Tension:
Sanctification. The generic meaning of sanctification is “the state of proper functioning.” To sanctify someone or something is to set that person or thing apart for the use intended by its designer. A pen is “sanctified” when used to write. Eyeglasses are “sanctified” when used to improve sight. In the theological sense, things are sanctified when they are used for the purpose God intends. A human being is sanctified, therefore, when he or she lives according to God’s design and purpose.
The Greek word translated “sanctification” (hagiasmos) means “holiness.” To sanctify, therefore, means “to make holy.” In one sense only God is holy (). God is separate, distinct, other. No human being or thing shares the holiness of God’s essential nature. There is one God. Yet Scripture speaks about holy things. Moreover, God calls human beings to be holy—as holy as he is holy (; ; ). Another word for a holy person is “saint” (hagios), meaning a sanctified one. The opposite of sanctified is “profane” ().
Sanctification (Holiness) gets a bad rap… We think that any attempt to work is to try and earn the salvation that we have been given. But this creates an impossible situation. Certainly we don’t mean to suggest that there is no difference between those who follow Christ and those who do not.
What in the world does it mean to be “Holy”? Aren’t we trying to avoid the idea of being “holier than thou”. If I told you that God’s will is to be holy like he is holy, how would that make you feel? Is that even possible? I thought that Salvation is not something that we earn, but something that is a gift. How does all of this work?
We have all seen this idea of Sanctification abused. We have seen it slip over into what we would call, “Legalism”. That is the idea of Christianity is all about the rules...
Don’t smoke, Don’t chew, don’t run with the girls that do!
Take it out of the world of religion for a moment...
Do you ever feel the temptation to try and measure up to someone else’s expectations? Have you ever altered your behavior to try and be someone you are not?
We all struggle with this a bit, don’t we?
My story of getting saved.... NO, NO, NO - miserable failure.
So how do we do this?

Truth is often found in the tension-

So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ? Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never! And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, “The two are united into one.” But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.
Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
This was not true for the early church. They were distinctly known for how they lived differently from the culture around them...

Sanctification is a re-ordering of your priorites -

1 Corinthinas 6:16-20
2. Sanctification is a process -
The goal is to become more and more like Jesus
Paul - Until Christ is formed in you...
3. Sanctification is our participation in Salvation-
last week we talked about ...
It’s a gift!
earning vs effort -
million dollars buried in your back yard.
---The early Church - This was not true for the early church. They were distinctly known for how they lived differently from the culture around them...
That’s how they were known… How should we be known?
Marriages that make it
Community where love wins over our racial and economic divides.
We approach our money differently, not in greed etc.
Our sexuality does not become an idol but we live soberly in this world as we follow Jesus.
To live like this is sanctification! It is to be set apart and HOLY - We have been called saints, by the Grace of God. Don’t apologize, say amen!
