Grow Up

Synopsis:

Healthy Things Grow and if we are in a healthy relationship with God we should be growing. Paul deals with this topic and tells of a time when we must stop being infants and GROW UP.

Message:

Hebrews 5:11–14 “About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

Vs. 11 dull, as opposed to sharp, thing of the old, traditional # 2 pencil… There is a distinct difference from when the pencil has just been sharpened and when it has become dull. Could your faith use a sharpening.

Vs. 12 Ages does not necessarily mean maturity. Sometimes we here the phrase, “act your age” that insinuates that someone’s level of maturity is not congruent with their actual number of their age. As Christians we can age in years of the faith but not in maturity and that is what this passage is warning against.

“you ought to be teachers…” this is referring to being in a place where you should be teaching. No one learns more than the teacher.

Vs. 13 the milk represents the immaturity that we need to avoid

Vs. 14 on of the byproducts of maturity is discernment.

2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”

How NOT to Grow

No Water (John 7:38-39)

No Sun (John 15:7)

No Nutrients (Romans 10:17)

Neglect (I Timothy 4:7)

Overgrown Weeds (Matthew 5:30)
