Thank you to the...
NTD Leadership team.
· It’s an honor to share with you today
First I want to say that I’m not speaking as an expert but another fellow pastor in the trenches sharing what I have learned along the way from mentors and Gods word.
Transition: All right... I’m going to talk about Leadership Development. So... I have titled todays workshop...
Key Dimensions of Leadership Development
STATEMENT: Most pastors/Leaders don’t struggle with vision, they struggle with developing leaders who can own it.
Hopefully today...
You can discover the hidden gaps... that quietly stall your teams growth... and learn some systems to help build the trust, confidence, influence, and wisdom your team needs... to carry the vision.
Here’s what’s at stake...
If we miss this... as Leaders… you’ll end up carrying the load alone, slowly burning out, dragging along a team that can’t lead; not because they don’t have potential, but becuase they have NOT been lead.
We’ve all preached Eph. 4... Leaders Exists to what? Build the saints for the work of the ministry.”
Let me say it like this...
Biblical Leaders exist to EQUIP not PREFORM
Far too often we get stuck preforming all the work of the ministry vs building the saints to do it.
What I am going to talk about today is simple... but NOT easy to do; otherwise everyone would be doing it.
Every Missionary, bi-vocational Pastor, can do this.
We need systems in these four dimensions or they simply won’t happen:
Leadership development will not happen by CHANCE: only through COMMITTMENT.
These are in no particular order... The 1st Dimension of Leadership Development is...
The CONNECTING dimension (Jn. 15:15)
Personal relationship unlocks a level of leadership in people.
The disciples we’re not hirelings..., he knew them, their families... what made them happy, and what broke their heart.
Jn. 15:15 Jesus says of his followers...
“I no longer call you servants, but I call you friend.”
· Some Pastor’s refuse friendship with their staff.
· Here is the point...
o If we’re going to lead like Jesus... we must develop this leadership dimension.
In your notes:
This dimension builds TRUST.
· People struggle to trust leaders they don't know.
· It's not that they distrust you. They just don't know you yet and trust requires time.
Ever leader needs Trust from their team... to accomplish the vision.
· The relational dimension... does that.
Here is a...
Practical Tip: Develop a rhythm of connecting.
· Connecting about personal life... not just work.
· Set up regular 1:1 with those who directly report to you.
· Between connecting with new people and members... I typically set up lunches with our board, staff and their family at least once a year for nothing but personal connection.
o 5 board members, 7 staff... That works out to about one lunch a month throughout the year.
· YES it WILL cost... more money... and time...
· Just get creative and connect.
Here is what I can promise you...
· If you skip this... it will cost you much more... than two 20 dollar bills and a little extra time....
IN YOUR NOTES...
When you take time for a connection you are saying, I want you to THRIVE.
· I care about WALK... than your WORK...
· People who cared feel cared for will thrive personally... and professionally.
· This builds the trust... required to run with the vision.
Here is a question for you to consider?
Question: When is the last time I spend one on one time with key leaders?
How can I add regular relational connections as a part of my leadership development skills?
Here is a resource that might help... this is listed at the bottom of the notes.

We’re talking about
Key Dimensions of Leadership Development
Leadership is NOT one dimensional...
The next dimension of leadership development is... IN YOUR NOTES...
The COLLABRATINGdimension (Ecc. 4:9)
· Top-down leadership is fast and clean but it doesn't develop leaders.
o It's requires a slow cooker not a microwave.
o Collaboration requires maturity and patience, someone who is willing to play the long game.
o It allows people to work with you, learn from you, see how you role and figure out how to compliment you with their strengths.
Scripture says...
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor”
· I wonder what kind of return you would have on your work... if you slowed down to collaborate?
· Sure, it’s starts slow in the beginning... But as your team masters it, ministry expands further faster.
Here is the reality...
· You can't see what everyone else sees, these are called blind spots... and A good team helps covers your blind spots.
Why is this dimension iso important?
IN YOUR NOTES...because...
This dimension builds CONFIDENCE.
· As you lean into team strengths and minimize the weaknesses... your team builds confidence.
· A winning team, is a Confidence team.
Story:
In my 20’s I plan events alone. They were stressful and unorganized.
· I brought that stress to the team, and gave them my master plan, I’m sure you know how that turned out.
· When I started COLABORATING with the team... I was amazed at what God could do through a team that worked together.
· A few years ago we began starting out meetings with this prayer, “God, I have no idea what You're about to show us as we work together... but I cannot wait to be surprised by what You do through us.”
In Your notes...
When you take time for collaboration you are saying, “I want you to SPEAK-UP”
· I care about what you think
· I value your voice
Pastor... ministry leaders...
There is VALUE in the VOICES around you.
You might want to write this down...
· Listen for HISvoice in THEIR VOICE.
o If the Holy Spirit is in us... Let’s listen for his voice in those around us.
Here is a question for you to consider?
QUESTION: How am I COLABRATING with the team around me?
· Do I consider others opinions when making decisions?
· Do I give them permission to speak into things?
· ***If you really want to know the truth as your team this question... team members... as your teams this question.
QUESTION: What’s one thing I can do to collaborate more often as a part of my leadership development system?
***How can you turn this into a system of operation.
Here is a resource that might help... this is listed at the bottom of the notes.

We’re talking about....
Four Dimensions of Leadership Development
The next dimension of leadership development is... IN YOUR NOTES
The COMMISSIONINGdimension (Matt. 28:19)
Yea... Jesus could have expanded his kingdom any way he wanted... but he did it by commissioning... leaders...
I don’t need to preach Matt 28:19 to you...
The point is simple... He empowered... and released leaders.
This is why as leaders we should...
“Lead with an open hand”
· Don’t hoard all the opportunities... they give them away...
· We should be releasing authority not just tasks.
Your best growth probably happened when someone empowered you
· Most of you we’re NOT qualified for your first position...
· Someone took a chance on you...
· Let’s do the same for others.
Why is this dimension is important?
IN YOUR NOTES...
This dimension builds INFLUANCE.
· People notice when you release authority.
· You are telling people... I trust them to lead...
· Leaders need influential opportunities.
· 10 influential leaders accomplish more than ONE person calling all the shots...
o When everyone lean’s on you... in minimizes the effectiveness of your team... and increases your weight. In some senses it actually undermines their God given authority and calling that God has entrusted you to equip and release.
If you're a leader and you're feeling crushed... Perhaps we haven't released enough influence.
Here is a...
Practical Tip for commissioning leaders and giving things away...
It’s really simple...
If someone else can do it... let it go.
Use the
80/20 principal
· This principal says this, “80% of your best impact comes from 20% of what you do.
o In other words most leaders waist time 80% of the time doing things that don’t drive the organization forward.
· Find the top 20% and release the rest.
This is NOT so you can work less...
· So you can pour into what matters most.
o Better and clearer... Vision Casting
o Better Message Content and delivery
o Etc..
In Your notes...
When you take time to commission.... you are saying, “I want you to SHINE”.
· People need to know your willing to share the limelight....
· Most of you would NOT stay in a position where there is no advancement.
· Why would we expect our staff, or volunteer do it?
Here is a question for you to consider?
Question: What is something in your 80 % that you could release?
· When was the last time you gave something away... and communicated to your team.. I WANT YOU TO SHINE?
There’s a resource at the end of you’re notes to help you lock into this

We’re talking about....
The Dimensions of Leadership Development
The last and final dimension of leadership development is...
The CRITIQUINGdimension
· Critique is essential to development
o I didn’t say criticize... I said critique... there is a difference.
Criticism TARE-DOWN; while critique BUILDS-UP.
I love what proverbs say’s about offering advise...
Proverbs 19:20
“Listen to ADVICE and ACCEPT discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.”
· Advise is a part of the feedback loop that we all need to grow.
Why is this dimension iso important?
IN YOUR NOTES... because
This dimension builds WISDOM.
· Receiving critique and feedback, is linked to gaining wisdom.
· Some wisdom only comes through feedback, that can not be found else ware.
Let me offer a practical tip...
Practical Tips: Create FEEDBACK LOOPS.
· What is a feedback loop?
o It’s a system for receiving giving and receiving critique.
· Notice I said loops... Leaders need feedback as much as our teams do.
Here are 2: For example create feedback loops with...
Those you OVERSEE.
o We do this in 1:1 meetings.
We close every one of these meetings with...
· Loops 1 - Is there anything bugging you?
o We teach them to lay it all out... leave nothing out.
o You cannot fix what you don't know about
· Loops 2 Always be ready to receive a critique.
o It is our job to notice and bring constructive feedback.
o Don’t nitpick the little your annoyances that's criticism not critique.
Give them feedback regarding... how they are...
o Preforming in their job
o Aligning with culture
o Equipping those around them.
§ Set the bar for them, make it clear.
§ Put it in WRITING – so they know where the goal post is.
2nd...
Create a feedback loop for...
· Events you OVERSEE.
§ Almost event we do is evaluated... and critique is offered in every area.
· We gather Metrics
· And ask...
o What was right
o What was wrong
o What was missing
o What was confusing
o Ideas for next time
This is one of our best tools for development tools... for the team.
In Your notes...
When you take time to critique... you are saying, “I want us to WIN”
· When your team wins... you win...
· When you fail... we all fail.
Here is a question for you to consider?
Question: What feedback loops do you need to add?

Book on Evaluations:6 Hats
In Closing...
Closing
· Miss any of these 4 dimensions and we’ll stunt the growth of our teams.
· Implement these systems and your develop leaders who are...
o Trustworthy, Confident, Influential and full of Wisdom.
Anyone in the room want leaders like that?
IF you have time add:
· How many of you think we aught to take Eph 4 more seriously that says, “Equip the saints for the work of the ministry?
· Friends, The saints are to do the work of the ministry... they should be able to MINISTER to one another.
o They should know how to
§ Care for the flock.
§ Visit them at the hospital.
§ Pray with them. Counsel them to some extent.
§ Lead them to the word for advice.
o Sometimes our challenge is that the flock does not receive ministry from itself - all because we have taught them that this real-ministry is done by Pastors....
§ This is not on the sheep – its on the leaders for NOT equipping the saints for the work of the ministry...
§ Let me say it a little stronger..
· We have we have usurped the authority that God has given them to minister to the people.
· So now when someone needs prayer, when someone needs a hospital visit, when someone needs wisdom or understanding of scripture they call us to do it.This should not be.
I hope this was helpful for you today...
Lets turn to our tables and take a moment to process what God is saying to us and learn from one another.
There are two questions on the bottom of your notes.
Table Questions
****SHAWN READ THEM:
What’s one thing that stuck out to you today that you would like to implement?
What’s one thing you do to develop leaders that we might not have discussed today that you think will be helpful for your table?
We have about 15min... if each of you takes a minute or so... to answer one of the questions below...
you can head back to the sanctuary for the next session.
