The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Shepherds tend their sheep. They consistently spend time among the sheep, enough that the sheep can tell the difference between their voice and the voices of other people. The sheep will not listen to direction from those who aren’t the shepherd.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
There are some who present themselves as shepherds, but when the sheep come under attack they are nowhere to be found, or worse, they participate in harming the flock. In such cases they join or become the wolves they were supposed to protect against.
Our shepherd, Jesus, has already laid His life down for His sheep. He gave Himself in our place to pay the price that sin demands. In so doing, He now guards, guides, and leads each of us.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Are you isolated? Lost or wandering? Hungry? Have you been injured along the way, whether by yourself, by the enemy of your soul, or fellow imperfect image-bearers of our Father? Come to the altar; call on the Father and allow Him to nourish you.
