Week 8: “Two Kinds of Wisdom”
Text: James 3:13–18
Main Truth:The kind of wisdom we follow will determine the kind of life we live.
The kind of wisdom we follow will determine the kind of life we live.
Introduction
Introduction
Everyone wants wisdom.
People seek:
Advice
Direction
Understanding
Success
Guidance for life
But James now asks a deeper question:
Not simply:“Are you wise?”
“Are you wise?”
But:
“What kind of wisdom is guiding your life?”
“What kind of wisdom is guiding your life?”
Because not all wisdom comes from God.
Some wisdom is:
Earthly
Self-centered
Destructive
While godly wisdom is:
Pure
Peaceful
Humble
Christlike
And James says genuine faith produces heavenly wisdom.
James 3:13 (CSB)“Who among you is wise and understanding
“Who among you is wise and understanding? By his good conduct he should show that his works are done in the gentleness that comes from wisdom.”
“Who among you is wise and understanding? By his good conduct he should show that his works are done in the gentleness that comes from wisdom.”
James immediately teaches that wisdom is not merely something you know.
Wisdom is something you live.
I. Worldly Wisdom Produces Pride
I. Worldly Wisdom Produces Pride
(James 3:13–14)
“But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart…”
A. False Wisdom Is Rooted in Self
Worldly wisdom says:
Promote yourself
Protect yourself
Put yourself first
It thrives on:
Envy
Competition
Pride
Recognition
B. Pride Corrupts Relationships
“Bitter envy” destroys unity.
“Selfish ambition” seeks personal advancement at the expense of others.
This kind of wisdom creates:
Division
Jealousy
Conflict
C. True Wisdom Walks in Gentleness
James contrasts selfish ambition with:
Meekness
Humility
Gentle strength
Illustration
A tree overloaded with rotten fruit may still appear healthy from a distance.
But eventually the fruit reveals the condition of the tree.
Wisdom is revealed by the fruit it produces.
Application
Ask yourself:
Am I driven by humility or ego?
Do I rejoice when others succeed?
Is my wisdom making me more like Christ?
II. Worldly Wisdom Produces Problems
II. Worldly Wisdom Produces Problems
(James 3:15–16)
“Such wisdom does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.”
James uses shocking language because false wisdom is dangerous.
A. Earthly Wisdom Focuses Only on This Life
It values:
Pleasure
Success
Popularity
Power
Without regard for eternity.
B. Unspiritual Wisdom Ignores God
It operates by human reasoning alone.
It asks:
“What do I want?”instead of
instead of
“What does God desire?”
C. Demonic Wisdom Creates Chaos
James 3:16 (CSB)“For where there
“For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice.”
Selfishness always creates confusion.
Illustration
When every person in a family insists on getting their own way, conflict becomes unavoidable.
The same is true in churches, workplaces, and relationships.
Application
Where there is ongoing:
Drama
Division
Pride
Chaos
There is often worldly wisdom at work.
III. Godly Wisdom Produces Purity
III. Godly Wisdom Produces Purity
(James 3:17a)
“But the wisdom from above is first pure…”
James now describes wisdom from God.
And the first word is important:
Pure.
A. Godly Wisdom Pursues Holiness
It seeks:
Clean motives
Honest living
God-honoring choices
B. Godly Wisdom Rejects Sin
It does not compromise truth to gain approval.
It chooses holiness over popularity.
Illustration
Clean water refreshes.
Polluted water contaminates.
Godly wisdom purifies the life.
Application
Before asking:“Is this acceptable?”
“Is this acceptable?”
Ask:“Is this pure before God?”
“Is this pure before God?”
IV. Godly Wisdom Produces Peace
IV. Godly Wisdom Produces Peace
(James 3:17–18)
James gives a beautiful picture of heavenly wisdom.
It is:
Peace-loving
Gentle
Compliant
Full of mercy
Full of good fruits
Unwavering
Without pretense
A. Godly Wisdom Builds People Up
It promotes:
Reconciliation
Kindness
Mercy
Unity
B. Godly Wisdom Reflects the Character of Christ
Jesus was:
Truthful
Holy
Compassionate
Gentle
Merciful
C. Godly Wisdom Produces Righteous Fruit
James 3:18 (CSB)“And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who cultivate peace.”
“And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who cultivate peace.”
Peace becomes the soil where righteousness grows.
Illustration
A skilled farmer carefully prepares the soil to produce healthy crops.
Likewise, wise believers cultivate peace so spiritual fruit can grow.
Application
Ask:
Am I creating peace or conflict?
Do people experience grace when they interact with me?
Is my life producing righteous fruit?
Practical Applications
1. Examine the Source of Your Wisdom
Ask:
Is my thinking shaped more by culture or by Scripture?
Am I following God’s wisdom or worldly wisdom?
2. Pursue Humility Daily
Godly wisdom is never arrogant.
Choose:
Teachability
Gentleness
Servanthood
3. Become a Peacemaker
Refuse:
Gossip
Division
Selfish ambition
Seek unity wherever possible.
4. Saturate Your Mind with God’s Word
The more you fill your mind with Scripture, the more your decisions reflect heavenly wisdom.
the more your decisions reflect heavenly wisdom.
Conclusion
There are two kinds of wisdom.
One comes from the world. The other comes from God.
The other comes from God.
One produces:
Pride
Chaos
Conflict
The other produces:
Purity
Peace
Righteousness
And James says genuine faith chooses heavenly wisdom.
James 3:17 (CSB)“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving…”
“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving…”
Closing Illustration
Imagine standing at a fork in the road.
One path is crowded, loud, selfish, and chaotic.
The other path is narrow, peaceful, humble, and righteous.
Every day, wisdom determines which path we choose.
Final Challenge
What kind of wisdom is shaping your life right now?
The wisdom of the world…
Or the wisdom from above?
Invitation (Optional)
Invite believers to seek God’s wisdom over worldly thinking
Call for repentance where pride or selfish ambition exists
Invite unbelievers to trust Christ, the true source of wisdom
