I’ve read the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 so times and for most of my life, I thought the point was just “Jesus can do big miracles.”
But I missed what He was actually trying to show us.
Here’s the scene: Thousands of people have followed Christ into a remote area to hear Him teach, it’s getting late, everyone’s hungry, and the disciples are concerned because there’s no food.
“And when it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.” (Matthew 14:14 KJV)
Jesus’ compassion did not stop at healing their sick. As evening came the people grew hungry. Jesus acted on their need for food, but not before setting His disciples up for an important lesson.
Send them away. The disciples saw the problem and their solution was simple....
This isn’t our responsibility, let them figure it out themselves.
BUT THE MESSIAH HAD A DIFFERENT PLAN.
“But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.” (Matthew 14:16)
Why did Jesus tell the disciples to give the people something to eat?
To test their faith and teach them to rely on His divine provision
Give ye them to eat. Wait - What?
They didn’t have food.
They didn’t have resources.
Jesus wanted them to recognize their human limitations and realize that with God, the mist impossible tasks can be accomplished
They had 5 loaves and two fish from a boy’s lunch
Just enough to feed one person, NOT THOUSANDS
What was Jesus trying to show them?
(He was teaching them to gather what little they had and step out in obedience, trusting that He would multiply their efforts)
And that’s exactly the point!
So, here’s what I’m learning: Jesus wasn’t just demonstrating His power to multiply food......
He was showing us that He’s the fulfillment of everything God promised Israel in the wilderness.
Remember the manna?
For forty years, God fed the Israelites in the desert with bread from heaven.....
This was daily provision that came not from their effort, but from His faithfulness
“Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate everyday.” (Exodus 16:4 KJV)
Now here’s Jesus in a desert place, multiplying bread to feed thousands, and the connection is unmistakable....
He’s showing them (and us) that He is the Bread from Heaven, the fulfillment of what the manna pointed to all along.
A declaration Jesus made in the Gospel of John, where He proclaimed, “I am the Bread of Life.”
When He said this, what He was saying that Just as physical bread sustains the body, He alone spiritually sustains the soul and offers eternal life.
But the people missed it. They saw the miracle and wanted more free food.
“Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.” (John 6:26 KJV)
They were focused on their physical hunger being satisfied when Jesus was trying to show them their spiritual hunger could only be satisfied by Him.
So, the very next day, Jesus makes it crystal clear:
“I am the Bread of Life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.” (John 6:48-50 KJV)
THIS! Please read it again if you didn’t catch it.
The manna in the wilderness sustained them temporarily, but Jesus sustains them eternally....
He’s not just providing for physical needs
He’s the provision itself.
The miracle wasn’t just about feeding hungry people...
It was about revealing who Jesus is and what He came to do.
He’s the Provider who meets our needs when we have nothing to offer.
He’s the One who takes our inadequate offerings and makes them sufficient for His purposes.
He’s the fulfillment of every promise God made about sustaining His people.
Your challenge this week: Stop looking to Jesus just for what He can give you and start seeing Him for who He is.
When you pray, ask yourself: Am I seeking Jesus because of what He can do for me, or because of who He is?
Am I focused on the temporary provision I need today, or the eternal provision He offers?
Do I trust Him enough?
Because the miracle that He did isn’t the point, family....He is!
