“From Fear to Faith”
Background
Background
The Gospel of Gospel of John is traditionally attributed to John the Apostle, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples and part of Jesus’ inner circle. John wrote this Gospel approximately AD 85–95, while the events described occurred around AD 30–33 immediately following the resurrection of Jesus.
John’s purpose was not merely historical documentation, but spiritual transformation. He wrote to both Jews and Gentiles so they would recognize Jesus as the promised Messiah and Son of God.
John emphasizes:
The deity of Christ
Belief and faith
The signs and miracles of Jesus
Eternal life through Him
The transforming power of the resurrection
The events in John 20 occur after Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. The disciples are fearful, confused, grieving, and hiding behind locked doors. Yet Jesus enters the room bringing peace, proof, purpose, power, and proclamation.

Key Truth
God often settles the heart before He sends the servant.
The disciples were:
Afraid
Hiding
Uncertain
Emotionally shaken
Yet Jesus did not rebuke them first. He restored them first.
Application

Many believers struggle to walk in purpose because they have not received Christ’s peace.
Peace:
Removes fear
Stabilizes the mind
Restores confidence
Prepares us for assignment
Jesus still speaks peace into:

His hands
His pierced side
The scars became evidence.
Key Truth
Key Truth
What once looked like defeat became confirmation of victory.
The disciples rejoiced because:
The resurrection was real
Death was defeated
Jesus was alive
Application
Application
Sometimes God allows visible reminders of what He brought us through so others can see His power.
Your testimony becomes proof that:
God heals
God restores
God delivers
God keeps His promises
Joy often follows revelation.
3. Authority (Empowerment) — Through the Holy Spirit
3. Authority (Empowerment) — Through the Holy Spirit
Jesus said:
“As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
Then He breathed on them.
This parallels:
God breathing life into Adam (Genesis 2:7)
Spiritual rebirth
New creation life
Key Truth
Key Truth
Jesus never sends believers without empowering them.
The disciples needed more than enthusiasm:
They needed spiritual power
Boldness
Discernment
Divine authority
Application
Application
Ministry without the Spirit becomes human effort.
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to:
Witness
Endure persecution
Walk in holiness
Discern truth
Love people well
4. The Holy Spirit
4. The Holy Spirit
Jesus breathed and said:
“Receive the Holy Spirit.”
This moment was both symbolic and preparatory for the fullness that would come at Pentecost in Acts 2.
Key Truth

The resurrection was not only about Jesus living again—it was about believers receiving new spiritual life.
The Holy Spirit:
Comforts
Convicts
Guides
Teaches

Application
Application
Without the Holy Spirit:

Led by emotions instead of truth
With the Holy Spirit:
We gain discernment
Spiritual strength
Confidence in prayer
Power to overcome sin
5. Authority to Proclaim Forgiveness
5. Authority to Proclaim Forgiveness
Jesus declared that the disciples had authority to proclaim the message of forgiveness through Him.
Key Truth
Key Truth
The church does not create forgiveness; it announces the forgiveness already provided through Christ.
Those who:
Repent
Confess Jesus as Lord
Believe in Him
…receive forgiveness of sins.
Those who reject Christ remain separated from God.
Important Clarification
Important Clarification
Only God forgives sins, but believers are commissioned to proclaim the Gospel message that leads to forgiveness.
Application
Application
Believers are called to:
Share the Gospel boldly
Call people to repentance
Extend grace and truth
Point people to Jesus, not themselves

John 20:24–25
“Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.’”
