Church family,
Today is a day of great joy.
We gather to witness the baptism of these believers who have professed faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Before we baptize them, let us remember what baptism is
and what baptism is not.
Baptism does not save.
The water has no power to wash away sin.
Only the blood of Jesus Christ can cleanse a sinner.
We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Baptism is the God-ordained sign of union with Christ.
It is also the covenant sign Christ has given to His New Covenant people.
Under the Old Covenant,
God gave circumcision as the sign of belonging to the covenant community.
Under the New Covenant,
Christ has given baptism as the sign that identifies those who belong to Him through faith.
Baptism does not create that relationship,
but it testifies to it.
It is the visible declaration that we have been united to Christ and numbered among His people.
It is the public declaration that a believer has turned from sin and trusted in Jesus as Lord and Savior.
As the Apostle Paul writes:
"Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:3–4)
When a believer goes beneath the water,
it pictures union with Christ in His death and burial.
When they are raised from the water,
it pictures union with Christ in His resurrection and the new life that He gives.
Baptism does not make someone a disciple.
Rather, it is the testimony that Christ has already made them His disciple.
Today these believers publicly identify with Jesus Christ
before His church
and before the world,
declaring that their hope is not in themselves,
but in the crucified, risen, and reigning Savior.
Let us rejoice together in the grace of God, who still calls sinners to Himself and builds His church through the saving work of His Son.
I would like to invite the other Elders to come forward and lay hands on and pray for these young believers.
I would like to invite .... to come join me in the water
