Be Seen: Judgment
Matthew 7:1-6
Have you heard people say, '"This world would be better if people just didn't judge?"
A society without Judging
Murder- Who am I to say you are wrong
School shootings could be normal.
Child Abuse- We all have our own way to deal with children.
Drugs- They are yours if you want them.
Marriage- Marry whoever or whatever you want.
Yet many times are judgment is hypocritical and not helpful.
Jesus did not come to earth to condemn because we were already condemned.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Yet,
judgment is coming.
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
How does Jesus ask those in his kingdom to judge?
1 “Judge not, that you be not judged.
2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.
3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?
5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.
SET UP
Judging is not forbidden.
16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?
Jesus is telling them they cannot judge like the Pharisees who were hypocrites.
Judging must come with caution.
3 Cautions Concerning Judging
3 Cautions Concerning Judging
1. How Are You Judging? (1-2)
1. How Are You Judging? (1-2)
1 “Judge not, that you be not judged.
2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.
What Standard Are You Using?
is it the same standard you use to judge yourself?
Hypocritical judgment is what is forbidden.
Unfair expectations on others.
Pharisees- placed unfair expectations on followers.
They were not able to keep them themselves.
Wrong to expect more from others than self.
"measure"= scales to measure grain.
38 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
ILL- Scales used to weigh vegetables at Walmart.
ILL-- Grocery store-- what if you bought a 10 lb bag of potatoes for 15 lb price?
2. When Are You Judging? (3-5)
2. When Are You Judging? (3-5)
Judge yourself first.
It is not wrong to help a brother with their speck.
It is wrong to not deal with your own failures first.
3 Truths About Our Sin
3 Truths About Our Sin
A. Our Sin Blinds
A. Our Sin Blinds
We cannot see correctly.
We are not any help to those in bondage of sin.
ILL-- Glasses- me without my contacts.
B. Our Sin Hardens
B. Our Sin Hardens
Sin hardens not only our heart toward God but it hardens other people's heart toward you.
Those we are helping see our sins and refuse to listen.
Not going to trust us to help them if we cannot help self.
ILL-- Surgeon walking in with a cane with a red tip.
C. Our Sin Helps
C. Our Sin Helps
It is possible for Christians to see clearly to help others.
When we have overcome it is an encouragement for others.
But we must HELP not CONDEMN
ILL-- Condemnation= sending the person with a speck to a deserted island so it cannot be seen by anyone.
That is no help to that person.
3. Who Are You Judging? (6)
3. Who Are You Judging? (6)
6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.
vs 5- "of your brother's eye"-- its a clue for verse 6.
Our judgment is only allowed when we can help.- those who will receive it. Probably for only believers.- For our brothers and sisters in Christ.
The lost will not care what you say.
They will tear you to pieces.
The lost are doing what is expected- sinning.
The lost do not need our condemnation- they need our Savior.
This is where Christians get a bad reputation.
Instead of loving the sinner- we judge them.
Love them as someone who needs the truth.
ILL- Imagine going to a bar and finding the roughest one there.
Go up to them say, "You shouldn't talk like that."
APP
It is our obligation to love a brother to repentance.
It is our obligation to tell the lost about Jesus.
CONCLUSION
Do you judge yourself?
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
Are you ready to stand before the Perfect Judge?
Are you ready to stand before the Perfect Judge?
He is holy and will judge us based on His holiness.
We can only be holy through the blood of Jesus.
