Text: Ephesians 6:10-18
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

Introduction
Introduction
One of the greatest mistakes in modern Christianity is either ignoring spiritual warfare completely or becoming obsessed with it to an unhealthy degree. Scripture teaches balance. The Bible reveals that there is a real adversary, real spiritual warfare, and real attacks against the people of God, yet it also reveals a victorious Savior whose authority is greater than every principality and power.
Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus — a city deeply involved in occultism, idol worship, and spiritual darkness. In Acts 19, many who practiced curious arts burned their books after encountering the power of Jesus Christ. So when Paul speaks about spiritual warfare in Ephesians 6, he is not speaking theoretically. He is addressing a church surrounded by demonic influence and spiritual conflict.
Ephesians 6:11 says:
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
The word “wiles” comes from the Greek word methodeia, meaning:
• Craftiness
• Deception
• Strategic scheming
• Systematic entrapment
Satan rarely begins with open destruction. He begins subtly.
A thought.
A compromise.
A wound.
An offense.
A temptation.
A lie.
The enemy works progressively.
Few people wake up one morning completely bound. Most spiritual destruction happens slowly through ignored compromise and repeated agreement with darkness.
2 Corinthians 2:11 says:
“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
The word “devices” means:
• Schemes
• Purposes
• Thought processes
The enemy studies weaknesses, emotional wounds, pride, loneliness, trauma, bitterness, lust, and isolation. Hell looks for openings.
But tonight is not about glorifying darkness.
Tonight is about exposing darkness through the light of Jesus Christ.
For what is exposed can be healed.
And what is discerned can be resisted.
1. The Level of Temptation
1. The Level of Temptation
Scripture: Matthew 4:1-11
“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.”
The first level of demonic attack is temptation.
Temptation is an external invitation toward sin, compromise, rebellion, or unbelief.
Notice something important:
Jesus Himself was tempted.
Hebrews 4:15 (KJV)
“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
Temptation is not sin.
Agreement with temptation becomes sin.
Satan tempted Jesus through three major areas:
Appetite
“If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.”
Identity
“If thou be the Son of God…”
Pride and Power
“All these things will I give thee…”
These same doors are still used today.
The enemy whispers:
• “You deserve this.”
• “Nobody will know.”
• “Compromise just a little.”
• “God has abandoned you.”
• “You are missing out.”
• “You can handle this secretly.”
James 1:14-15 reveals the progression:
“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin…”
The enemy seeks agreement before access.
This is why believers must guard:
• Their thoughts
• Their eyes
• Their conversations
• Their influences
• Their private life
Many battles are won or lost before anyone else sees them.
2. The Level of Oppression
2. The Level of Oppression
Scripture: Acts 10:38
“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil…”
Oppression is heavier than temptation.
The Greek implication behind “oppressed” refers to harsh spiritual pressure, domination, or being weighed down.
Oppression attacks:
• Peace
• Stability
• Clarity
• Confidence
• Spiritual focus
This can manifest through:
• Persistent heaviness
• Fear
• Anxiety
• Confusion
• Mental exhaustion
• Spiritual numbness
• Constant condemnation
• Isolation
• Nightmares
• Hopelessness
Some believers think every emotional struggle is purely natural while ignoring spiritual warfare completely.
Not every battle is demonic.
But some battles absolutely are spiritual.
Luke 22:31 says:
“And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.”
The word “sift” paints the picture of violent shaking.
Peter was under spiritual assault before he denied Jesus.
The enemy especially targets:
• Prayer lives
• Worship
• Marriages
• Unity
• Purity
• Leadership
• Identity
• Discernment
Why?
Because Satan attacks whatever threatens his kingdom.
This is why atmosphere matters.
Not every voice deserves access.
Not every relationship is harmless.
Not every environment is spiritually neutral.
Some people cannot understand why their peace disappears because they keep entertaining what God told them to separate from.
3. The Level of Bondage
3. The Level of Bondage
Scripture: John 8:34-36
“Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.”
Bondage develops through repeated agreement.
What begins as temptation eventually becomes captivity.
Strongholds are built through repeated patterns:
• Sin
• Trauma
• Unforgiveness
• Addictions
• Occult involvement
• Sexual immorality
• Bitterness
• Pride
• Manipulation
• Anger
• Jealousy
Bondage blinds discernment.
One of the most dangerous spiritual conditions is when a person no longer recognizes their decline.
Judges 16:20 says of Samson:
“And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.”
That may be one of the saddest verses in scripture.
Samson did not fall in one day.
He fell through gradual compromise.
Little by little.
Boundary by boundary.
Agreement by agreement.
The enemy tells people:
• “You’re still in control.”
• “This isn’t serious.”
• “Everybody struggles with this.”
• “You can stop anytime.”
But bondage always deepens if left unaddressed.
Sin never remains manageable.
Romans 6:16 says:
“…his servants ye are to whom ye obey…”
Whatever you continually obey eventually gains influence over you.
But thank God there is still freedom in Jesus Christ.
John 8:36 says:
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
Jesus does not merely manage chains.
He breaks chains.
4. The Level of Torment
4. The Level of Torment
Scripture: Matthew 12:43-45
“When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest…”
Torment attacks the inner life of a person.
This level can involve:
• Extreme fear
• Panic
• Despair
• Mental harassment
• Self-hatred
• Constant intrusive thoughts
• Restlessness
• Spiritual exhaustion
• Suicidal oppression
Daniel 7:25 says the enemy seeks to:
“…wear out the saints…”
Hell attempts to exhaust believers emotionally, mentally, and spiritually until they lose the will to fight.
Torment often gains strength through:
• Isolation
• Secret sin
• Unforgiveness
• Trauma
• Occult involvement
• Persistent rebellion
• Unhealed wounds
This is why secrecy is dangerous.
Darkness grows in hidden places.
But scripture declares:
2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
A sound mind is part of the believer’s inheritance.
The enemy wants chaos in the mind because confusion weakens discernment.
But Jesus brings clarity, peace, and restoration.
5. The Level of Possession and Total Domination
5. The Level of Possession and Total Domination
Scripture: Mark 5:1-15
The man of Gadara represents one of the clearest biblical examples of severe demonic domination.
Notice the symptoms:
• Isolation
• Self-destruction
• Loss of identity
• Violence
• Torment
• Nakedness
• Dwelling among tombs
• Supernatural manifestations
This man was completely overwhelmed by darkness.
Yet one encounter with Jesus changed everything.
Mark 5:7 says:
“What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God?”
Hell recognizes authority even when people do not.
Notice this carefully:
The demons feared Jesus.
Jesus never feared them.
The power of Christ was absolute.
By the end of the story, the man was:
• Sitting
• Clothed
• In his right mind
That is the restoration power of Jesus Christ.
No addiction is stronger than Christ.
No torment is stronger than Christ.
No bondage is stronger than Christ.
No devil is stronger than Christ.
Colossians 1:16 reminds us that all powers were created by Him and remain subject to Him.
How Believers Resist Demonic Attack
How Believers Resist Demonic Attack
Scripture: James 4:7
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Notice the order:
• Submit to God
• Resist the devil
• The devil flees
Many want authority without surrender.
But authority flows from alignment with God.
Spiritual warfare is not theatrical performance.
It is spiritual positioning.
The believer’s weapons include:
• Prayer
• Fasting
• Worship
• Repentance
• Holiness
• The Word of God
• Discernment
• Fellowship
• Obedience
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 says:
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.”
Strongholds begin in the mind before they manifest in behavior.
This is why the enemy fights thoughts so aggressively.
The battlefield is often internal before it becomes external.
Application
Application
The church must recover spiritual discernment.
Some struggles are emotional.
Some struggles are physical.
Some struggles are circumstantial.
But some struggles are spiritual warfare.
At the same time, believers must avoid unhealthy obsession with darkness.
Our focus is not demons.
Our focus is Jesus Christ.
Colossians 2:15 declares:
“And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”
The cross was not weakness.
The cross was conquest.
The resurrection was not survival.
It was total victory.
Believers are not fighting for victory.
They are fighting from victory.
The enemy has power.
But Jesus has all power.
Closing Insight
Closing Insight
There are people sitting in churches carrying hidden warfare:
• Silent torment
• Oppression
• Fear
• Bondage
• Exhaustion
• Secret battles
Some have learned how to smile publicly while bleeding privately.
But God is exposing hidden warfare because He desires freedom, healing, and restoration.
The Lord is calling the church back to:
• Discernment
• Holiness
• Purity
• Authority
• Prayer
• Intimacy with Him
The church does not need more entertainment.
The church needs spiritual authority again.
Authority does not come from shouting louder.
Authority comes from walking closely with Jesus Christ.
The enemy wants exhaustion.
God wants transformation.
The enemy wants confusion.
God wants clarity.
The enemy wants isolation.
God wants restoration.
The enemy wants bondage.
Jesus still sets captives free.
