The Faith of Moses’ Momma

the author of Hebrews begins his introduction to all of these men and women by these words By Faith

Because of their trust in God

by their confidence that God will do what He says he will do

V 19 raise from the dead

V 21 Jacob knew he was a pilgrim in Egypt. as a wanderer he leaned on his staff

he made Joseph’s boys his boys and part of the 12 tribes of Israel

Genesis 46:3–4 LSB

And He said, “I am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there. “I Myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I Myself will also bring you up again; and Joseph will close your eyes with his hand.”

V 22 Joseph —of all the things that Joseph had done the author tells of the time when Joseph was close to dying.

he was looking forward to being in the land of promise

He knew that God had promised the Israelites would return

Now at the time of Moses birth there was an edict from Pharaoh to his slaves the Israelites that all of the baby boys be thrown into the nile

The Birth

Exodus 2:1–2 LSB

And a man from the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as a wife. And the woman conceived and bore a son; and she saw that he was beautiful, so she hid him for three months.

this was the 3rd child Aaron and Miriam were before Moses

This child was different the Bible says he was beautiful

there was something different about Moses.

This child was a child to be used by God

V 23 by faith his parents hid this child

God supernaturally protected this child

from birth this child was to do a mission

and some how the parents knew

so until he was to old to hide he was kept

then he was put into an ark of reeds with pitch inside and out

Exodus 2:3–4 LSB

But she could not hide him any longer. So she took for him an ark of papyrus reeds and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and put it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him.

so into the nile he goes protected in the basket

Exodus 2:5–6 LSB

And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her young women walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the ark among the reeds and sent her maidservant, and she took it to her. Then she opened it and saw the child. And behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

so in God’s providence

Divine providence describes God’s preservation, care, and governance of all creation to accomplish the purposes for which He created them. More specifically, it refers to God’s superintending and ordering of all events through natural means so as to infallibly work out His purposes in history

God orchestrates the universe to accomplish His will, and purpose.

So in God’s providence the daughter of Pharaoh saw the baby and had compassion on it

she should have done what her father had said to do throw him in and drown him

but God gave her compassion but this was a baby and she could not take care of a baby so God arranged for momma to be paid for taking care of little Moses

Exodus 2:7–10 LSB

Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?” And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she named him Moses and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

Pharaoh was afraid of the Israelites rising up and taking over and he himself helped raise the man who would lead this uprising

but Pharaoh was doing God’s plan

Proverbs 21:1 LSB

The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of Yahweh; He turns it wherever He pleases.

Deuteronomy 2:30 LSB

“But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass through his land, for Yahweh your God stiffened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to give him over into your hand, as he is today.

God’s providence directs people to do His will

and Moses was set apart by God for this mission

Jeremiah 1:5 LSB

“Before I formed you in the innermost parts I knew you, And before you came out from the womb I set you apart; I have given you as a prophet to the nations.”

it was not by circumstances that Moses became this great leader

but it is really not Moses that we are concentrating on it’s his momma

Momma’s Faith

V 23

By faith Moses’ ma

she knew somehow that this child would be a special person to God

so she defied the kings order knowing that God had a special use for this child

she was going to trust in God

she was not going to do what others were doing

she was not going to do the “safe thing”

to her the safe thing was to put her trust into the almighty’s hands

she kept the child for 3 months, put him in a basket early in the morning

by lunch time she was being paid and protected by the daughter of Pharaoh

my brother Matt moved to South Dakota with his family to go to Bible school

did not know how he was going to support his family or pay for school

he told me that this was something he had to do

God had laid this on his heart to do

when he got there he settled his family and started doing a little carpentry when a terrible hailstorm hit and caused major roof damage to many houses in his area. he then had all the work that he could handle

before all of the houses were fixed he had a truck and a crew working for him

This woman did what she did by faith.

but it wasn’t for another 80 years later that God used Moses

we just don’t know what our being faithful to our calling will accomplish long after we are gone

when we trust in our Lord and by faith obey his commands
