Acts 2:1-21
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, What a great joy and celebration as the promised helper has arrived and descended upon the Disciples on the Day of Pentecost. Now there were many important and note worthy events that took place on this day, just 10 days after Christ’s Ascension to the right hand of God. When the Holy Spirit descends and lights upon the heads of the disciples appearing as tongues of fire, they go forth to proclaim to the world the joyful news that Jesus Christ has won. He is the Savior, and not just the savior of the Jews, but the Gentiles as well, and this message is to be proclaimed in every land and tongue, that Christ is Victorious.
Speaking in Other Tongues
The Spirit gave to them different languages.
In the City of Jerusalem, there were so many people visiting from different regions, and to ensure that everyone who was there could hear this joyful proclamation the Holy Spirit lit upon their heads and gave them the languages they needed to proclaim the Gospel, the Victory of Christ over the powers of Sin and death that every one would be able to rejoice in the blessings of God our Savior. Proclaim the message clearly they did.
This is not babbling.
It wasn’t just gibberish being proclaimed to the people in Jerusalem, they were proclaiming in various tongues that prior to this they had not spoken, for each person was hearing their own native tongue. Their local dialect, which would mean that it wouldn’t just be in English, but they would sound like they were from Wisconsin. This is why the people marveled and they were trying to figure out what this all meant for it was a sight to behold and amazed the crowd. But we ought to ask,
Why should you care?
You didn’t see it, what does this have to do with your salvation, with the salvation of others, was this day just a special one time event meant only for them on the day of Pentecost. This day reveals God’s plan for salvation and the restoration of mankind to God’s grace, for we witness that Christ is the healer of the nations, and that He will bring together every tribe, and people across the world for they have been saved and united by His blood.
Divisions Between People
We were divided at Babel.
Up until that point we spoke one language, and were united in purpose and communication. You know the importance of sharing a language with someone else if you have ever found yourself in a land that doesn’t speak your language. If you hear English, if you hear them talking about Bubblers, you know these are my people! But God divided the language of man at Babel. Why?
We disobeyed after the flood.
It was a dumb move, and I don’t know how they were persuaded, God had wiped almost the entire population of earth because of their sins, and they were disobeying God again. Instead of spreading out upon the land as they had been instructed, they resolved to make themselves like god once again, and so instead of burning the world to cinders, and everyone being lost, God confused their languages to scatter them across the face of the earth.
You might think what’s the big deal? We joke that men and women manage to speak a different language even though we are both using english, but think what that would be like. Your loved one comes home, and you don’t know what they are saying, your children, aren’t just ignoring you, they literally don’t understand you, and you don’t understand them. Think of the effects going forward.
What about those who didn’t know hebrew?
Who didn’t have God’s Word, who didn’t know what God had promised are done, and now would be unaware of what followed, they may know the account of Adam and Eve, but tribes would be formed, families would piece together new languages out of the words they could figure out, but it created a mess. They went from building a mighty tower, to drawing crude pictures just to figure out what their family member meant.
What does the prophet say?
God will pour out His spirit on all flesh, and he lists those who will prophesy and proclaim, and he concludes with, that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. What a blessing for even those who are not of the blood of Abraham shall share in the inheritance won for us by Christ, for God’s promised savior wasn’t just the children of Jacob by blood, but the children who share in the faith of Abraham, in that promised seed through which all the World would be blessed.
Our Prince of Peace
Jesus’ Victory is for all.
What better picture of that then Pentecost, as the Gospel is proclaimed not just in Hebrew, not just in Greek, but in all the languages that everyone may know of the Victory of Jesus Christ. For the Spirit goes forth to all people, and He does so by the Word that is proclaimed, and to make sure everyone hears it, they were given these different tongues. For
In heaven, every tongue praises Jesus.
When John sees on the day of revelation as the heavens are opened to Him and He sees the Lamb of God ascending to the Throne, every knee in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth bow before Him and sing His praises for He is the God in the flesh who has conquered, and
Jesus opened heaven for you.
It wasn’t because of what we had done, or what Israel had done, for we are sinners who are only deserving of God’s wrath, and displeasure, but God sent His Son into the World to accomplish what we were incapable of finishing, of completing, that is the demands of the Law, and He has proclaimed that the Victory is His. That we might believe it, Jesus sent to us the Holy Spirit, the Helper, the Encourager, to go about the work of Creating Faith by the Word.
The Work of the Spirit
The Spirit points us to Jesus.
On the day of Pentecost this comes through Loud and Clear for the Apostles don’t glorify themselves, they don’t say look at the great gifts we have, and how great our lives are.
Who is proclaimed on Pentecost?
Jesus, it’s all about Jesus and what Jesus has done, and how the Father has fulfilled His promises through the life, and death of Jesus. The Apostles are of little and no account even though they are suddenly speaking in a different languages, they are there with one goal to proclaim Christ. This is what we have to be careful about in the Church, and it is why you will see that we don’t typically go along with a number of different religious services or practices. One such thing is testimonials, because testimonials
Testimonials often glorify people.
They lead people to believe falsely in what God will do for you, for instead of pointing us ahead to the Victory that Christ has for us, and the promised inheritance, it glorifies the works of man, and how life will get better if you are just a good enough person, have enough faith, etc. just like they did. So why isn’t your life better? Well there message is because you haven’t done enough.
It is more important to see Jesus.
It is Christ who is our Savior, it is Jesus who shed His blood for you, It is Jesus who decided to save you, and it is Jesus who sent the Spirit that created faith in your heart that you might be saved. That’s the most important thing that Christ has done, that’s why every tongue praises Him, He purchased and won you from all sin, death, and the power of the devil not with gold or silver, but with his holy precious blood, his innocent suffering and death that you may be His own. This message we can proclaim to all nations.
The Church of All Nations
We are found across the globe.
Because our faith isn’t built upon a subjective experience, but upon the eternal Word that became flesh, was crucified, died, and was buried, and rose again and has ascended into heaven. It doesn’t matter what our life experiences are, how small or great our struggles might be, this faith has been created by the Word, and the
The message is for all.
It doesn’t matter if you are rich, poor, young, old, living 2000 years ago, or living 100 years from now, we are all sinners in need of Christ, and Christ sent the Spirit that we might believe. So it doesn’t matter how challenging, or easy your life has been,
We still share Jesus.
For we proclaim Christ and Him Crucified, not ourselves. What are we, and what are our lives, for God has varied our days and our struggles, and if faith is built upon that subjective, shifting foundation, then it will be a mess. But Jesus Christ, the Son of God in the flesh, who did He shed his blood for? You and Me. That is worth sharing with the whole world. For there is the Son of God who died, and rose again, and that is to be proclaimed in every tongue, to every nation, and tribe of people.
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, we rejoice that the Holy Spirit has been poured out upon the Church and that The Spirit who inspired the Apostles, and Prophets, has brought that message across the centuries to so many people of different nations, and languages. It will be our joy to continue proclaiming this message to those we meet for we do not proclaim ourselves, rather we proclaim Jesus Christ our Lord and what He did there upon Calvary for the whole world. In Jesus name. Amen.
