Worship through music is not performance. It is formation, declaration, and participation in God’s presence and mission.

Opening Song

“We gather to be formed in God’s presence so we can be sent into our community”

DECLARATION:

Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Our church family is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit, and we are missionaries.
After greeting prayer: “Lord, open our eyes this week to those who are curious about faith.”

THE TENSION

(Why This Matters - Name the struggle)
Throughout this series we’ve discovered:
Worship is surrender.
Worship forms us.
Worship unites us.
Worship sustains us in the valley.
Worship sends us on mission.
But today we ask a final question:
What is worship preparing us for?
The answer is simple: Worship today is rehearsal for eternity.
The songs we sing today are not the end of the story. They are preparation for the day when we will see Jesus face to face.
THE PROBLEM: Most people live as though this world is all there is.
We become consumed with:
temporary problems,
temporary successes,
temporary possessions,
temporary priorities.
As a result, we lose sight of eternity.
When eternity fades from view, worship becomes casual, optional, and self-focused.
BIG IDEA: Worship prepares us to live now in light of what we will do forever.

MY STORY

(Relatable Entry Point - vulnerable authenticity - emotional connection)
Remembering times when life felt consumed by immediate problems
The more I focus on eternity, the less controlled I become by temporary things.

THE SCRIPTURE

(Context, Characters, Read)
Revelation 22:3–5 “No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”
Notice the picture:
God’s people
God’s worship
God’s presence
God’s kingdom
This is where history is headed.

THE DISCOVERY

(What We See Unfolding — 3 Movements: What does this reveal about God? - What does this reveal about us? - What lie is being confronted?)

1. Worship Reminds Us Where History Is Going

The Bible does not end with chaos. It ends with Jesus reigning.
The story of Scripture is moving toward restoration: Acts 3:21 “whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.”
We often become consumed with temporary realities.
God is sovereignly bringing history toward His ultimate purpose.
Lie being confronted: “The future is uncertain and out of control.”
Truth: Jesus is leading history toward His eternal kingdom.

2. Worship Trains Our Hearts for God’s Presence

Revelation says: “They will see His face.”
The greatest promise of heaven is not streets of gold.
The greatest promise is God’s presence.
Worship teaches us to desire God Himself.
We often want God’s blessings more than God’s presence.
God’s ultimate desire is relationship with His people.
Lie being confronted: “Heaven is primarily about what we receive.”
Truth: Heaven is ultimately about being with God.

3. Worship Forms Eternal Priorities

What we worship shapes what we value.
If our focus remains on temporary things:
money,
comfort,
success,
status,
our hearts become anchored to a fading world.
But worship reorients us toward eternal things.
We easily drift toward temporary treasures.
God invites us to invest our lives in things that last forever.
Lie being confronted: “What matters most is what I can gain here.”
Truth: The things that matter most are eternal.

4. Worship Gives Meaning to Mission

Why do we share the Gospel?
Why do we develop missionaries?
Because Revelation shows us the future: A multitude from every nation worshiping Jesus. And we’re invited into the mission of brining every nation to the throne of God.
*Mission exists because worship does not yet.*
We often settle for comfortable Christianity.
God desires worship from every tribe, language, people, and nation.
Lie being confronted: “My faith is primarily about me.”
Truth: God’s plan has always included the nations.

5. Worship Begins Now What Will Continue Forever

“Now and not yet” or “Now and becoming”
One day:
faith becomes sight,
hope becomes reality,
suffering ends,
sin is gone,
Jesus is seen face to face.
But worship does not stop. Worship continues.
The worship gathering today can be a preview of eternity.
We often see worship as an event rather than our eternal purpose.
God created us for everlasting relationship with him.
Lie being confronted: “Worship is just something Christians do.”
Truth: Worship is what we were created for.

IDENTITY SHIFT

(Who does this reveal God to be? Who does this reveal us to be?)
Who God Is
God is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. He is bringing His people into eternal fellowship with Himself.
Who We Are
We are citizens of heaven being prepared for eternity. We are worshipers now and forever.

PRACTICE OBEDIENCE

(Next Steps - Application)

1. Lift Your Eyes Beyond Today

Ask: “Am I living for temporary things or eternal things?”

2. Prioritize God’s Presence

Spend time with God not merely for what He gives, but because of who He is.

3. Live on Mission

Help more people join the eternal worship gathering around God’s throne.

4. Hold Temporary Things Loosely

Success, possessions, and comfort will pass.
Jesus will remain.
ILLUSTRATION: The Wedding Rehearsal
Before a wedding, there is a rehearsal.
People practice:
where to stand,
where to walk,
what to expect.
The rehearsal is not the wedding.
But it prepares everyone for the day that is coming.
Every worship gathering is a rehearsal.
We are practicing:
surrender,
praise,
obedience,
mission,
delight in God’s presence.
Not because this is the destination.
Because the wedding day is coming.
***COMMUNION***
One day:
We will no longer worship by faith.
We will worship by sight.
We will see His face.
Until that day, every act of worship is preparing our hearts for eternity.
Because worship is more than a song. It is preparation for forever.
Communion is preparation and proclamation until that wedding day.

Worship Thru Music

Commissioning:

This week, build one relationship. Pray for one person far from God.
As you depart…Take one step toward discipling someone.
TALK IT OVER
What stands out to you most about Revelation 22:3–5?
How does eternity shape the way you live today?
Why is God’s presence the greatest promise of heaven?
What temporary things most easily distract you from eternal priorities?
How can worship help prepare us for eternity?
