1 peter 2:13 - 3:12

theses: we all are to submit, we are all given a role.

intro:

in Matthew 26:36–46 Jesus is in the garden of gethsemane. we see jesus praying as He is deeply greaves and prays “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” Jesus didn't want to die so He is praying for it to pass, but He submits to the father. Doing so allowing us to Be saved through Him. In Hebrews 5:7 “In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety.” , Hebrews 5:8 “Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.” I am bring this account up because it shows Jesus obedience and submission to God the Father. and this also shows Jesus had a role when He was here on earth in the flesh.

submission is taken as a bad thing in todays society. and tonight i want to go over what God says about submission and what it means and how we are to display submission to the government, in the work place with bosses, and with in the marriage relationship.

submission to government

1 Peter 2:13–17 “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God. Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.”

for the Lords sake. (why we should submit)

we are to submit to every human institution, may that be to a king or to governors.

we are to submit to any human creation that is put in place for a orderly society.

the establishment of government is for the punishment of evildoers

when someone brakes a law the government is the one that will set the punishment.

for speeding you get a ticket

rob, steal or damage another belongings. you get a fine and depending on the dagree posable jail time or prison time.

murder someone mutable years in prison

Without a structured system of justice and established consequences for harmful behavior (punishment), a society faces serious risk of descending into chaos, lawlessness, and instability.

praise of those who do right

when one obeys the laws will find they significantly reduces the risk of legal problems. now Government Overreach & Errors: or Complex Regulations in the government may acure. the point is if you follow the law by not stealing, not speeding and not murdering. you will have nothing to fear.

such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.

this goes back to 1 Peter 2:12 “Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.”

Being followers of God we will come across people who will do devious things. and others in the world see that and it becomes normal to them. but when they see someone not doing that which the world does it may just win over there person who witneses it.

some examples of this. could be going to a restraint and you order your meal and as your paying the restrant has some problems with the register. they say you can go and they will charge the card when they get it fixed. a few day later you notes the payment never came out. the people in the world may say well i got a free meal. but a Christian should go back and pay what is due because it is the right thing to do.

this can be in the same form as going to the groceries and you or the person at check out foregets to scan the items at the bottom of the cart. you walk out and get to your car to put things away and relisze you did not pay for that item. some may think cool and just drive off. as christens we go back and pay for that item.

the ones working or even someone near by hears and see you come back to pay for something may stick out to them and ask why not just leave with it, why not mention it. you can say im a christion and i do what is right. and that may lead to them being won over by you doing good.

I like what is said in v16 “Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God.”

we are lucky to be American and have the freedoms we do. those freedoms may be taken advantage of and abused to twist the law for ones own benefit.

we are not to treat it as such, but use it as bondslaves of God.

Romans 6:22 “But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.”

1 Corinthians 7:22 “For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is the Lord’s freedman; likewise he who was called while free, is Christ’s slave.”

becoming a Christian frees us from sin and satin. but now we are under a new master God and we are given Eternal Life when we become Christians and if we continue to serve Him.

v17 honor all people, love the brother hood, fear God, honor the king

another reason why we do Good and submit. because we fear the Lord. when brake a law we are also braking Gods law. for has commanded us to follow the laws of man.

going back to 1 peter 2:13,14 but also Romans 13:1 “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.” ,Romans 13:2 “Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.”

when we should not submission to government (when it is acceptable to not submit)

Daniel 3:16–18 “Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to give you an answer concerning this matter. “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. “But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.””

Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego tell the king they will not serve his gods and worship the golden image. Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego fully believe that there God will snach them from the furnace and if not then they rather die befor serving his gods.

Acts 4:18–20 “And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”” , Acts 5:29 “But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.”

peter and john are given a commanded to stop speaking and teaching in the name of Jesus. but they point out they rather serve and obey God than man. acts 5:29 “But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.”

if a law is against Gods laws then its acceptable to not follow it. but if the laws are not then they must be followed.

submission to masters ( Bosses and employe )

1 Peter 2:18–25 “Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable. For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly.

For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God. For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.”

being treated well vs being miss treated

I have had 5 other jobs before i becoming a youth minister. there were few jobs where I had a really good relationships with a boss and one where the boss was not so nice. it was really hard to work for him and over time I started to dread going in to work.

by the looks on all your faces im sure, im not the only one who knows this struggle. but the work was done and i did everything that was told to me as ridiculous i thought it was.

being treated well and having a boss recognize your hard work and notice the moments you went above and beyond. feels really good and it motivates you to keep working harder and you find enjoyment in the work.

but when the boss over works you never acknowledges anything. but just points out mistakes you have made, how you are falling behind. the job becomes nothing more than a job. you go get what you need to get done and get out. theres not enjoyment there is no excitement. just dread.

in v18 servants are to obey there master. no mater if they are good or bad.

we see that God is telling the servants to be submissive to the masters with all respect. not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable.

as hard as it may be to show up to work and show respect for a boss that is an authoritarian, micromanager that does not care about you only them selfs.

we are to show respect. and we see why in v20 and following. we are given some comparison examples. the first one being put as a question.

“For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience?”

there is no credit because we did wrong we receive the punishment for it and we endure it because we know what we did was wrong and we feel like we deserve the punishment. thats why we endure with patience.

“But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.”

when we do good and still face suffering. we become uneasy and find it difficult to have patience. because patients its self fells like a punishment. but in-fact we are to have patience.

having patience is one of the fruit of the spirit Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”

James 1:3–4 “knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

Proverbs 15:18 “A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, But the slow to anger calms a dispute.”

going with this Proverbs 14:29 “He who is slow to anger has great understanding, But he who is quick-tempered exalts folly.”

if you may see patience as a form of punishment reframe your thinking of patience as preparation.

think before responding to someone who has anger.

I found a social media Chanel that goes over how to publicly speak and how to handel difficult situations in conversations.

one video they were doing is how to correctly respond to someone who insulted you or said something that hurt you.

the first advice is to pause let there be time to where the person that said a mean thing is now having to chew on the words that came out of there mouth.

this also gives you time to reflect. not on the words said but on your self to not get angry but prepare your self to respond comely. and your response should be. “sorry what was that.” or “say that again.”

this is now causing the person who said something mean to say it again and mojority of the time they dont because you gave them time to think about what they said and they start to feel bad, so they dont want to say it again. now if they do say it again. calmly say thank you for that input now i know where we stand and move on. that person showed who they want to be with and be around and its not you so move on. surround your self with those that will respect you.

have a mindset of patience as preparation.

another reason we are to endure is that it does find favor with God

1 Peter 2:21–25 “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.”

we are called for a bigger purpose and to have arguments over silly things. Im connately reminded by my children when they get in there fights as a partent it is so silly and yet they take it so personal so serious so important. when it really is not important not serious and ya okay it may be personal but it is not the priority.

the priority is as Christians we are to behave like Christ and think like Christ. and that looks like v22-24

He committed no Sin

there was no Deceit found in His mouth

as He was being reviled meaning criticized, insulted, spoken to with strong , abusive disapproval. He never did it back.

while he suffered he uttered no threats

He only kept entrusting Himself to Him who Judges righteously.

that is how we are to behave.

the why to why would we do this. why would we show respect to a mean boss to a mean person. v24 because “Christ bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.”

that is why we suffer through working with a difficult boss. and how we should treat others that miss treat us.

we never know that mean boos or person seeing how we continually respond with love and respect even tho they treat you different may open there eyes and get them to then ask why. they may ask why do you behave in this way when i have been so mean. and you can say “By His wounds you were healed.” meaning by christ sufferings you were made a new, by christ suffering your sins are forgiven. for those reasons Christians suffer for what is right because christ suffered for righteousness.

submission to husbands

1 Peter 3:1–6 “In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.”

today many see submission as a bad thing. those who see it as a bad thing don’t recognize God has a reason for submission.

the reason is for there to be roles. we saw in submitting to government or body of authority. there role are to set the laws and hold accountable the civilians under that government and or body of authority. the civilians are to follow those laws. the servant and master, the servant is to show repeat and obey the master regardless of the master being good or bad. the master has a role in tasks and jobs need to be done and the servant has a role of fulfilling those jobs and tasks . The same way with a wife and husband.

the wife has a role in the house hold and the husband has a role in the house hold as well.

we see the role of the wife is to be submissive to the husband.

Now if a husband is disobedient to the word. this is the same as disobedient to the gospel. the wife is still to be submissive to her unbelieving husband that that action is what could win him over to the Lord.

note that with out a word being said, her actions her behavior is what can change a mind bring a husband to christ.

what great strength for a wife and one who is a mother to behave in this way as difficult as it is. all for the purpose of God and the sols of her family.

this should also show us men that we need to behave in the way also because as we are out in the world others could be won over by our behavior and not by words.

in v2 it mentions they husband observe her chaste meaning pure and holy and her respectful behavior is what captured the husbands attention and is what won him over to come to christ.

in the following verse 3-5 is given a few things wife's need to keep in mind.

“Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;”

this is not saying women can not have bradded hair, neckless, jewelry or dresses. but that theses things should not be the focus. the out word appearance will get attention but not the right type of attention. the thing that maters is the heart. the person who is gentle and quiet spirit. that is what is valuable to God.

a good example of this are the holy women.

yung ladies, daughters. there are holy women to look to. see how modest and well put together. they are truly great examples to follow.

we are given a example of a holy women to look to.

“just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear.”

if we can turn to Genesis 18 we see Abraham seeing three men and Abraham running out of his tent to bow befor them. Abraham then asks the Lord to sit under the tree while he gets some water and bread. the Lord does so and Abraham goes to his wife Sarah. Sarah prepares the bread cakes. while Abraham gathers the other things.

when everything was gathered Abraham gives it to the Lord and the Lord bless them with childbearing. Sarah hears this in the tent and v12 Genesis 18:12 “Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?””

she calls her husband lord, not with a capital L. but a lowercase l This is a demonstration of summation to Abraham.

overall Colossians 3:18 “Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.”

the role of the husband.

1 Peter 3:7 “You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.”

in the same way does not mean husbands be submissive to your wives. but to live together as it is put “in a understanding way.” and in doing so the husbands shows honor as treating here with curtesy and kindness.

we also see in Ephesians 5:25–29 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,”

I am blanking on who i heard this from but it was from one of the instructors at bear valley. they said this. where you get in those arguments about who loves who more you. one says i love you so so much and the other says i love you to the moon and back and the next person trys to top it. and the only way to end that arguments leaving it impossible for them to top. you say i love you just as christ loved the church.

i love this because it gets us to really think and see the love that christ has for the church and the church is all of us here. thats who the love is for.

as to the existent of christ love. He died because he Loved us so much. He knew it was the only way we could be saved from sin.

this is the same sacrificial love a man must have towards his wife.

the role of the husband it to protect and if it means to give up ones life for.

but a sacrifice is not only giving up ones life in order to save her. but sacrifice in ways like when money is tight you have a $20 in your pocket and your both hungry. the husband makes the sacrifice to not eat for a day so his wife can.

as the wife submits to the husband, the husband shows love, protections, provides, sacrifices, and shows her honor with curtesy and kindness. but most important “having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word” the husband is to sanctify and glorify his wife. we are to spiritually look after our wives and we are to keep our wives form things that are considered unclean and that unclean is the world. This is a Spiritual protection a husband do. and in doing so the husband glorify his wife just as christ glorify the Church. the truth for todays commentary on page284 had this to say about glory.

“Glory is a term used in reference to the church elsewhere in this letter, which carries the idea of splendor. the church has a glorious inheritance and the church brings glory to God. in v27, Glory adds to the description of the church as pure bride of Christ clothed in moral perfection.”

I am sure wives would prefer to have a husband that does all of theses things.

now husbands notice your wives want you and need to to fill theses roles.

and men who are not yet married take note on what will be required of you and see there are women who seek after God that need a man to step up and provide theses things.

again the world makes submission out to be a bad thing but we see God is putting it place to set roles. roles in forms of government, roles in forms of master and servent which is more so like worker and boss. and roles in a marriage between husband and wife.

submission to God

1 Peter 3:8–12 “To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. For, “The one who desires life, to love and see good days, Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit. “He must turn away from evil and do good; He must seek peace and pursue it. “For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, And His ears attend to their prayer, But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

I am not going to get to deep in this one as we will go over this in the next sermon. i just want to point out that wether we are submitting to someone who is a Christian or not. submission need yes it will be difficult submitting to one who is not a Christian as insults, mistreatment may take place. but we see we are to turn way from evil and do Good, seek peace and pursue it.

we are all to submit to God and doing so is to follow and obey what is commanded of us. is doing theses things easy. no but they are put in place for a purpose of peace and guidance.

many today twist submission in to something bad when it really is not.
