The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

Abiding in Christ (v31-32)

video

Abiding means to remain in Christ in all aspects of life & circumstances.
Real disciples of Christ abide in Him as Christ abides in them by granting them His Spirit and faith.
Abiding in Christ depends on holding on to His teachings ().

24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.

As you follow Him, God reveals His truth to you while unveiling any falsehood from your life
thus setting you free.
igi
Results of abiding in Christ:
Fruitfulness- “Bearing fruit” is physical evidence that can only come from the spiritual (as it cannot come from human effort), this includes developing christian character.
Answered Prayer- If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you ().
The faithful lady and the elders who pray for rain. Surrender + Obedience = True Discipleship
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you ().
Freedom from persistent sin- Christians are still not completely sinless, but abiding in Christ lessens the grip of bondage and the penalty of sin.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). ().
Relationship with the Father & confidence on the last day- As one obeys, the Father’s love remains in that person & is given an assurance of the last day.

Freedom Vs. Slavery (v 33-38)

Sin is the result of the fall, where creation rebels against the creator.
Sin is also a result of the devil’s activity and temptation in a fallen world dominated by sin.
Because of sin, humanity is sinful in nature
thus opposing God & deserving eternal death.
Slavery & addiction: no self-control & will never satisfies; thus Freedom in Christ
Pride- When one focuses on oneself’s achievements instead of God’s. self-centered vs. God-centered
Jesus Christ alone can free us from the bondage of sin.
Death of Jesus Christ- God grants sinners forgiveness & eternal life, this is why Christians focus upon the death & resurrection of Christ in our baptisms & supper
We become God’s children through faith in Jesus Christ
thus God dealing with us as adopted children with a royal and eternal inheritance. Freedom!
But what does this look like?
God loves His children ()
God disciplines His children ()
God does not abandon His children ()

Surrender + Obedience = True Discipleship

God’s children imitate their heavenly Father & live by His standards (, )
True discipleship follows Christ & persevere
through the costs of following the Lord.
Imitators- Are fans of Christ who just say & pretend to follow Him, but have no spiritual change within. These type tend to wither as the costs of following become evident.
When one is truly being transformed, he falls in love with His word, His presence, & will.
So much so, that they can’t help but to testify & share the good news, thus becoming a witness. Once one knows God truly, they can make Him known to the community around.
