Rebellion or Rest

Hebrew 3:7-19 We live in an age that is absolutely obsessed with trying to manufacture peace. We download meditation apps to calm our anxious minds. We wear devices that track our sleep cycles down to the minute, desperately trying to optimize our rest. We turn on white noise machines to drown out the chaos of the world around us.

Yet, despite all of our technology, tracking, and engineering, we are perhaps the most restless generation to ever live.

Centuries ago, Saint Augustine diagnosed this exact human condition when he prayed, “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you.” True rest cannot be downloaded. It cannot be tracked on an app. It is not the mere absence of noise. Rest is a spiritual reality, and it requires a daily decision of the heart. Every single morning we wake up, and every single night we lay our heads down, we are faced with a definitive, unavoidable choice.

Today you will either continue to rebel in life or find rest in Christ.

Harden harts bring a hardened life.

Watch Hebrews 3:12 “12 Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.”

Unbelieving

Deceiving Hebrews 3:13 “13 But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception.”

Hebrews 3:16–18 “

16 For who heard and rebelled?

Wasn’t it all who came out of Egypt under Moses?

17 With whom was God angry for forty years?

Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, if not to those who disobeyed?”

Rest for the Weary

Today Hebrews 3:7 “7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you hear his voice,”

Hear Hebrews 3:15 “15 As it is said: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you.

Participate

Hebrews 3:14 “14 For we have become participants in Christ if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start.” Enter Rest.

Conclusion: The Choice Before You We can keep tracking our sleep, optimizing our schedules, and trying to engineer a peaceful life in our own power. But the soul cannot be tricked by white noise.

The wilderness of life will either drive you to a hardened independence, or it will drive you to the feet of King Jesus.

As you leave this place and step back into the demands of your week, the voice of the Holy Spirit is whispering to you. The choice is yours, and the timeline is urgent.

Today you will either continue to rebel in life or find rest in Christ.

Will you keep fighting for control, or will you surrender and enter His rest? Let us pray.
