What is a deacon?

First and foremost, deacons are servants of the church.

Our word “deacon” comes from the Greek word diakonos.

Diakonos means “servant” and the word implies ministering to other people.

The Greek word which the NIV translates four times as “deacon” occurs a further 25 times in the NT, where it is translated as “servant”. It seems that all Christians have a general servant role, whereas some (deacons) are called to a specific office of service within the church.

2. Why do we need deacons?

Jesus was a servant. Matthew 20:28 “Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto (or serve), but to minister (serve), and to give his life a ransom for many.”

The pastor can’t do it all alone.

The church is called to care for others, share the Gospel, be united in the Holy Spirit, provide for widows and orphans, visit the sick and those in prison.
