2 Chronicles 15:2

Introduction

As I was reading through 2 Chronicles several weeks ago in preparation for this sermon, I was struck by the phrase “seek Yahweh,” that kept coming up again and again. If you would just seek Me!
Then, after our class on Ezekiel 18, Travis and I were talking and he brought up that Manasseh was a great example of what Ezekiel 18 is teaching and when I came back to this outline I realized that the whole book is just that.
Every scenario laid out in the Ezekiel 18 is found repeatedly in the book of 2 Chronicles.
Let’s look at this together.

Some Turn Away from God Despite Godly Parents

Ezekiel 18:5, 10
Jehoram turned from Jehoshaphat (2 Chron. 17:3-6; 19:3; 20:3-4; 21:1-4, 6, 11)
Manasseh turned from Hezekiah (2 Chron. 29:3, 6; 30:6-9, 18-19; 31:21; 32:33-33:1, 3, 6, 9-10).
Josiah’s sons turned away from him (2 Chron. 34:2-3, 27; 35:18; 36:12-13).

Some Turn Toward God Despite Wicked Parents

Ezek. 18:14
Hezekiah is the son of Ahaz (2 Chron. 28:2-4, 24-25; 29:1-3, 9-10).
Josiah is the son of Amon (2 Chron. 33:22-23; 34:1-3).
Other learn and turn (2 Chron. 27:2; 17:3-4; 30:6-11)

Some Turn Away After Beginning Well

Ezek. 18:24
Asa (2 Chron. 14:2-4; 15:12, 15; 16:1-3, 7-12).
Joash (2 Chron. 24:2, 17-18, 20).
Uzziah (2 Chron. 26:4-5, 15-16)

Some Turn Back and Find Mercy

Ezek. 18:21, 27
Rehoboam (2 Chron. 12:1-7, 12).
Asa (2 Chron. 15:1-8).
Manasseh (2 Chron. 33:2-6, 9-16).

Conclusion

Just as we talked about in our lesson on Ezekiel 18, this doesn’t mean we have no influence on our children. That we should just throw our hands up and say they are just gonna turn out how they turn out.
What is does mean is that nothing is set in stone.
That is a sober warning to those who are running well.
And that is a message of hope to those who aren’t.
Will you seek the Lord. He will let Himself be found.
