Paul teaches that the Law of God is holy, righteous, and good, but it cannot produce righteousness within us. The Law exposes sin while the flesh resists obedience. Yet through Jesus Christ, believers have died to the old covenant of condemnation and now belong to Christ in a new covenant relationship that produces spiritual fruit through the Spirit. This passage moves us from frustration in ourselves to freedom in Jesus Christ, culminating in the glorious truth of Romans 8:1 that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

🎬 Opening Paragraph
Have you ever asked yourself this question:
“If I belong to Jesus, why is there still a war inside me?”
“If I belong to Jesus, why is there still a war inside me?”
You love God, yet you still battle temptation.
You know truth, yet your flesh still pulls in the opposite direction.
You pray for victory, yet some days feel like failure.
Many believers secretly live exhausted because they think the Christian life is about trying harder. So they carry guilt when they fail, shame when they struggle, and frustration when they fall short.
Deep inside, we know there has to be more than endless striving.
Then Romans 7 gives us a vision of what is really happening. Paul reveals that righteousness was never meant to come through human effort, but through covenant union with Jesus Christ. And when we finally see that truth, we can take the first step toward freedom by surrendering ourselves fully to Him instead of depending on ourselves.
Paul pulls back the curtain on the human heart and answers one of the deepest struggles in the Christian life.
Phrase of the Day: “The Law exposed me, but Christ embraced me.”
Today we are going to walk through four covenant truths in Romans 7:
We died to the old covenant so we could belong to Christ.
The Law revealed the problem but could never provide a solution.
The flesh still tries to pull us back into the old life.
The inner man longs for the covenant life of Christ.
And at the end of all the struggle, all the frustration, and all the warfare, Paul leads us into one of the greatest promises ever written:
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
📌 1. We Died to the Old Covenant So We Could Belong to Christ.
📌 1. We Died to the Old Covenant So We Could Belong to Christ.
1 Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. 4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.
Context:
Paul opens Romans 7 with covenant language about our death in Christ that has set us free from the Law. But freedom from the Law was never the final goal. Jesus fulfilled the righteous demands of the Law, and now through covenant union with Him, we belong to Christ and walk in the righteousness that can only be acheived in the Spirit.
“Jesus did not save you just to forgive you. He saved you so you could belong to Him.”
The Law Could Demand Righteousness but Could Not Produce Righteousness
The Law Could Demand Righteousness but Could Not Produce Righteousness
Paul says we were once bound to the Law. The Law stood over us demanding righteousness while exposing our failures. The Law could tell us what holiness looked like, but it could not make us holy.

Imagine a woman who wakes up every single morning trying her best to please her husband.
She cooks the meals.
She cleans the house.
She works hard all day.
But no matter what she does, every conversation ends the same way.
“You missed a spot.”
“You should have done better.”
“That’s not enough.”
So she tries harder the next day.
But the harder she tries, the more exhausted she becomes realizing she can never fully meet his expectations.
But late at night, she dreams about a different kind of husband.
A husband who would accept her for who she is and make up the difference when she falls short instead of just pointing out her failures.
A husband who would guide her into truth instead of constantly condemning her mistakes.
A husband who would walk beside her, strengthen her, and help her become what she could never become on her own.
That is exactly who Jesus is for us.
That is what life under the Law versus life in Christ looks like.
The Law is holy.
The standard is righteous.
The commandments are perfect.
But the Law continually exposes where we fall short without giving us the power to change.
Then Jesus steps in.
And instead of saying,
“Try harder,”
He says,
“Come to Me.”
He fulfills the righteous demands of the Law on our behalf, and through covenant union with Him, we no longer live trying to earn righteousness.
“The Law demanded righteousness. Jesus is righteousness.”
We now walk in the righteousness of the One to whom we belong.
Union with Christ Produces Spiritual Fruit
Union with Christ Produces Spiritual Fruit
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
That fruit is not manufactured through pressure. It is produced through connection.

A branch does not strain to produce grapes. It simply stays connected to the vine.
The life of the vine flows through the branch naturally producing fruit.
Some believers are exhausted because they are trying to produce fruit without abiding in Christ.
That is spiritual burnout.
Notice the purpose of this new covenant:
4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.
Fruit is the evidence of connection to the vine.
Fruit is the evidence of connection to the vine.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

Meaning & Purpose
Meaning & Purpose
Many people spend their entire lives trying to prove their worth.
But when you belong to Christ, your identity no longer comes from performance. Your purpose flows from relationship. You are now Mrs. Jesus Christ.
You stop living for approval and start living from acceptance.

7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

I remember when my daughter was about two years old. She was standing beside a nightstand reaching for something she was not supposed to touch. I looked at her and said, “Baby, don’t touch that.”
She stopped and looked right at me with that little expression that basically said, “Well, what are you going to do about it?”
Then slowly she started reaching her hand back up there again.
I said, “Baby, don’t touch that.”
And she looked at me again and slowly started raising her hand one more time.
Finally, when she reached over and grabbed it, I smacked her little hand and she started crying.
I looked at her and said, “I told you not to touch that.”
That moment perfectly illustrates Romans 7.
Before the command, the object was not even the issue. But the moment the command came, rebellion rose up inside her heart.
The command did not create the rebellion. The command revealed the rebellion.

Many believers secretly live under anxiety because they think every failure means God is pulling away from them.
But conviction is not rejection.
Conviction is God lovingly revealing what He wants to heal.
Exposure is mercy.

13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

Sin Begins Long Before the Action
Sin Begins Long Before the Action
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Sin starts internally before it ever manifests externally.

The only way to defeat the flesh is to kill the deeds of the flesh.

5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
For an addict the gateway to cocaine might be drinking.
You cannot defeat the flesh through the flesh.
You cannot defeat the flesh through the flesh.

Character & Virtue
Character & Virtue
Romans 7 exposes the destructive habits that keep people trapped in cycles of shame, addiction, anger, lust, pride, and bitterness.
Jesus does not simply forgive sin.
Jesus transforms character. “What do you want?”
The Spirit forms us into the image of Christ over time. Your wants and desires become His.
1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?
Application
Application
Some of you keep trying harder instead of surrendering deeper.
Willpower is not enough.
The flesh is stronger than human determination.
Victory comes through dependence upon Christ.

21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
The Battle Is in the Mind.
The Battle Is in the Mind.
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
“Dead people do not fight sin. Living people do.”
“Dead people do not fight sin. Living people do.”
The victory is not overcoming the flesh but walking in step with the Spirit that saved you.
The victory is not overcoming the flesh but walking in step with the Spirit that saved you.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
The Christian life is not the absence of conflict.
The Christian life is learning where victory comes from.
The Christian life is not the absence of war. It is the presence of a Deliverer.
The Christian life is not the absence of war. It is the presence of a Deliverer.
Paul cries: “Who will deliver me?”
Not what. “Who.”
Because the answer is not another rule. The answer is a Deliverer.
Because the answer is not another rule. The answer is a Deliverer.
25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
The Law exposed me, but Christ embraced me.
The Law exposed me, but Christ embraced me.
🧩 Conclusion
Romans 7 takes us deep into the struggle of the human condition.
The Law exposed our sin.
The flesh revealed our weakness.
The struggle exposed our helplessness.
Paul wanted us to feel the frustration of self-effort so we would stop depending on ourselves and start depending fully upon Jesus Christ.
The Law could reveal sin, but it could not remove condemnation.
The flesh could create bondage, but it could not produce freedom.
And after all the guilt…
all the frustration…
all the failure…
all the striving…
Paul finally lifts his eyes off himself and onto Jesus Christ.
And heaven thunders:
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
You belong to another now. You belong to Christ.
🙏 Communion
As we come to communion today, this image becomes more than a picture of spiritual struggle. It becomes a reminder of why we need the cross of Jesus Christ every single day.
Romans 7 shows us the battle that rages inside every believer. On one side is the flesh pulling us toward sin, shame, temptation, and bondage. On the other side is the Spirit drawing us toward truth, righteousness, freedom, and life in Christ.
And right in the middle is us.
That is why the man in the image is holding his head. Because the battlefield is the mind. Every believer knows what it feels like to wrestle between what we know is right and what our flesh still desires.
Paul said:
“For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” Romans 7:19 (ESV)
The chains on the left side represent the bondage of sin. Sin promises freedom but eventually produces slavery.
But the right side reminds us there is another voice speaking over our lives. The Spirit reminds us that we belong to Christ. That we are not abandoned in the struggle. That Jesus has already paid for our sin through His broken body and shed blood.
That is why communion matters.
Communion is not for people who have it all together.
Communion is for people who know they need Jesus.
At this table we remember:
His body was broken because our flesh could never fulfill the Law.
His blood was shed because our sin demanded payment.
His grace covers the struggle that Romans 7 exposes.
The bottom of the image shows the entire movement of the Christian life:
The Problem: The flesh wars against the Spirit.
The Cry: “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me?”
The Answer: “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
And that answer is what we celebrate at the Lord’s Table today.
Communion reminds us that our hope is not in our performance.
Our hope is in His finished work.
So today, do not come to this table pretending you are strong.
Come remembering that Christ is sufficient.
Because: The Law exposed me, but Christ embraced me.
