Power of compassion

Luke 14:1–6 NKJV

Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. ) And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. Then He answered them, saying, “Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” And they could not answer Him regarding these things.

But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. “And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. “Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. “But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. “On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’ “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same.”

So who is our neighbor ? our church members, physical neighbor, those we like , those that look like us those that vote like us who who is our neighbor

Why?

Love because God loved us, be compassionate and graceful as he has been towards us

1. Jesus calls to us to Stand Firm but remain Compassionate, loving, kind

(Modern day we call this Edema a symptom of heart failure or liver failure where your body retains a lot of excess fluid and its very uncomfortable

Look how Jesus first stood his ground in front of religious scholars, Sometimes we just say we will pray our giants of life our critics the ones who condemn our faith

Sometimes we as Christians need to grow a back bone and stand firm for what is right .

For Jesus it was this man

He was more important than the Law the Pharisee made the law of the sabbath a religious burden God intended it to be a day of rest and restoration. This man was in need of both rest and restoration

I want you to remember two things

because there is allot of chatter on line I worry will confuse our youth teens and young adults

allot of keeping the sabbath is becoming popular again as I watch a new wave of legalism creep in online I need you to remember 2 things regarding the sabbath

Sabbath was made for the man to rest , not man made for the sabbath

Jesus is out sabbath in him we find rest he is the fulfillment of the law and it is in him we find peace not in a day

does resting once a week beneficial absolutely medical science says that those who rest consistently once a week live on average 8-15 years longer than those who don't.

boldness required to prioritize compassion. Look at the tension in the room with the Pharisees' scrutiny, setting up the challenge of societal expectations versus Gods calling. r?

Would you stand bold in the face of your friends that are mocking and making fun of a weaker kid, would you stand firm for a employee that is being treated unfairly ?

2. Seize Opportunities for Healing

Luke 14:3–4 NASB95

And Jesus answered and spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away.

Focus on Jesus' decisive action in healing the man despite the watching eyes of the Pharisees.

Through acts of grace mercy and compassion towards one another the greatest moments seem to happen

I encourage you to seize moments of opportunity to act boldly in love, even when facing criticism. Jesus' question prior to the healing highlights human legalism versus Gods mercy.

3. Silence with Loving Truth

Luke 14:5–6 NASB95

And He said to them, “Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?” And they could make no reply to this.

To wrap up Look how Jesus deftly exposes the inconsistency and hypocrisy in valuing legal norms over compassion

What is the hypocrisy in your life you need to lay down today

What rules or traditions or friends are keeping you from doing what God is calling you to do

Lay it down right here today

And embrace His love His mercy His Grace and pour back out unto your neighbor what he has poured into you
