
FULL of of Christ
Someone say,
I AM RESPONSIBLE…. for the for the MATURITY… of my church.
Look at the person next to you… YOU HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO… :)
If your calling the Pastors and ministry leaders to ask them to do the WORK that you are capable of doing…. it’s time to step out in your God given responsibility
If you feel un equipped or lack wisdom seek help and then minister… if it’s out of your gifting… then connect them to someone that has the right gifting.
Here is the questions I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…
Question: How am I using my gifts to mature the body? How might I need step it up?
Question: How am I using my gifts to mature the body? How might I need step it up?
Everybody should be doing something… I don’t want to be responsible before God for making it easy for you to be a consumer-minded christian at TGP. Neither did Paul
We’re talking about….

Paul addresses two big ideas in this passage… to help us be a family he imagined and called us to be.. .
The first is this
Recognizing your ROLE.
Are you an equipper or a worker
The next thing he says… IN YOUR NOTES is… is this

Recognize your RESPONSIBILITY(14-16)
Yeah… We have a responsibility.
We see this in verses 14 through 16.
This responsibility is about the stewardship of our gifting.

LETS GET REAL PRACTICAL:
In recognizing our responsibility…
The first thing you should do is… IN YOUR NOTES
DISCOVER your gifts. (v.14, Ecc. 9:10)
DISCOVER your gifts. (v.14, Ecc. 9:10)
Scripture describes in verse 14. That we eventually grow up from being children and we mature… Part of growing up is moving from being a only a receiver both a receive and giver.
This is where we move from being meaningless to meaningful to…. others
Pastoral moment: Every one of you have a God-given gift/ability to ministry to the body in a meaningful way…
Do you know what your gift is?
If not… Think about this…
If you were part of a team, which ONE of these roles would you naturally be drawn towards?
Would it be a….
1. LEADER — You see what needs to happen and lead
Would it be a….
2. SUPPORTER — You love to help.
Would it be a….
3. ADMINISTRATOR —You love to organize and make things smooth
Maybe you’re a…
4. PROMOTER — You love to invite and welcome
Lastly… you’re a…
5. CHEERLEADER — You love encourage, your always vibeM - people love when your in the room.
Whatever your gifted to do…
your brothers and sisters need you.
When you find that…
Lets look at Ecc. 9:10a… on the screen together… it says
Ecclesiastes 9:10a (ESV)
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…
What do you repeatedly find yourself doing… this is a clue to your gifting
Do that… and (Work hard at it)

We’ll help you assess your gift and find your fit.
In recognizing our responsibility…
The next thing you should do is …IN YOUR NOTES…
DIRECT your heart (v.15, Col 3:23-24)
DIRECT your heart (v.15, Col 3:23-24)
yea…. We need to make sure our heart is aimed in the right direction.
We see this in Ephesians 4:15… as Paul is speaking here about motive…
He's saying, "As you do the work of ministry, make sure our gift is being used from a place of love… for the maturity and betterment of others.
It’s important to understand this…
PAUSE -CLIP BEGINING
Our God given gifts are NOT for self-gratification, or personal fulfillment. That comes from Christ… Our gifts are for serving others.
So I ask you… Is your heart aimed at…
Your EGO?
You can know this becuase on the inside your saying, “LOOK AT ME”
Or, is your heart aimed at…
Christ?
You can know this too… becuase your heart is saying, “ LOOK at HIM?
PAUSE -CLIP ENDING
Our motive matters.
Scripture says it like this in Col. 3:23 Lets look at it on the screen together
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
Paul's doesn't seem to be interested in our personal fulfillment when it comes to working for the Lord…
He's interested in the body's maturity and so should we.
I'm not saying
Recognition and saying thank you do not matter. They have their place.
But I am saying… it shouldn't be our motive for why we serve.
lastly.. IN YOUR NOTES You have a responsibility to…
DEVELOP your gifts (v.16)
DEVELOP your gifts (v.16)
We See this in verse 16 of our text. Let's look at it on the screen together.
16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when EACH PART IS(What?) WORKING PROPERLY,
How about you?
Are you WORKING properly…?
If not…
Are you investing in the growth and maturity of your own gifts.
The result of the Church working properly:
makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
The body growth is a result of EACH EQUIPPER AND WORKER doing their part.
It’s up to the BODY.
We all have our part to play…
The Equippers… EQUIP
Pastors, Deacons, Ministry Leaders, C-Group Leaders… are you too busy doing ministry that your failing to equip the workers… (Master the TGP Way - lead people in Next Steps… invite people along side you to learn)
You can do this easily in Huddles, team meetings pre or post service when everyone is already here, use what we have given you TGP way, Next Steps, call people up.
We all have our part to play…if your not an equipper… your a WOKER
The Workers… WORK
Church when we expect all the work of the ministry is done by the leadership we have an unbiblical expectation.
We should all…
Be caring our load
We should all…
all able to receive this ministry from both equippers & workers within the body.
Truth is… we can all do better…. GOD has MORE for you he has more for US!
How many of you want that? How many of you believe that…
Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…
This not a time to deflect, make excuses, but a time to invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you, so you can answer the scriptures honestly…
Question: How would you steward your gift differently, knowing it’s for His purposes, rather than your own?

Give yourself 2-3 simple action items.

Salvation Altar Call
Salvation Altar Call
I believe Jesus is here today, and He wants to save you. Salvation simply means to deliver or to free. It’s not just about delivering you…
It’s about believing
Believing in Jesus means trusting what He say’s—about sin, and eternal punishment, thats the bad news.
The good news is this… that His death on the cross paid the penalty for our sins, making us right with God.
Ephesians 2:8 reminds us: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Salvation requires two things:
1. God’s Grace—His undeserved gift of forgiveness and life because of His love for you.
2. Faith—placing your trust in Him for salvation.
If you’ve never asked Jesus to save you, today is your day. If you’d like ask him… , raise your hand.
I want to invite you to Repeat a prayer after me
· There is nothing magical in this prayer.. it simply is a way of declaring to Jesus what has taken place in your heart.
Here is how I would like to end the service for everyone else….
Call to Action Altar Call
***Uproot the idols… WORSHIP is restored….
-anything that gets in the way of us serving God \ sin, pride, etc… strongholds, unforgiveness, bitterness
-They are a hinderance… to our service for the lord… our work unto the Lord is our act of WORSHIP
-John V pray over anyone allowing
We’re going to end the service with A question as we do nearly every week.
ALL ACROSS THE ROOM – HAS THE HOLY SPIRIT spoken to you in anyway today?
If you need ministry, prayer, encouragement from the body… I want to invite you to come forward… we want to pray for you today…
Coach our people… now as you are all workers… come and pray… minister to the family of God who needs your support.

Tongues & Interpretation
1. To STRENGTHEN the Church (1 Cor14:5)
For prophecy is greater than SPEAKING in TONGUES, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be STRENGTHENED.
Believers, God has operated through this gift today to strengthen you today. Let your faith be strengthened and know that God is in control and using supernatural measures to speak to us.
2. Is a SIGN for unbelievers. (1Cor. 14: 21a, 22)
1 Corinthians 14:21–22 (ESV)
In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.
22 - So you see that speaking in tongues is a SIGN, not for believers, but for UNBELIEVERS.
The Bible explains to us God has chosen to use this gift to be a sign for you. A sign for what? It is a sign of his realness for those of you who have been doubting or questioning the existence of God. He wants you to know he is REAL and he wants to bring you spiritual life and health. If you're in here today and you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior... he wants you to know he has gone to great lengths to show you his love today. (Great opportunity for a salvation altar call if it fits).
