This sermon is the first message in the Better Together series, preached at Calvary Baptist Church in Bedford, Virginia. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 12:12–20, it addresses the generational divide within the local church by anchoring the congregation in the sovereign, intentional act of God in placing every member in the body of Christ. The sermon exposes the root sin behind generational tension — self-rejection rooted in comparison — and calls every member, regardless of age, to lay down the demand for the church they prefer and function faithfully where God set them. The Big Idea is: You belong in the body of Christ because God put you there — and so does everyone else. The Biblical illustration draws from Exodus 31:1–6 and the placement of the craftsmen for the building of the Tabernacle. The altar call offers three invitations: salvation, repentance from the foot's or ear's complaint, and recommitment to faithful function in the body.

1 Corinthians 12:12–20 | Series: Better Together, Message 1
BIG IDEA: You belong in the body of Christ because God put you there — and so does everyone else.

INTRODUCTION

Name the tension honestly — every generation feels it
I love this church - By that I mean, I love each person God has brought together to be this church. Each and every person from the the older generation to the youngest members. Unfortunately, there are times when every family had its conflicts. I know having raised five boys. Each are different and sometimes those differences can cause conflict. It is the same with a church family.
Older members: love what was / Younger members: hope for what could be
The divide is not cultural at root — it is spiritual
The answer is not compromise or a committee — it is the Word of God
Read 1 Corinthians 12:12–20
1 Corinthians 12:12–20 KJV 1900
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? 18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. 19 And if they were all one member, where were the body? 20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.

BIG IDEA STATED

You belong in the body of Christ because God put you there — and so does everyone else.
You belong — not by earning, not by winning, not by tenure
God put you there — sovereign, deliberate, purposeful placement
And so does everyone else — the same God placed the member nothing like you

BIG IDEA AUTHENTICATED

(What the Text Says)

I. The Spirit Made Us One (vv. 12–13)

1 Corinthians 12:12–13 KJV 1900
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
The body is one, made of many — unity before diversity
All baptized by one Spirit into one body — aorist passive: done to us, not by us
Jew/Gentile, bond/free (old/young) — the Spirit crossed every dividing line even generational divides
Application bridge: If the Spirit crossed those chasms, He can hold the generations of this church together - in fact, He desires that generations of people be together in a local body. We are not just here to be here, we are here to because He place us here.

II. The Lie We Tell Ourselves (vv. 14–17)

1 Corinthians 12:14–17 KJV 1900
14 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
The foot argues with itself, not the hand — this is a crisis of identity, not conflict
"Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body" — self-rejection rooted in comparison
The older member: I no longer fit here — the foot's complaint
The younger member: There is no room for me here — the ear's complaint
The Holy Spirit’s answer: Does the complaint change the organic fact of belonging? No.
1 Corinthians 12:17 “If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?” : A body of only one kind is an incomplete body — diversity is the design, not the disease; it is a good and holy thing that we are diverse in many ways including that we are generationally different

III. God Placed Every Member (v. 18)

1 Corinthians 12:18 KJV 1900
18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
God — not tradition, not trend, not majority vote
ἔθετο SET — aorist middle: God's completed, personal, intentional act
As it pleased him — His will, His design, no appeal
The elderly saint: God put you here / The young member: God put you here
1 Corinthians 12:19–20 “And if they were all one member, where were the body? 20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.” : Reduce to sameness and you lose the body entirely; we lose what God intended us to be

BIG IDEA VALIDATED

(Why This Is True Beyond This Passage)
Romans 12:4–5 — same body, same design
Romans 12:4–5 KJV 1900
4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
Ephesians 4 — the body grows as every part works; the enemy is immaturity, not diversity
Acts 2:17 / Joel 2 — old men and young men, daughters and sons, from the moment Christ said, “Upon this rock, I will build MY church...”
The multi-generational church is not a demographic accident — it is prophetic fulfillment

BIG IDEA EXPLAINED

(What This Means for Our Church)
The tension is not about preferences — it is about forgetting that every other member was placed here by God
The older member's complaint = the foot's complaint
The younger member's complaint = the ear's complaint
The Holy Spirit’s answer to both: God placed you. God placed them. Stop vying and start functioning.
There is no version of this church where one generation wins and the church is healthy
There is only one healthy version: every member, received as God's placement, doing their work

BIBLICAL ILLUSTRATION

(Exodus 31:1–6 — The Building of the Tabernacle)
Exodus 31:1–6 KJV 1900
1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: 3 And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, 4 To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, 5 And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship. 6 And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan: and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee;
God named Bezaleel, named Aholiab, filled all the wise-hearted workers
Every craftsman placed and gifted by God for their specific task
No single craftsman could build it alone — God designed it that way
The result: not a monument to any craftsman's vision — a dwelling place for God's glory
(Ephesians 2:22 “In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”)The church is God's dwelling place today
It will not be built by one generation's design — it will be built when every placed member does their work, together

APPLICATION

The wrong question: Is this church what I want? | The right question: Am I faithfully functioning where God placed me?
To the older members:
Your history here is a resource, not a liability
Do not withdraw your faith, your wisdom, your roots
The younger members cannot get what you carry anywhere else
You are not a remnant — you are a necessary, living part of this body right now
To the younger members:
Your vision and energy are not threats — they are the continuation of what was built
Do not despise the foundation you were handed
You need their roots; they need your hands
God put you here now, on purpose
To all of us:
Lay down the demand for the church you prefer
Be willing to worship in ways that are not your first preference
Sit with members whose background differs from yours
What we lose is preference; what we gain is a body — one only God could build

CONCLUSION

Return to the opening tension — now with the answer in hand
Restate the Big Idea: God put you here. God put them here. That is enough.
Not better when one generation wins
Not better when one voice dominates
Better together — because that is what God built, and what God builds is good

ALTAR CALL

Three invitations:
Salvation — You have never been placed in this body because you have never trusted Christ. The Spirit is calling. Repent and believe today.
Repentance — You came in carrying the foot's complaint or the ear's complaint. You have been withdrawing, vying, or nursing bitterness. Bring it to the Lord. Lay it down.
Recommitment — A fresh surrender to function where God set you, without comparison, without condition, for the good of this body and the glory of Christ.
"Whatever God has spoken to you this morning, the invitation is open. Come, and let us pray."
