Romans 8:12–17 “So then, brothers and sisters, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, because if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.”
Key Line: “For all those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.” (v.14)

INTRODUCTION

The Tension of Guidance
Every believer faces moments where the path ahead is unclear. We know what it means to be saved, but we often wrestle with how to be led. Paul answers this tension in Romans 8: the Spirit does not merely visit us—He leads us.
Spirit‑led living is not mystical, emotional guesswork; it is the daily, practical outworking of our identity as God’s children.

I. The Call to Spirit‑Led Living

Romans 8:12–13 “So then, brothers and sisters, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, because if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
A. You don’t owe the flesh anything (v.12).
You’re flesh will continue to act like it still has ownership over you.
we are not obligated to the flesh…
You’re flesh may still speak but it has no LEGAL Authority over you.
Romans 6:14 “For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under the law but under grace.”
“to Live according to the flesh…”
More than having a bad moment. Its when you have settled into a pattern of life that governs you and not the Holy Spirit.
Not just flesh…human nature
Galatians 5:17 “For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don’t do what you want.”
B. We must take sin seriously (v.13).
because if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die.
Warning!!
Sin brings spiritual death. Outwardly look like a christian, but inwardly dull toward God.
Sin brings Relational Deadness. Marriages, friendships, families, churches…
Sin brings purpose death. Kills callings, sensitivity, vision, momentum.
Spirit‑led living begins with Spirit‑empowered dying.
C. We can only win by the Spirit.
There is a war that is going on inside you. Not because you are fake, but because you are being transformed.

II. The Identity of the Spirit‑Led Believer

Romans 8:14 “For all those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.”
A. The Spirit leads those who belong to God.
This means that the Holy Spirit becomes the guiding force in your life,
Doesn’t mean you won’t struggle, feel temptation or make mistakes.
It means the flesh is no longer your master.
Now the Holy Spirit guides your direction, convicts your heart, corrects your steps, empowers your obedience.
John 16:13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.”
B. Spirit-led living reveals spiritual identity.
The Spirit’s leading flows from relationship, not performance.
…are God’s sons…
The Spirit doesn’t not merely excite us.
He brings us into truth. He leads us out of deception. Out of bondage. Out of fleshly living and into the will of God.
C. Sonship gives us confidence to follow.
God’s Sons, speaks of belonging, inheritance, maturity and family relationship.
Galatians 4:6 “And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!”
God is not saying, “If you try hard enough, God will accept you and love you.
Those who belong to God are marked by the leadership of the Spirit.

III. The Inner Witness of the Spirit

Romans 8:15–16 “For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,
A. The Spirit breaks the mindset of slavery
A spirit of slavery is mindset and condition of someone who lives under fear, condemnation, and insecurity. “This is not what you received.”
Genesis 3:10 “And he said, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.””
Sin produces fear and fear produces hiding. But the Spirit of adoption brings us out of hiding and teaches us to cry “FATHER!”
B. The Spirit enables our identity as God’s children.
THIS IS THE HEART OF THE MESSAGE
Spirit of Adoption. - God has brought us into His family with full rights, full acceptance and full belonging.
Roman World - Adoption carried strong legal meaning. An adopted son was given a new family identity, a new status and inheritance rights. Old debts and identity no longer defined him.
When you came to christ God didn’t forgive you and leave you outside of the house. He brought you into the family.
1 John 3:1 “See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it didn’t know him.”
C. The Spirit gives us inner assurance.
ABBA - aramaic word for father. It carries warmth, closeness and personal relationship. It is not cold or distant. It is the language of a child who knows they have access to the heart of the father.
ABBA MEANS FATHER
The Holy Spirit doesn’t just lead in resisting sin, but gives us confidence to approach God.
The Holy SPirit teaches us to pray from confidence and not fear.
When Jesus taught the disciples to pray the first word he taught them was “FATHER” Pater
That is relationship.

IV. The Spirit Leads Us Into Our Inheritance

only mentioning
Romans 8:14 - those led by the Spirit and sons of God.
Romans 8:15 - We didn’t receive a spirit of slavery, but a Spirit of Adoption.
Romans 8:16 - The Spirit testifies that we are God’s children.
Romans 8:17 “and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.”
A. Sonship gives us an inheritance.
Heirs - An heir is someone who receives an inheritance because of family relationship. Heirs don’t earn their way into the family. You are an heir because you belong.
B. Being united with Christ makes us coheirs.
C. Suffering with Christ leads us to Glory with Christ.
The Spirit does not only lead us into blessing but into becoming.

V. How to be led by the Spirit.

Stay consistently in God’s Word. Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” If you ignore the word you will struggle to discern the Spirit.
Develop a daily prayer life. Isaiah 30:21 “and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.” You develop your Spiritual ears and eyes the more you spend time in God’s presence.
Obey quickly when the Spirit Convicts or leads The Holy Spirit’s guidance becomes more clear the more you obey.
Crucify the flesh daily.
Being led by the Spirit requires daily surrender.

CONCLUSION — The Spirit Leads Us From the Inside Out

The Spirit leads us not by force but by formation.
Not by pressure but by presence.
Not by fear but by family identity.
To be led by the Spirit is to live as God’s children—guided, assured, transformed, and empowered.
