Intro: Start with standing out game
Lesson: Congratulation's as you can see we only have just a few of us still standing. I want you guys to look around at everyone who is sitting and staring at you. How does it feel to be the only ones left standing. Maybe…. a little different? A little like your standing out? You guys can go ahead and be seated. In our story today, three young men had to make a choice to stand out to be different from everyone around them. And when they did, something amazing happened. Has anyone heard the story about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
Lesson
Our story start with the king of Babylon who ruled from 605 BC to 562 BC, He became the king at just age 25. His name was King Nebuchadnezzar and he built an enormous golden statue and ordered everyone in his kingdom to bow down and worship it whenever music played. But three young Jewish men Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused. They knew that worshiping the statue would mean turning their backs on God, and they couldn’t do that.
When the king heard they wouldn’t obey, he gave them a second chance. He said, “If you don’t bow down, I’ll throw you into a furnace so hot it will burn you alive.” But the three friends stood firm. They told the king, “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace... But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” (Dan 3:16–18) They were saying: even if God doesn’t save us, we’re still not going to disobey Him.
The king was so angry that he ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than normal. The soldiers threw the three friends into the flames—and the fire was so hot it killed the soldiers! But something incredible happened inside that furnace.
The king was shocked and jumped up. He asked his advisors, “Didn’t we throw three men into the fire?” They said yes. Then the king said, “But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.” (Dan 3:24–25) God Himself walked into that furnace with them!
The king called the three friends out of the fire. They walked out without a single burn mark not even the smell of smoke on their clothes. The king was amazed and realized that the God of these three young men was far more powerful than he was. He made a new law protecting anyone who spoke against their God.
What This Means for You
When you stand up for what’s right, even when you’re scared and alone, God stands with you just like He stood with those three friends in the fire. Remember in our game when some of you were standing and others were sitting? That’s exactly what happened to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Everyone else in the kingdom bowed down to the golden statue, but these three friends stayed sitting they stood out. It felt lonely, didn’t it? But here’s the amazing part: God was right there with them because they chose to be different.
Standing out for God happens in your life too. Maybe your friends want to cheat on a test, but you know that’s wrong so you don’t. You’re standing alone, just like those three friends. Or maybe everyone’s being mean to a kid at recess, but you decide to be kind instead. You’re the only one. That feels scary, doesn’t it? But God is with you in that moment, just like He was in the furnace.
Sometimes standing out means telling the truth when lying would be easier. It means saying “no” to something fun because you know it’s wrong. It means being kind when everyone else is being mean. When you do those things, you’re not actually alone God is standing right there with you, just like He stood with those three young men in the fire.
The three friends didn’t know if God would save them from the furnace. But they obeyed Him anyway because they knew something more important than being safe: they knew that staying true to God mattered more than anything else. And when they stood firm, God showed up in a way they never expected.
When you stand out for what’s right—even when you’re scared, even when you’re the only one doing it God is there. He sees you. He’s proud of you. And He promises to never leave you, just like He never left those three friends in the fire.
