Introduction to Message

A MESSAGE THAT CHANGES LIVES!!!❤️😁

In 1930s Nazi Germany, the Christian church faced a terrible choice.

Not whether to stop believing in Jesus.

But whether they would compromise enough to survive.

Their priority was survival.

The Nazi regime did not initially demand that churches close their doors.

It did not begin by outlawing sermons or banning worship.

Instead, it offered something much more dangerous:

Coexistence.

All the church had to do was remain silent.

Stay politically quiet.

Avoid confrontation.

Adjust a few doctrines.

Remove parts of the teaching that offended the government.

Blend national-socialism with Christianity.

and Accept what culture demanded.

Most churches did.

Pastors hung Nazi flags in sanctuaries.

Crosses were replaced with swastikas.

Then the German state began shaping the message of the church.

And slowly, compromise became normal.

But one young pastor refused to bow,

refused to compromise his faith.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer saw what was happening.

He understood that when the church compromises truth

to preserve comfort,

it ceases to be the church.

Bonhoeffer famously wrote:

When Christ calls a man he bids him come and die.

He also warned:

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless.”

While many churches adjusted themselves to the spirit of the age,

Bonhoeffer stood firm.

He resisted Hitler,

helped underground seminaries train pastors faithfully,

and eventually was imprisoned for his opposition to the Nazi regime.

On the morning of April 9, 1945,

just weeks before the end of World War II,

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was led from his prison cell at Flossenbürg concentration camp

to be executed by hanging.

A prison doctor who witnessed the execution later described what he saw.

I QUOTE:

“Through the half-open door in one room of the barracks, I saw Pastor Bonhoeffer, before taking off his prison garb, kneeling on the floor praying fervently to his God. I was most deeply moved by the way this lovable man prayed, so devout and so certain that God heard his prayer.”

The doctor continued:

“At the place of execution, he again said a short prayer and then climbed the steps to the gallows, brave and composed. His death ensued in a few seconds.”

Then came the statement that has echoed through history:

“In the almost fifty years that I worked as a doctor, I have hardly ever seen a man die so entirely submissive to the will of God.”

Those guards had seen fear.

They had seen rage.

They had seen men curse God as they faced death.

But in Bonhoeffer, they saw something different:

peace,

conviction,

and unwavering faithfulness.

WHY DID HE LOSE HIS LIFE?

Because he refused to compromise.

Story or Quote (with history)

Pergamum contained temples dedicated to multiple deities—Asclepius, Athena, Dionysius, Demeter, and Zeus (40 ft statue)

making it possibly the most openly pagan city mentioned in Revelation 2 and 3.

It served as an official center of the imperial cult

emperor worship

many commentators identify the imperial cult as the referent for “Satan’s throne,” (ROME’s power, represented in Rev by ‘the beast)

I don’t buy that. Rome is not going to rise.

I believe Islam is what is the threat in the last days.

I do believe that Satan stands behind the beast wielding authority over the world.

And where is Purgamum?

In what is now known as The Republic of Turkey (a predominantly Islamic country).

Churches that once stood brightly for Christ can disappear over time

when faith weakens,

compromise grows, and

future generations abandon the gospel.

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE CHART

AND SEE WHAT IT TELLS US.

This is a church set in the midst of what Jesus refers to as ‘Satans Throne’

Idol worship

Sexual rituals.

Temples and Serpent depictions all over the city.

A difficult place for a church.

Time in Peru.

Cusco

Pagan mixed with Catholisim

few Christian churches.

Sense of oppression.

Compromise by the church.

Each of the seven letters opens with titles drawn from John’s vision of Christ’s heavenly ministry1,

related to the specific spiritual conditions facing each church.

operates on two interconnected levels:

the titles authenticate Christ’s authority to speak into each community’s particular struggles,

Reveals which aspect of his character addresses their need.

For believers today, the titles reveal Christ’s multifaceted character available to address contemporary struggles.

Christ walks among his churches (among the lapstands)

as a chastening authority

sanctify His church.

These titles tell us that He can address any and all of our struggles, concerns, adversities.

Which title applies to our circumstance

his presence,

his resurrection power,

his authority, or

his judgment—

connects us with God.

His titles demonstrate His power, authority, love, compassion, and forgiveness (redemption).

Hebrews 4:12–13 ESV

12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

The Greek word for two edged is δίστομος (distomos)

two-sided, or

two mouths

The two-edged sword is the Word of God that proceeds from Jesus Christ.

It represents both

the written word

the spoken word

It also addresses a dual crisis in the Pergamum church.

External persecution

Internal compromise.

This crisis is prevalent in the church today.

There is both

governmental hostility at all levels against the church.

social persecution which manifests itself in the forms of

legal restrictions,

social marginalization, or

physical danger

Attacks against Christians and Christian churches is on the rise.

Even worse . . . As they did in the churches in 1930s and 1940s in Germany.

Churches acquiescing to societal pressures

in their tolerations

in their compromises

even in their doctrines.

MORE THAN EVER . . . WE NEED TO STAND STRONG

IN OUR BELIEFS

IN OUR COMMITMENT

IN OUR BODY OF BELIEVERS.

WE MUST.

Let’s look at Jesus’ COMMENDATION OF THIS CHURCH.

Revelation 2:13 ESV

13 “ ‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.

He starts, as in the other letters, with I KNOW (because HE DOES).

Satan’s throne we have leaned

Pergamum was the seat of

Pagan rituals

Emperor worship.

Sexual immorality.

Jesus commended the church for remaining faithful.

HOWEVER, it was not like the church at Smyrna

as we shall see.

He referred to a man named Antipas as a ‘faithful witness’.

This is a title that Jesus also assumes in Rev 1:5 and Rev 3:14.

Identifies Jesus’ testimony as a witness before God who gave His life for us.

Jesus before Pilate tells us FOR WHAT PURPOSE He came into the world AS A WITNESS.

IF SOMEONE ASKS YOU WHY DID JESUS COME INTO THE WORLD, HE TELLS US RIGHT HERE.

John 18:37 ESV

37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

It doesn’t get any clearer than this.

He came as a witness, bearing TRUTH.

Antipas and other subsequent witnesses are patterned after Jesus in his willingness to live and speak the truth even at the cost of his own life.

THIS IS A CALL TO EVERY ONE OF US.

Don’t listen to what the world is trying to peddle.

SEEK THE TRUTH IN JESUS CHRIST.

HE IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE.

But Pergamum compromised.

And Jesus REBUKED them.

Revelation 2:14–15 ESV

14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. 15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

The common thread for both Balaam and the Nicolaitans was the tempting of the church towards idol worship and sexual immorality.

Some in the Pergamum church were participating in both.

And the church tolerated this.

AND THEY COMPROMISED

They let sin enter their Church’

“Well, everyone else is doing it.”

NO NO NO. NOT EVERYONE.

THERE IS THE FAITHFUL REMNANT.

“We have to be loving and accept them for who they are.”

NO WE DON’T!!!

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT JESUS SAID WOULD HAPPEN IN THE LAST DAYS!

Luke 17:1–2 ESV

1 And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.

This is the verse that would concern me the most.

...woe to the one through whom they come!

The accommodation Pergamum made to pagan culture parallels modern churches in striking ways.

Contemporary Christians constantly face temptation to compromise and adopt surrounding cultural values.

HOW?

fear of social disapproval.

ostracism.

loss of employment if one speaks truth.

creating an environment where

silence feels safer than conviction.

The compromises manifest across specific moral issues including

abortion,

homosexuality,

cohabitation,

immodest clothing,

violent entertainment,

gambling, and

GREED (the love of money)

Schools and universities (even schools here in Warden) are affected.

I haven’t been here long, but I know some of the things going on in our schools.

social conformity

placing undue pressure

on public school students

to conform to secular values.

The false teachers in Pergamum advocated compromise with surrounding culture

to avoid social embarrassment,

evade persecution, and

gain economic advantage—

AND IT WORKED.

they experienced prosperity precisely because they blended in with idolatrous culture.

Today’s equivalent appears in churches

that selectively silence biblical teaching on unpopular topics or

gradually align moral standards with secular culture rather than Scripture.

THIS DOCTRINE CAN PERMEATE OUR OWN THINKING AS BELIEVERS.

A pastor asked his congregation,

"How many of you would be offended if a man and woman walked into the church service right now and began passionately kissing in the front row?"

Nearly every hand went up.

Then he asked, "How many of you would be offended if they removed more and more clothing while continuing their embrace?"

Again, the congregation was shocked.

He continued with several increasingly inappropriate scenarios.

Finally he asked:

"Then why do we invite those same things into our living rooms every night through our televisions and call it entertainment?"

This letter to the church at Pergamum (and others) is designed to motivate hearers to reject compromise and embrace sacrificial discipleship.

The challenge for modern believers involves recognizing how subtly accommodation operates—

not through dramatic idolatry

but through incremental cultural assimilation

that erodes distinctive Christian witness.

HOW DOES JESUS REACT TO THAT?

Revelation 2:16 NASB95

16 ‘Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth.

THE CALL TO REPENT

is Severe!!!!

and quick.

The urgency of “quickly” signals that this is not a distant threat

but an imminent reality.

The sword represents divine judgment against rebellion.

This sword is God’s judgment

against rebellious nations

and all forms of sin.

First, it addresses the false teachers directly:

compromise with idolatry and immorality will not go unchallenged.

Second, it confronts the congregation’s passive tolerance of these errors.

By allowing false doctrine to flourish unchecked,

the church itself becomes complicit and

subject to Christ’s judgment.

PROMISE TO THE OVERCOMER

Revelation 2:17 NASB95

17 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.’

Again we see this phrase . . .

‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Again, separating the Hearers from the Doers.

Those who respond to these letters,

Receive the BLESSING of the PROMISE to the OVERCOMER.

And note, the last word is CHURCHES.

It’s plural.

Jesus writes this to all the churches.

There are two gifts in this promise.

The Hidden Manna

A White Stone

WHAT ARE THESE?

Hidden Manna

The hidden manna represents

spiritual nourishment promised to those who remain victorious against compromise.

For Pergamum’s believers,

those refusing to participate in pagan feasts were promised manna that would satisfy hunger and bring blessing.

White Stone

Winning athletes in biblical times received white stones

serving as admission passes to celebration,

suggesting the faithful believer’s white stone points to

admittance into eternal life in heaven.

Summary

"The church at Pergamum lived in the shadow of Satan's throne —

surrounded by emperor worship,

pagan temples,

and a culture that said 'just blend in,

just stay quiet,

just survive.'

And some of them did.

They compromised.

They accommodated.

And Jesus looked them in the eye and said,

'I have a few things against you.'

But here's what I don't want you to miss —

He also said, 'I know where you dwell.'

He saw them.

He knew the pressure they were under.

And He still called them to more.

You and I are not so different from Pergamum.

We are not being asked to bow to a statue of Caesar.

But we are being asked every single day —

by our culture,

by our screens,

by social media

by our friends and families

by our workplaces,

by the spirit of this age —

to be just a little quieter.

To soften just one more truth.

To let just one more thing slide.

Bonhoeffer didn't have a political strategy.

Antipas didn't have a platform.

They both had a Person — Jesus Christ —

and a decision to remain faithful to Him no matter the cost.

So before you walk out those doors today,

I want to leave you with five practical steps.

Not five suggestions.

Five commitments.

Because standing firm is not just a feeling you have in a church service on a Sunday morning.

It's a decision you make

on Monday morning,

on Tuesday afternoon,

and Wednesday night

when nobody's watching.

We don’t want to be hearers only—

we want to be doers.

We don’t want to admire Antipas—

we want to imitate his faith.

We don’t want to fear the culture—

we want to stand firm in the middle of it.

Here's how you stand firm..."

Step 1: Know the Word — Read Our Bible Daily

"The sharp two-edged sword" (Rev. 2:12) is your weapon against compromise.

ARE SOME OFTHESE SOUNDING FAMILIAR.

God is not asking us these things.

This is HIS COMMANDMENT.

This is HIS WILL.

This is NOT OPTIONAL for the TRUE BELIEVER.

We need to commit to a daily Scripture reading plan.

The false teachers in Pergamum gained a foothold because people were not grounded in truth.

You cannot recognize a counterfeit without knowing the real thing.

There are many plans and programs on apps such as You Version, or many other Bible reading apps.

Step 2: Pray Without Ceasing — Build a Prayer Life

Like Bonhoeffer on his knees in that prison cell, prayer is what keeps you anchored when the world is closing in.

Set a daily prayer time — even 10–15 minutes.

Remember that Bonhoeffer's unshakeable peace in the face of execution came from a life of prayer.

Set a time each day.

morning prayer,

journaling prayers,

or use the Lord's Prayer as a framework.

The Lord’s prayer tells us HOW TO PRAY...

NOT WHAT TO PRAY.

Step 3: Guard What You Let In — Be Watchful

"Why do we invite those same things into our living rooms every night through our televisions and call it entertainment?"

It’s not just entertainment.

This is the same for social media, gaming, and other media platforms.

When we’re engaged with these things we need to ask.

Does this align me with Christ or with culture?

Step 4: Fellowship and Accountability — Don't Stand Alone

Bonhoeffer didn't resist alone — he built the Confessing Church and trained pastors in underground seminaries.

Isolating Christians are compromising Christians.

If we sense that we are isolated,

join a small group,

find an accountability partner,

get plugged into a Bible study.

The church is not just a place you attend —

it's a community you belong to.

Step 5: Speak Up — Be a Faithful Witness Like Antipas

"Silence in the face of evil is itself evil." — Bonhoeffer

This is the most convicting step and a powerful callback to both Bonhoeffer and Antipas.

Jesus called Antipas "my faithful witness" —

Its the same title He holds for Himself (Rev. 1:5).

We need to ask ourselves, where in our lives are we staying silent to keep the peace?

At work?

In our families?

On social media?

Being a faithful witness doesn't mean being combative — it means being true.

As it says in...

58 Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.

Next Sunday we move to the fourth letter — the church at Thyatira.

And I want to warn you ahead of time:

this one is going to hit close to home.

Thyatira wasn't a church full of pagans or emperor worshippers.

It was a church that loved God,

served others,

and was growing in faith.

And Jesus still had something serious to say to them.

Why?

Because they tolerated one person.

One voice.

One influence —

and it was slowly poisoning everything.

Summary

The question for us this morning is not whether Pergamum compromised.

The question is whether we are.

Church, I am not concerned that we will wake up tomorrow and suddenly deny Christ.

What concerns me is something far more dangerous.

That we slowly drift.

That we become comfortable with what God calls sin. That we become silent when God calls us to speak. That we become entertained by what Christ died to save us from.

Pergamum didn't fall in a single day. Compromise never works that way.

It happens one step at a time.

The difference wasn't their location. The difference wasn't their culture. The difference was their relationship with Christ.

And that is still true today.

If we are going to stand firm against Satan's throne in our generation, if we are going to resist the pressures of this culture, if we are going to remain faithful when truth becomes unpopular, then we cannot simply identify compromise.

The answer is drawing closer to Christ.

The closer we walk with Christ, the more clearly we recognize error. The more deeply we love Christ, the less attractive compromise becomes.

May we never surrender the crown that Christ has promised to those who overcome.

And when our generation is finished, may it be said of us as it was of Antipas:

"They held fast the name of Jesus and did not deny the faith."

May God grant us the courage to stand firm against Satan's throne.

"Church, go into this week knowing that Jesus walks among the lampstands. He sees where you dwell. He knows the pressure you are under. And He has not left you alone.

May you be so rooted in His Word that compromise finds no foothold in your heart.

May your prayer life be so real that — like Bonhoeffer in that prison cell — even the world around you can see that you know the God you serve.

May you guard what enters your mind, your home, and your heart — and may the Spirit of God give you the courage to say no to what the culture calls normal and yes to what God calls holy.

May you find your people — those who will stir you up, hold you accountable, and refuse to let you drift.

And may you be a faithful witness — like Antipas, like Bonhoeffer — willing to speak the name of Jesus clearly and without apology, whatever the cost.

You are not promised a white stone because you were comfortable. You are promised a white stone because you overcame.

So go — be steadfast, be immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord — knowing that in Him, your labor is never, ever in vain.

1. Opening Prayer (Variable)

Heavenly Father,

We come before You with grateful hearts, remembering the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ. As we partake of this bread and cup, we proclaim His death until He comes again (1 Corinthians 11:26). Cleanse us from sin, renew our hearts, and help us approach this Table with reverence and faith. Thank You for the cross, for the blood that was shed, and for the grace that saves.

May this meal strengthen our unity, deepen our love for Christ, and stir our hope in His return. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Like the condemned prisoners who are often given a final meal before their execution, Jesus, too, shared one last meal before His death. Soon He would be betrayed, falsely condemned, and crucified for crimes He did not commit. He would be arrested, beaten, mocked, and killed. Yet He willingly endured this suffering for us, securing redemption for all who believe and instituting this sacred remembrance. As we partake, let us remember the cross and the love that led Him there. Let us take a moment to examine ourselves, repent of our sins, and come to the table with renewed faith, gratitude, and reverence.

Gracious Father,

As we sit in stillness before You, we thank You for the body and blood of Christ, given for us. May the gospel we have just proclaimed through this meal dwell richly in our hearts. Strengthen our faith, deepen our repentance, and renew our love for You and for one another.

Help us leave this Table not unchanged, but resolved to walk in holiness, bearing fruit in keeping with our salvation, until Christ returns in glory. To you be all glory and honor and praise.
