Psalm 83:1–4 “O God, do not keep silence; do not hold your peace or be still, O God! For behold, your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have raised their heads. They lay crafty plans against your people; they consult together against your treasured ones. They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!””

The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

The Truth Will set you free
slavery to Sin
Jesus “the Truth” will set the slave free
If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples
make it rule your life
You are of your father the Devil
attitude and behaviour
devil lies and murders
God is Truth, Love, Grace and Mercy
The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”
Unwilling to admit their defeat they turn to vicious, stinging insults
Samaritan - most dispised
Demon Posessed - to deminish his words
Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”
“I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me”
Jesus’ emphatic denial that the Jews had a right to claim God as their Father
was not satan-inspired
It was his zeal for the Father’s honour
they claim dishonours the Son
they are dishonouring the Father
“I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge”
It is not necessary for the Son to vindicate his own honour
The Father will take care of that and will judge a righteous judgement
“Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death”
keeps my word
accept it by faith
obey it
stand guard over it
Judgement is a matter of life and death
spiritual death is seperation from
the love of God
experiencing a crushing weight of his wrath and condemnation
forever
The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?”
“Now we know that you have a demon!”
The double down on the insult
so much worse than “you are insane”
“Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ “
They point to those God most honoured
even they died
The vehemently reject Jesus’ majestic promise as tangably absurd
“Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died?”
“Who do you make yourself out to be?”
Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’
The glory of a vain pretender or megalomaniac is empty
The Son does not gloriy himself but the Father
The Father is always engaged in the glorification of the Son
But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word.
“whom you say, ‘He is our God.’”
“But you have not known him”
Your boastfully monopolize him but do not know Him
If you know someone you recognise them
If you know their word, you recognise it being spoken
Jesus calls these men liars to their face.
“I would be a liar like you”
“I do know him and I keep his word”
Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.”
They were so proud of being decendants of Abraham
But he would have been displeased with them
Gen 22 - Abraham - The sacrific of Isaac
Abraham trusted in God’s promises (Gen 15 & Gen 17) that through Issac one would come from God to bless all the nations
So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”
Abraham had lived 2,000 years before
Their distain response
how can you claim you know the mind of Abraham when you never met him?
If you claim that Abraham saw you then you must have seen Abraham
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
Truly, Truly - Most solomnly I assure you
There were only two present who knew the mind of Abraham
Jesus doesn’t claim to be a third witness
He claims to be the most important witness
“I AM”
So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
Their rage against this blasphamy was signficant
Lev 24:16 stated it must be punished with death by stoning
not allowed by Roman rule
“Jesus hid himself”
“went out of the temple”
