Shavuot - Numbers 28:26-31

Feast of Weeks, or Shavuot by examining Numbers 28 (you can turn there) we can also see primary descriptions given in Deuteronomy 16. And seeing what changed in Leviticus. Its called Pentecost in the NT (gr) because it was 49 days + 1.

“‘Of the three major feasts (cf. Deut. 16:1, 3, 6; Lev. 23:42–43), only the Feast of Weeks is not identified in the Old Testament with some prior occasion in Israel’s history that it commemorates. Jewish tradition, however, supplied such an occasion by relating it to the day Moses was given the Law of God on Mount Sinai.’” — The Bible Knowledge Commentary I truly do believe that this feast, as well as all others, points to Christ.

Numbers 28:26–31  “ ‘Also on the day of the firstfruits, when you bring a new grain offering to the Lord at your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work. 27 You shall present a burnt offering as a sweet aroma to the Lord: two young bulls, one ram, and seven lambs in their first year, 28 with their grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for each bull, two-tenths for the one ram, 29 and one-tenth for each of the seven lambs; 30 also one kid of the goats, to make atonement for you. 31 Be sure they are without blemish. You shall present them with their drink offerings, besides the regular burnt offering with its grain offering.”

Now, how do we interpret this? The scriptures give us no direct connection but it seems obvious there is.

Some say “The two loaves prefigured saved Jews and Gentiles. As the old nature remains in those who are born again, the “leaven” was needed in the loaves which represented these believers. Whenever the typical bread represented Christ it must be unleavened; whenever it typified his people it must be leavened” (A. W. Pink, The Prophetic Parables of Matthew Thirteen, p. 48). “Two loaves may typify the fellowship of God’s people” (F.W. Grant, Numerical Bible, vol. 1, p. 360)

For the Lord to command not just leaven but sin/peace, blood offerings and this change was permanent - Numbers 28:26–31. And as they sang of what Christ has done, his Spirit poured out.

Acts 2:1–4  “ When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (all these sacrfices and the waving had taken place and many from every nation and language were there) 2 And suddenly there came a sound (not wind, not anything but something that looked like tongues of fire hovering over them) from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Where do we see peoples tongues confused and see them sent out?

The following reads almost the same places mentioned in Gen 10 & 11 (names have changed in some and not all listed)

Acts 2:8–12  “ And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”” hmmmm….

Where do we read the Spirit hovering? Gen 1:2b — …”And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Then God spoke light. The very beginning act of creation is culminated here in the birth of the church.

Adam the first man, then we are a 2 Corinthians 5:17  “ Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” The law, is fulfilled in Christ and we are made new - 2 Corinthians 5:17  “ Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

He also touched on this in 1 Corinthians 15:20–22  “ But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”

So we see, bread with leaven? Surrounded by blood, offered to God. We are living sacrifices, given as images of Christ. Covered in the blood of the lamb, who took away the sin of the world, who took our sin. And threw it into the sea. Where these loaves, filled with leaven, could be brought as sacrifices to Him, made perfect by the blood. Christ is the Manna and the Bread. THE bread of life - John 6:35  “ And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” He who had no sin, took on sin for us. Trust him and partake today.
