Series | Ephesians
Open your bible to Eph Ch 5… as Paul addresses proper order in the Home.
Paul orders in the church / and now he wants to make sure we order in our homes
Before we talk about how Paul brought order at home..let me give you some…
Context: for 1st Century family relationships:
Men had all the power… from Law & order, to the money… they final say on everything.
They we’re typically authoritarian, selfish, neglectful and absent men.
Women, in general.. had virtually no rights and we’re inferior. They were naturally embittered as … Men were often older… which ment… women had to also respect their elders…
Women likely submitted out of fear and did not know how to trust men.
Don’t forget what Paul said to the church which includes the family unit:
5:21 Submit one to another (Mutual submission)
With this in mind… lets start at Eph. 5… verse 22
Eph. 5:22…
Wives and Husbands
22 Wives (With all your walls and lack of trust, here is what I want from you), submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
25 Husbands (Men with all that power here is what I want you to do with it) , love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
Here is the Purpose of Marriage… v.32
32 This mystery( Mysterious relationship called Marriage) is profound, and I am saying that it refers to… (It… gives the world a living picture of ) Christ and the church
Marriage is a HIGH Calling - a Picutre of the Gospel to the world around us.
V. 33 he summarizes it all and says..
33 However, let each one of you love his wife(Wives be lovable) as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband(Husband be respectable).
Children and Parents
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
***Feel free to encourage people to listen to the Holy Spirit speak to them personally as the message is preached
LETS PRAY
YOU CAN WALK OFF THE STAGE WHEN YOU SAY AMEN

Let me ask you this… (MEMORIZE)
PAUSE -CLIP 2 Online Seeker - BEGINING
Are you tired of a chaotic family life?
living with an Unhealthy marriage or relationship with your kids… your family? Know…. You’re not alone… Every challenge you face in family-life… The Bible has a answer…. God wants to help you get your home in ORDER.
PAUSE -CLIP 2 Online Seeker ENDING
and…. If we don’t get this today… here’s…
Whats at stake?
If we don’t embrace a biblical model of family; we’ll find ourselves unable to communicate the gospel to the world around us.
Our witness for Jesus is diminished - And marriages does to.
This is why we need…
Sermon Title | Order in the Home
Here are 3 roles Paul calls out…. to bring order in our homes.
The first…. IN YOUR NOTES… is…
A call to WIVES(v.22-24)
A call to WIVES(v.22-24)
We see this in v. 22 -it says
Wives SUBMIT…
Before you get too triggered (Remember the context)
The word submission here is not Military metaphor…
This is about self direction…. a willingness… and CHOICE to trust with all your heart.
If a wife is supposed to be a visual picture of the church/the bride of Christ … What ways does Christ call us submit?… This is a guide for wives
IN YOUR NOTES… she is called to..
1. Submit to His WISDOM v.24, Prov. 31:11-13
1. Submit to His WISDOM v.24, Prov. 31:11-13
In the same way the church should submit to the wisdom of Jesus…so, wives submit to the wisdom of their Husbands -
This is not saying women are not wise…
In fact… Understand this is NOT a one sided call… Prov. 31:11-12 on the screen
The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.
The wise for a man to listen to his wife…. he will actually gain from listening to her.
Yet he bares the responsibility as Christ does to lead the family to the best decisions.
This is still team work…
What are ways bride of Christ is called submit?… as a guide for wives
IN YOUR NOTES… she is called to…
2. Submit to his VISION v.24
2. Submit to his VISION v.24
We see this in v. 24 the Husband is the head -
In the same way Christ speaks into the vision of the church, what its supposed to look like, what it should do… in the same way… the Husband should be the lead visionary of the home.
Leading the family in the things of God, and using the Strengths and weakness of the Unique gifts he and his wife bring to the table for the betterment of the family.
Headship is about One Vision? This means She's see’s herself on his team, aligned with his leadership, not working against it.
A beleiver working against the Plan of Jesus is not much of a beleiver.
Lastly… as a guide for wives… IN YOUR NOTES… she is called to…
3. Submit to his INFLUENCE v.26-27
3. Submit to his INFLUENCE v.26-27
This is about the sanctifying work of Christ…. Christ uses his influences in our life… for our good…
In the same way a godly husband will also use his influence for the good of his wife.
Wives, It will be very difficult for you to become the woman of God you are called to be… while being defensive and closed off towards your Husbands influence.
****Wife is broken and your struggling to trust: the love of a Godly man can heal. His love will help open you up… to trust again, and become whole woman of God that Jesus imagines.
Look at the screen with me...
Men often feel like their wives don’t submit to them…
HERE is the…
Challenge to Husbands: Be the kind of MAN your wife wants to SUBMIT to. (Screen only)
Challenge to Husbands: Be the kind of MAN your wife wants to SUBMIT to. (Screen only)
Men, the more you become like Christ, the easier you will make it for your wife to submit to you.
This is not a CART-BLAUNCHE - SUBMIT to me out of my AUTHORITY -
To the women: If you find yourself resistant to his leadership, his love, and his desires - this is a sign that your heart is turned away from him not towards him - this is out of order.
Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…
Question: How can you better submit to your husband/Christ?
Question: How can you better submit to your husband/Christ?
Men - as your wives… what do you need from me to make it easier for you to trust me?
If your not married, ask this of yourself regarding your relationship with Jesus. and your friends.

Sermon Title | Order in the Home
If you want to reorder your chaotic home…
The next thing I see IN YOUR NOTES… is…
A call to HUSBANDS. (25-33)
A call to HUSBANDS. (25-33)
We see this beginning in v. 25 of our text..
The Bible is saying, to the men in the 1st Century… 'You have all that power? Here's what you do with it…
Paul does not tell husbands here to demand submission… Rather he tells them to love them like Christ.
What are ways Christ modeled his love for the bride… that we can use as a guide for men?
IN YOUR NOTES…we notice
1. His love is SACRIFICIAL v.25
1. His love is SACRIFICIAL v.25
We see this in v. 25 as he gave himself up for her.
For husbands: This means to lay down your agenda, preferences, and comfort…. all for her good.
For example: I’ve had to give up my love for ONIONS and GARLIC for the sake of my wife. How many of you know I am suffering big time for her good.
She needs our house to look a certain way - on my best days - I give that to her - on the other days I struggle.
What are ways Christ modeled his love for the bride…
IN YOUR NOTES…we notice
2. His love is SANCTIFYING v.26
2. His love is SANCTIFYING v.26
We see this in v. 26 as he cleanses her with the word.
Men: This means your love is… GOOD for her… it should lift her up and and bring out her BEAUTY when she is with you. This is a powerful role you play!
What are… ways Christ modeled his love for the bride… as a guide for men.
We see here IN YOUR NOTES…
2. His love is SOOTHING v.26
2. His love is SOOTHING v.26
We see this in v. 26.. it says… we are to nourish and cherish
When I submit to the Love of Christ… he showers me with grace, mercy and love.
This is the opposite of authoritarian control… but its life giving…
Men… be life GIVING
When Jesus walks through the door - its refreshing - how about when you walk in after a long day?
Look at the screen with me...
Women often feel like their husbands don’t love them well…
Here is
Challenge to Wives: Be the kind of wife your husband wants to spend his life loving. (Screen only)
Challenge to Wives: Be the kind of wife your husband wants to spend his life loving. (Screen only)
If he never measure’s up when he's around you, You will never feel loved… by the man you call husband…
Start complementing… notice the good that he brings to the table… He will probably take it up a few notches.
He doesn’t need you to be his boss, or his mommy…. he needs you to be his wife.
To the men in the room:
Men…some of you think…. Going to work everyday, providing a house, money for groceries & the kids… that you’ve done your job (Thats hardly what Scripture is teaching)
If you find yourself constantly ignoring her needs, over focused on work, leaving her to raise the kids and manage the house own her own… you are not loving her well.
This is a sign that your heart is turned away… and not towards her - this is out of order.
Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…
Question: How can you better love your wife/Christ?
Question: How can you better love your wife/Christ?
Wives - as your husband… what do you need from me to make it easier for you to love me?
If your single.. ask this of your relationship with God and your friends.
To every single person young and old:
***Can you see how important it is to choose a spouse who has their eyes on Christ?
Marriage is hard enough when two people are focused on Jesus let alone.
Don’t make it harder by getting involved with someone who does not value Christ in the same way as you.

This is not just a call to to
Husbands and wives
We also see … IN YOUR NOTES that it’s…
A call to CHILDREN (6:1-4)
A call to CHILDREN (6:1-4)
We see this in ch 6 verse one of our text…it says..
English Standard Version Chapter 5
Children and Parents (Servants) v 6:1-
Young person… Obedience leads to blessings. Disobedience does not.
***I don’t have much time left so let me say this…
3 practical things about Obedience that the Lord requires:
3 practical things about Obedience that the Lord requires:
True biblical obedience requires all three oh these things IN YOUR NOTES…
Obedience requires HEART (Prov. 23:26).
Obedience requires HEART (Prov. 23:26).
it requires…
URGENCY (Prov. 15:5)
it requires…
COMPLETION (Prov. 15:5)
Funny story about A little boy was misbehaving in church, and after several warnings his parent finally told him, “Sit down.”
He refused.
The parent said more firmly, “Sit down now.”
Grumbling, the boy slowly sat down, crossed his arms, and said under his breath:
“I may be sitting down on the outside… but I’m standing up on the inside.”
Young people, God wants your obediance on the INSIDE…. from your heart.
He wants you to have URGENCY in your obedience.. it’s not on your time table when not when you feel like it… becuase “Delayed obedience is disobedience”.
Obediance is not picking and choosing what rules you want to follow; God requires complete obedience.
I promise - IT WILL GO WELL WITH YOU… when you are Biblically obedient to your parents.
Here’s Challenge to the parents:
God says don't provoke them or push their buttons… But provoke them to do good with with grace and mercy… (This includes discipline and follow through)
We don’t let our kids just do whatever they want - this is not biblical order.
Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting every child/teen to ask themselves today…
Question: Which one of these do you struggle with, how can you do better?
Question: Which one of these do you struggle with, how can you do better?
If you don’t know how to answer this question, you can ask your parents, they will help you out.
Everyone in the room can surely consider this in their relationship with Jesus

PAUSE -CLIP BEGINING
Church…. family life does NOT have to be chaotic…
If your family is chaotic…
Paul summarizes everything he wants to say to say about chaotic families in Eph 4 Im going to paraphrase it.
He says…
Submit, Love, Obey
This should not be unfamiliar… if you know your bible
It’s how we are called honor Jesus in our every day family life.
Jesus wants the family to honor one another in these roles.
it’s the antidote to a chaotic family.
How are you doing with this?
PAUSE -CLIP ENDING
Today don’t walk away focused on others - but yourself.
Speak only for yourself.

What stuck out to you the in this passage? Eph. 5:20-6:4
How can you better submit to your husband/Christ?
How can you better love to your wife/Christ?
Which one of these do you struggle with, how can you do better?
What might the Holy Spirit be saying to you in light of this teaching?
How might the Holy Spirit want to transform you in light of this teaching?
What actions might the Holy Spirit want to take in light of this teaching?
Tongues & Interpretation
1. To STRENGTHEN the Church (1 Cor14:5)
For prophecy is greater than SPEAKING in TONGUES, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be STRENGTHENED.
Believers, God has operated through this gift today to strengthen you today. Let your faith be strengthened and know that God is in control and using supernatural measures to speak to us.
2. Is a SIGN for unbelievers. (1Cor. 14: 21a, 22)
1 Corinthians 14:21–22 (ESV)
In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.
22 - So you see that speaking in tongues is a SIGN, not for believers, but for UNBELIEVERS.
The Bible explains to us God has chosen to use this gift to be a sign for you. A sign for what? It is a sign of his realness for those of you who have been doubting or questioning the existence of God. He wants you to know he is REAL and he wants to bring you spiritual life and health. If you're in here today and you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior... he wants you to know he has gone to great lengths to show you his love today. (Great opportunity for a salvation altar call if it fits).
