In Adam we saw that mankind is not capable of earning eternal life -> in fact, we squandered it
In Isaac, we will see that no other person is sufficient as a sacrifice in our place

Son of Promise

Isaac was a promised son to Abraham -> although he had other children, they were not born according to the promise God gave Abraham
Jesus was THE promised seed of Abraham -> also we see some imagery with Abraham when we consider that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God
There are many promises concerning the promised seed of Abraham, and Isaac was a shadow of that seed to come, which was truly Jesus Christ
Abraham was to be father of many nations
In a sense, he is from the various other children that went on to make nations of themselves
In a greater sense, this is fulfilled in Christ who has made whosoever will trust in Christ to be a descendant of Abraham (Gal. 3:26-29)
All the nations of the world are blessed through Abraham’s seed
This is partially seen in God blessing the nations that blessed Israel, and seen even more clearly through the ministry of the church in this world
This is seen most vividly in the offering of salvation to the whole world in Jesus, the promised seed of Abraham
In Isaac, we see a faulty man who was full of mistakes, but he was merely a shadow of the one to come: Jesus Christ, the Messiah!

Humble Son of Sacrifice

The sacrifice of Isaac would have done nothing for the salvation of mankind -> this commandment was clearly to test the faith of Abraham
The unjust suffering for the sins they have committed are simply people suffering a wrath they deserve
In other words, they owe a debt that they pay -> there's nothing left to apply to someone else
For this reason, we cannot expect any other sacrifice to work, nor can we expect to sacrifice for someone else (Rom. 9:1-3)
The sacrifice of the promised lamb of v. 8 has secured salvation for whosoever will trust in Christ
In the immediate event, a ram took Isaac’s place -> in terms of salvation, Jesus (the only begotten Son of God and promised Seed of Abraham) took Isaac’s place
He has taken the place of any sinner who would trust in Jesus Christ, and He stands victorious (1 Jn. 2:1-2; Rev. 5:6)
Though an important figure, the source of much joy to Abraham, and used in the lineage of Christ, Isaac is an insufficient sacrifice
Thank God that Jesus is the true and better Isaac -> the only sacrifice sufficient for the cleansing of sins (Rom. 3:25)
