Exhortation

The activity of advising one another how to live a godly life as prescribed by God's word.

Exhortation, within our Care Groups, is usually a gentle, humble word or message that guides one along the path of Christian obedience. While exhortation sometimes involves strongly confronting an individual with perceived sin, this type of exhortation is typically uncommon in small group gatherings. This is because confrontation of this type should generally be done in one-on–one context, rather than in small group settings (). More frequently, exhortation is simply practical advice rooted in God's word. It affirms God's holy standards, and addresses how Christians might overcome temptation and experience victory over sin. Exhortation in our care group setting is not preaching. Rather, it is humble, godly advice often applicable for all who are present.

Accountability

The process of holding one another responsible to living a godly life.

Even though the word "accountability" is not a biblical term the practice is certainly encouraged in Scripture (, , ). Accountability is a highly intentional activity and a powerful tool for growth and life change. Accountability happens when believers hold one another responsible for doing what biblical exhortation says they are to do. For accountability to be effective, however, a significant amount of vulnerability and honesty is required. In order for such vulnerability to occur, a high degree of trust needs to be upheld within the care group. Members must feel absolutely certain that the things that they share with the group, stay in the group. Thus, the care group leader must strive to encourage and enforce confidentiality at all times.

Encouragement

The act of supporting one another and inspiring courage, hope, and confidence in living a godly life in Christ Jesus.

Encouragement happens when believer say things to one another like "You can do this because Jesus Christ lives in you!" Or "Go on and do this because God's Word says you should!" Encouragement also involves affirming and honestly praising one another for our gifts, strengths, accomplishments and victories. In sum, encouragement is the clearest verbal expression of loving and mutually caring for each other in ministry. Encouragement should also be the most prominent element of the three components of Christian intentionality.
