# BUILT DIFFERENT: A FATHER'S LEGACY THAT LASTS
### Ephesians 6:1-4
## INTRODUCTION
We live in a culture that has a lot to say about manhood.
Some voices say:
"Be successful."
"Make more money."
"Build your career."
"Follow your dreams."
But God asks a different question.
Not...
How much did you earn?
Not...
How many trophies did you collect?
Not...
How many followers did you gain?
But this:
Who are you raising?
Because long after your paycheck is spent...
Long after your accomplishments are forgotten...
Long after your name disappears from a business card...
Your legacy will still be walking around.
In the hearts of your children.
In the character of your family.
In the spiritual direction of the next generation.
And that's why Father's Day matters.
Because God never intended fathers to be spectators in the home.
He designed fathers to be builders.
Builders of faith.
Builders of character.
Builders of future generations.
The Apostle Paul pulls back the curtain in Ephesians 6 and shows us what a God-centered home looks like.
And what we discover is this:
A lasting legacy isn't built by accident. It's built on purpose.

## MOVEMENT 1:
# A CHILD'S RESPONSIBILITY:
## HONOR THE PEOPLE GOD GAVE YOU
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother..."
Paul begins with children.
Why?
Because healthy families are built on healthy relationships.
Notice Paul doesn't simply say obey.
He says honor.
Because obedience is about behavior.
Honor is about attitude.
Obedience is what you do.
Honor is how you see them.
You can obey externally while disrespecting internally.
But honor says:
"I recognize that God placed you in my life."
And then Paul reminds us this command comes with a promise.
Not because parents are perfect.
But because God's design is perfect.
### Illustration
When a child learns to ride a bicycle, Dad runs beside them.
Holding the seat.
Giving instruction.
Offering correction.
The child doesn't always understand why.
Sometimes Dad says slow down.
Sometimes Dad says brake.
Sometimes Dad says turn.
But years later the child realizes:
Those instructions weren't restrictions.
They were protection.
Honor is trusting God's placement before you understand God's purpose.
### Application
Young people:
You may not agree with every decision.
You may not understand every rule.
But God says honor matters.
And adults:
Honor doesn't end when childhood ends.
Some of us need to pick up the phone.
Write the letter.
Have the conversation.
Honor is still God's design.

## MOVEMENT 2:
# A FATHER'S INFLUENCE:
## YOU ARE BUILDING MORE THAN YOU REALIZE
"Honor thy father and mother..."
Today I want to speak directly to the dads.
Because fathers carry a weight that culture often ignores.
Research tells us something Scripture has always taught:
When a father is present, engaged, and spiritually invested...
Children thrive.
But beyond the statistics...
There is something deeper.
A father's influence often becomes the lens through which children view authority, security, and even God Himself.
Dad...
Your children are watching.
They're watching how you handle pressure.
How you treat their mother.
How you speak to people.
How you respond when life gets hard.
You may think they're not paying attention.
But they are.
### Illustration
A father is like a thermostat.
Whatever temperature he sets eventually influences the whole house.
If he brings anger...
The home feels it.
If he brings peace...
The home feels it.
If he brings faith...
The home feels it.
Your presence sets the atmosphere.
### Pastoral Moment
Some fathers are carrying regret today.
You missed moments.
Made mistakes.
Lost your temper.
Were absent when you should have been present.
Hear me clearly:
God's grace is greater than your failures.
The enemy wants you stuck in guilt.
Jesus wants you moving forward in grace.
You cannot rewrite yesterday.
But by God's power you can influence tomorrow.

## MOVEMENT 3:
# A FATHER'S WARNING:
## DON'T BREAK WHAT GOD CALLED YOU TO BUILD
"And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath..."
Notice Paul addresses fathers specifically.
Because God has entrusted fathers with enormous influence.
And with influence comes responsibility.
The word "provoke" means to stir up frustration, resentment, discouragement, and anger.
Paul is saying:
Don't parent in a way that crushes the heart of your child.
### How Fathers Provoke
Harshness without tenderness.
Correction without encouragement.
Rules without relationship.
Expectations without grace.
Constant criticism.
Never expressing affection.
Always pointing out failures.
Never celebrating growth.
You can win every argument and still lose your child.
### Powerful Statement
Children rarely rebel against rules.
They often rebel against disconnected relationships.
### Application
Dad, if the only time your child hears your voice is when they've done something wrong...
Something is broken.
If they know your standards but don't know your heart...
Something is broken.
If they fear disappointing you more than they desire to please God...
Something is broken.
God never called us to dominate our children.
He called us to disciple them.

## MOVEMENT 4:
# A FATHER'S MISSION:
## LEAD THEM TO JESUS
"But bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."
This is the goal.
Not successful kids.
Not athletic kids.
Not popular kids.
Not merely moral kids.
Godly kids.
The phrase "bring them up" means to nourish, develop, and intentionally cultivate.
In other words:
Don't just provide for them.
Pastor them.
### Two Responsibilities
### 1. Discipline of the Lord
Training.
Boundaries.
Correction.
Guidance.
Not punishment driven by anger.
Direction driven by love.
### 2. Instruction of the Lord
Teaching truth.
Opening Scripture.
Talking about God.
Praying together.
Showing them what faith looks like on Monday morning.
The greatest thing a father can leave his children isn't money.
It's a living faith in Jesus Christ.
### Illustration
Many fathers spend years building retirement accounts.
Investment portfolios.
Properties.
Businesses.
And none of those things are wrong.
But one day all of it stays behind.
The only thing that crosses into eternity is people.
The greatest investment you'll ever make is sitting around your table right now.
---
## CLOSING CHALLENGE
One day your children will leave your house.
One day they'll make decisions without asking you.
One day they'll face hardship, temptation, marriage, parenting, and life.
And when that day comes...
What will they carry with them?
Will they remember a father who pointed them toward Jesus?
Will they remember a man who loved God?
Will they remember grace?
Will they remember truth?
Will they remember faith?
Because whether you realize it or not...
You're building something every day.
The question is:
What are you building?
---
## GOSPEL LANDING
The truth is...
No father gets this right all the time.
We've all failed.
We've all missed moments.
We've all spoken words we wish we could take back.
That's why we need Jesus.
Jesus is the perfect Son who honored His Father perfectly.
Jesus is the perfect Savior who died for imperfect fathers.
And because of the cross, your failures don't have to define your future.
There is forgiveness.
There is grace.
There is restoration.
There is hope.
And there is power to become the man God has called you to be.
---
## INVITATION
Today:
Some children need to honor.
Some fathers need to repent.
Some families need to heal.
Some men need to recommit themselves to spiritual leadership.
And some need to trust Jesus Christ as Savior.
Because the greatest legacy you can leave your family...
Is not your success.
Not your possessions.
Not your accomplishments.
It's your faith.
## MEMORABLE CLOSE
A father's greatest legacy is not what he leaves for his children—it's what he leaves in his children.
