Big Idea
A life of faith leaves behind a testimony of God's faithfulness, sovereignty, and covenant promises.
God Made Promises to Me (v1-7)
God Made Promises to Me (v1-7)
Jacob begins with God's covenant, not his accomplishments.
God appeared to Jacob at Bethel.
God promised offspring, nationhood, and land.
Jacob is convinced God's promises remain true despite being in Egypt.
Faith is rooted in God's Word, not present circumstances.
Application:
The greatest thing we can pass on is confidence in God's promises.
God Has Been Faithful to Me (v8-16)
God Has Been Faithful to Me (v8-16)
Jacob reflects on a lifetime of God's care.
Adoption of Ephraim and Manasseh.
"The God who has been my shepherd all my life long."
"The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil."
Jacob's testimony is not that life was easy, but that God was faithful.
Three descriptions of God:
Three descriptions of God:
The God of the covenant (v. 15)
The Shepherd of His people (v. 15)
The Redeemer of His people (v. 16)
Application:
A mature believer's testimony becomes increasingly God-centered rather than self-centered.
God Is Sovereign Over Me (v17-20)
God Is Sovereign Over Me (v17-20)
Jacob intentionally blesses Ephraim over Manasseh.
Joseph thinks Jacob has made a mistake.
Jacob knows exactly what he is doing.
God's purposes are not controlled by human traditions.
Throughout Genesis:
Abel over Cain
Isaac over Ishmael
Jacob over Esau
Joseph over his brothers
Ephraim over Manasseh
God repeatedly demonstrates that salvation and blessing come by grace, not human status.
Application:
We must submit to God's ways even when they overturn our expectations.
God Will Continue After Me (v21-22)
God Will Continue After Me (v21-22)
Jacob's eyes are fixed on the future.
"God will be with you."
"God will bring you again to the land."
Jacob dies believing promises he will never see fulfilled in his lifetime.
This is the faith commended in Hebrews 11:21.
Jacob understands:
God's plan began before him.
God's plan will continue after him.
God is faithful across generations.
Application:
Faithful believers live for a future they may never personally see.
Conclusion
Conclusion
At the end of his life, Jacob's testimony is not:
Look what I built.
Look what I accomplished.
Look what I overcame.
His testimony is:
God made promises to me.
God has been faithful to me.
God is sovereign over me.
God will continue after me.
That is the testimony of a life transformed by grace. The same God who shepherded Jacob ultimately sent the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, through whom all of God's covenant promises find their fulfillment.
