“The Helper Has Come”
Today were going to wrap up our series that the “Holy Spirit Has Come”. The Great Holy Spirit was given to us, after Jesus left, as our Helper until Jesus return’s.
John 16:7 (NKJV) 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
The Holy Spirit was given to the church on the day of Pentecost, which was last week,May 24. We call this the birthday of the Church.
This was the day that we remember the moment the Holy Spirit was first poured out upon the Church.
Pentecost reminds us that Christianity was never meant to be lived in our own strength.
Jesus promised, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8 NKJV), and that promise is still for us — right now.
What began in the Upper Room didn’t end there! The same Holy Spirit who empowered the early church believers is still empowering believers today, to live victoriously, to walk in wisdom, and to fulfill the call of God on our lives.
The early church was instructed to wait for the the Holy Spirit arrival.
Acts 1:4–8 (NKJV) 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
So we see that Jesus was pretty firm about waiting for the Holy Spirit to come, before they did anything.
And the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost.
Acts 2:1–4 (NKJV) 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The arrival of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost signified the transition from the old worship system to its fulfillment, completing the promises, or from the O.T. to the N.T.
For us, Pentecost has become a time to celebrate God’s bestowal of the Holy Spirit gift.
Jesus also brought this out very clear at the feast of Tabernacles that He went to.
John 7:37–39 (NKJV) 37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
OK, let’s go back to:
The Amplified Bible brings out who and what the Holy Spirit is and will be doing here.
John 16:7 (AMP) 7 However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you].
Church Family, The Helper is More Than we Realize.
We see how the Amplified Bible unpacks what Jesus is saying about the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is not limited to just one role, He is everything we need, exactly when we need it.
When you’re hurting, He is your Comforter.
When you’re confused, He is your Counselor.
When you feel weak, He is your Strengthener.
When you feel alone, He is your Standby.
The Holy Spirit was not sent as a concept—but as a present, personal, powerful Helper in every area of our lives.
Again Jesus said:
John 16:7 (AMP)
“…it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away… the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby)… will come to you…”
Let’s look at some points and build this up.
#1: THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME BECAUSE JESUS LEFT
Jesus said, “It is to your advantage…”
Jesus didn’t say “it’s okay” that He leaves…
He said it’s better.
The Truth Is:
The presence of the Holy Spirit in us is greater than Jesus beside us.
That can be hard to take, but it’s from Jesus’s very mouth.
John 14:16–17 (AMP) 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever— 17 The Spirit of Truth, Whom the world cannot receive (welcome, take to its heart), because it does not see Him or know and recognize Him. But you know and recognize Him, for He lives with you [constantly] and will be in you.
#2: THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON, NOT A FORCE
John 16:13 (NKJV) 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
“…He will come to you…”
Not “it”… He
*You don’t have a spiritual tool, you have a divine relationship.
Look at some of the statement that the Bible brings out about the H.S.
1. He can be grieved.
Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV) 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
2. He leads
Romans 8:14–17 (NKJV) 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
He speaks
Acts 13:2–4 (NKJV) 2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.
* Electricity is a force, you use it.
The Holy Spirit is a Person, He walks with you, speaks to you, guides you.
Many believers try to use the Holy Spirit instead of getting to know Him.
Leviticus 6:13 (MSG) 13 Keep the fire burning on the Altar continuously. It must not go out.
#3: THE HOLY SPIRIT IS OUR COMFORTER
(Parakletos – one called alongside to help)
You ever notice, that He comes close in your lowest moments.
2 Corinthians 1:3–4 (NKJV) 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
When life hits hard, you don’t have to fall apart—you can lean in.

#4: THE HOLY SPIRIT IS OUR COUNSELOR
He gives direction and wisdom
We are never without guidance.
John 16:13 (NKJV) 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
He will guide us into all truth
Isaiah 30:21 (NKJV) 21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.
God through the Holy Spirit gives us the wisdom that we need.
James 1:5–8 (NKJV) 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Proverbs 20:5 (NKJV) 5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, But a man of understanding will draw it out.
GPS recalculating when you miss a turn.
You may mess up, but the Holy Spirit never loses direction.
Quote: “You don’t have to figure life out—you just have to follow the One who already has.”
Proverbs 20:27 (NKJV) 27 The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, Searching all the inner depths of his heart.
#5: THE HOLY SPIRIT IS OUR STRENGTHENER
There is Power for living, not just at church
Christianity was never meant to be lived in our own strength.
Acts 1:8 (NKJV) 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Holy Spirit Prayer: Ephesians 3:14–21 (NKJV) 14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Zechariah 4:6 (NKJV) 6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.
What’s easier, to push a car vs. turning the engine on.
Many believers are pushing what God intended to empower.
#6: THE HOLY SPIRIT IS OUR STANDBY & ADVOCATE
He is our Standby:
He is present, active, and working even when you don’t see it
We are never alone, never unsupported, never without help.
Romans 8:26–28 (NKJV) 26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
He is our Advocate
1 John 2:1 (NKJV) 1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
Hebrews 7:25 (NKJV) 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
He is like a legal advocate standing beside you in court, speaking on your behalf.
Church family, Even when you don’t know what to pray—the Holy Spirit is praying.
***“Church family, the Helper is not coming, The Helper has already come.”
So how can we respond to the Holy Spirit.
1. Acknowledge Him daily.
“Holy Spirit, I welcome You today.”
2. Depend on Him, not yourself.
Stop trying to carry what He was sent to help with.
3. Listen for His voice.
He speaks through the Word, inward witness, peace
4. Yield to Him.
Don’t just learn about Him, Let’s walk with Him
Sunday May 24 at 5pm, we are going to celebrate when the Spirit was poured out…
But today, I want to make sure He is welcomed in us.”
Some need to recognize Him
Some need to return to dependence on Him
Some need to receive the fullness of Him
“Church Family, that’s what Jesus was talking about in John 16:7.”
John 16:7 (NKJV) 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
The Helper doesn’t just help in theory, He shows up in reality.
When you’re weak He is your Strengthener.→
When your hurting He is your Helper.→
When something is broken He is your Restorer.→
