Romans 11:33-36
Romans 11:33-36
Romans 11:33–35 is Paul's response of worship after contemplating God's sovereign plan in salvation—His dealings with both Jews and Gentiles throughout Romans 9–11. Paul does not end with an explanation of every mystery; he ends with adoration.
Romans 11:33
Romans 11:33
"O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!"
God's wisdom and knowledge are infinite. After tracing God's sovereign election, Israel's temporary hardening, and the salvation of the Gentiles, Paul is overwhelmed by the greatness of God's redemptive plan. God's purposes are far deeper than human understanding can fully grasp. His judgments are "unsearchable" and His ways are "past finding out."
Romans 11:34
Romans 11:34
"For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?"
Paul quotes Isaiah 40:13 “Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, Or being his counseller hath taught him?” to show that no creature can instruct God. Human beings often question God's purposes, but no one possesses the knowledge necessary to advise Him. God's decrees arise from His own perfect wisdom, not from consultation with men or angels.
Romans 11:35
Romans 11:35
"Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?"
This quotation from Job 41:11 “Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? Whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.” teaches that God owes no one anything. Salvation is entirely of grace. No sinner can place God in debt through merit, works, or religious achievement. Since everything belongs to God already, no one can claim a reward from Him as though God were obligated to repay them.
These verses as one of the greatest doxologies in Scripture. After presenting the doctrines of election, mercy, judgment, and God's future purposes for Israel, Paul bows before the majesty of God. The proper response to God's sovereignty is not pride or argument, but humble worship.
"When believers contemplate God's sovereign plan of redemption, they discover that His wisdom is unfathomable, His knowledge is infinite, His purposes are beyond human scrutiny, and His grace leaves no room for human boasting. The only fitting response is worship."
The thought reaches its climax in Romans 11:36 “For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.”
"For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen."
Verse 36 is the theme of all theology: everything originates with God, is sustained by God, and ultimately exists for the glory of God.
