Big Story #51 - แสวงหาหมายสำคัญ

▾ Mt 12:38–42 jonah - I will be in the earth, they repented at preaching, they will judge you, greater than jonah, queen cam from far, wisdom, greater than solomon

luke changes the order of jonah and the queen, adds crowds, and has storms too

• 38 เวลานั้นมีบางคนในพวกธรรมาจารย์ และพวกฟาริสีมาทูลพระองค์ว่า "ท่านอาจารย์ เราอยากจะเห็นหมายสำคัญจากท่าน"

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”

▾ 39 พระองค์จึงตรัสตอบเขาทั้งหลายว่า "คนในยุคชั่วร้ายและไม่ซื่อสัตย์ต่อพระเจ้าแสวงหาหมายสำคัญ แต่จะไม่ประทานหมายสำคัญให้ เว้นไว้แต่หมายสำคัญของโยนาห์ผู้เผยพระวจนะ

39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

• They came, but they were testing, tempting

▾ Signs and wonders

▾ what is the point of them in the Bible?

• what are we talking about?

• OT Miracles

• Jesus did them

• apostles did them

• to get people’s attention and make them interested

• to make them think

• to cause people that are cynical see a glimpse of truth and shutup

• to show God’s power and plan

• they are not in competetiion with the Bible

▾ signs and wonders does not dilute the power of the gospel nor is there any inherent inconsistency or unavoidable conflict between wonders and the word. Still, there are those who appeal to Romans 1:16 and 1 Corinthians 1:18,22-23,

• not to support disbelief and greed, adultry, and evil - where you seek something other than him

• Signs pointing to Jesus (that they should have seen)

▾ But Jesus says it can become Evil and Adulturous

▾ First, lets go with adulterous

• "You're not really my husband; you don't really love me. Prove it. Give me some sign." If that's the way we demand a sign, then we are a wicked and adulterous generation.

• Like if you are a wife that leaves your husband, and when he

• Not an honest questioning

▾ Jesus says it is evil - how??

▾ wanting to see magic to justify your adultry

• money, idolatry,

• Ignoring what Jesus us saying and who he is

▾ You can come up with something to say when there IS or ISNt something to see

• If there is - you will say it is a lie

• if there isnt - you will say its nothing

• the false teachers will be able to do miracles with the express purpose of decienving people - even believers

• The devil does them too

• the counterfeit signs and wondersa are works of satan

▾ False Gospel

▾ false emphasis - it’s the Gospel that has power, not signs

• signs are supposed to point to the Gospel, not themselves, the preacher, or money, offerings, etc.

• You say, “I need a sign from God.” For most of you, “no, you don’t.” You know it’s true; you just resist it. The problem is not your head; it’s your heart.

• Your head invents reasons because your heart doesn’t want to believe.

▾ Seeking them - there is a right way and reason to seek God’s power

like the pharisees vs good. there is a big difference

listen like ninevah and the queen - he is greater

▾ good - wanting to see God work

• is it bad to want to see God work? no, of course not

▾ is it bad to want things to be clear? no

• what is bad is when things are clear, and you still resist

▾ SEEK THEM! but for real

• Do you come to God insistent on a miracle, being prompted by an unbelieving heart that demands he put on a show before you will obey him?

• Or do you come humbly, in prayer, with a desire to glorify God in the display of his power and an equal desire to minister his mercy and compassion and love to those in need? The former, God condemns. The latter, he commends.

• WHY are you seeking these things? if it is to satisfy the evil and adultry in your heart, repent

• seeking signs, seeking God, seeking God’s work

• wanting to see magic to justify your evil

• vs wanting to see magic as evidence of what God is going to do in the future to destroy the devil, restore us, and bring about his kindgom

• They are not the power of God unto salvation

40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

▾ 41 ชาวนีนะเวห์จะลุกขึ้นในวันพิพากษาพร้อมกับคนในยุคนี้ และกล่าวโทษพวกเขา เพราะว่าชาวนีนะเวห์กลับใจใหม่เพราะการประกาศของโยนาห์ และผู้ที่ใหญ่กว่าโยนาห์ก็อยู่ที่นี่

41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

▾ Jonah

• His story - God told him to GO to ninevah, preach, but he ran, a fish, but they repented

• How is it a sign about Jesus?

▾ Jesus’ Message was similar to Jonah’s

• Judgement is coming in 40 days

• That Jesus is there is a sign that Judgemnt is ALSO coming

▾ Jesus’ Message is Greater than Jonah’s

• Jonah had nothing about compassion, love, forgiveness

• Jn 3 16

• Ninevah had no sure hope that they would be spared if they repented

• The Gospel is that Jesus took our place

• He paid it all

▾ A greater than Jonah is here

• Jonah hated the Ninevites. He only went because God had forced him to.

• Jesus could not have been more different …

• Jonah ran from his assignment; Jesus ran toward it.

• Jonah came only because he had to; Jesus came because He wanted to.

Jonah sat outside the city and hoped for Nineveh’s destruction; Jesus stood outside Jerusalem and wept and pleaded for her salvation.

• The only reason Jonah delivered the message to Nineveh was to save his life, he knew if he didn’t God would kill him; Jesus delivered his message even though it cost him his life.

• Jonah was thrown overboard into the sea because of his sin; Jesus was cast into the sea of God’s wrath for ours.

• Jonah was taken down into the depths of darkness for 3 days because of his disobedience; Jesus was taken into darkness of death for 3 days for ours.

• Jonah was more upset about the death of a plant giving him shade than he was the destruction of children; Jesus gladly, Hebrews 12:2, endured the pain of the cross for the joy that was set before Him, the joy of making rebels into sons.

• Jonah showed up bearing only an announcement of condemnation; Jesus said (John 3:17), “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

• Resurrection - a SIGN

▾ we have a sign already in Jonah

• they repented

▾ the sign of jonah is the preaching of the word

42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

• they came from everywhere to hear the wisdom of solomon

▾ Conclusion

▾ Jesus was the Sign - the greater sign

• Your sign is Jesus - who he is

▾ you are skeptical

• I am too

• you should want proof, not

• meat, not questionable things

• you have seen people decieved

• the ressurection

▾ prophecy - all history is pointing to one person

• you have the deficit of being alive for only a few years of history, so you don’t see it all

• but its all there. it all happened just like he said

• all the signs and wonders are pointing to one person

• all history is pointing to one person

▾ you don’t want to be deceived by tricks and superstition

• small little things that have no significance

• the devil works like that

▾ you don’t want to be deceived by lack of supernatural things

• while there are things

• The fulfillment

▾ there were tons of signs in the OT

• That’s a very dramatic statement. Do you see what he’s saying? He is saying, “A greater than Jonah; I’m the ultimate Prophet. A greater than Aaron or Moses; I’m the ultimate Priest. A greater than Solomon; I’m the ultimate King.”

• “Solomon is about me. Solomon points to me. I’m the true Solomon. I’m the true Jonah. I’m the true David. I’m the real David. Even David wasn’t the real David. I’m the real David. Read about David and see what happens to him and how he lives, and you will be learning about me, because everything in the Bible, everything in the Scripture is about me. Everything.”

• there is no sign that is greater than the real Jesus

• Don’t be like the pharisees that were staring at the sign, and asking for another

▾ Are you going to be judged by Ninevah

• The problem is not in your head, but in your heart

• you know its true, but you resist

▸ The weakness of Signs and wonders

▸ Storms

▾ What about for the people who aren’t from charismatic backgrounds??

• it is a dangerous way to live your life always changing based on signs,

• find the truth and hold to it
