Text: 1 Peter 1:10–12 “Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.”
Theme: A godly man must know where his strength truly comes from.
Peter wrote to suffering believers and pointed them to the prophets, who searched diligently for the truth of God’s salvation in Christ. He did not tell them to look inward for strength. He directed them upward to God’s revealed truth.
The problem is not manliness. The problem is manliness detached from God.
A biblical man is not less manly because he is gentle, serves others, controls his anger, or sacrifices for those he loves. He is stronger because his life is under God’s authority.
Supporting Verses
Confidence comes from God’s keeping power.
1 Peter 1:5 “Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” Psalm 27:1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Proverbs 3:25–26 “Be not afraid of sudden fear, Neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, And shall keep thy foot from being taken.”
Authority comes from God’s Word.
1 Peter 1:25 “But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” 2 Timothy 3:16–17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” Titus 2:15 “These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.”
Hope comes from the resurrection of Christ.
1 Peter 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” Romans 5:1–5 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Hebrews 6:18–19 “That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;”
Faith grows through hearing the Word of God.
Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 “(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)”
Peace comes through Christ.
Philippians 4:6–7 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on thee: Because he trusteth in thee.”
Patience is formed through tested faith.
1 Peter 1:6–7 “Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” James 1:2–4 “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” Romans 5:3–4 “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope:”
Many men build their lives on success, money, strength, intellect, position, or emotional toughness. These may help for a season, but they cannot sustain the soul.
True strength comes from God.
Be a man under God: strong enough to lead, humble enough to serve, disciplined enough to restrain yourself, courageous enough to stand for truth, and loving enough to sacrifice for others.
Hardship alone does not make a man strong. Hardship interpreted through God’s Word builds endurance, stability, perseverance, and obedience.
Challenge: What is feeding your confidence, authority, hope, faith, peace, and patience?
If the source is not God and His Word, it will eventually fail.
Closing Thought: A strong man is not a man who needs nothing. A strong man is a man who knows where to go when he has nothing left.
