“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

The first half of the scripture Jesus’ touched the relationship between the Son and believers
As Jesus continues His prayer how does He continue,
He prays by PROCLAMATION
and what is he proclaiming?
He is proclaiming a certain function of all Creation
Everything originates from the Father
Everything comes from the Father
In this passage specifically what is the Jesus talking about comes from Father?
His Disciples, believers
The Father gave them over to Jesus out of the world.
Now the bible refers to the world a lot in this passage so it is important we understand the intended meaning of this reference.
There are a lot of people, some of them biblically illiterate Pastors who will assume that the world even within this passage means nonbelievers
That is not what Jesus is referring to in this passage.
The world is spoken about in a negative connotation in reference to it’s dominant characteristics
Sin, sinful actions, sinful ideologies
The world not naturally sinful simply dominated by sin, in opposition with God
So you have people who have been called out, then you have a divide of people who have obeyed the words of God, and those who continued in opposition.
Those who do not listen, become of the world again.
Some people look at John 17:9
I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
And say, “Well since Jesus clearly isn’y praying for the world, He doesn’t care about the people who are of the world”
Clearly that’s not the case because as we will see next week, Jesus’ final part of His prayer is playing for believers who don’t know Him yet, those who are currently of the world
Why is this so important?
I’ll tell you why…
We confuse the target for the enemy.
We see the people of the world and identify them as the world, rather than them dominated by the characteristics
Then while we claim to hate the sin, love the sinner in the same breath we refuse to associate with the sinner.
We say thats not true Pastor but we can’t have conversation with someone that doesn’t align with us politically.
We say that’s not true Pastor but we can’t spare a few bucks and some change with the homeless and pray for them as we walk past them on the street
We say that’s not true but our co-worker that needs Jesus is a little bit of an odd ball so we refuse to invite him to church or share the gospel because we are embarrassed to be around him.
We say that’s not true Pastor but when push comes to shove we always stay here rather then go there
And hears the sad thing, there probably many of you who heard my examples and maybe that thing happened to you this week and you immediately had an excuse for why it was more loving to do the alternative
If you have to rationalize love, it’s not Godly love, it’s a man-made copy-cat
God created love and it operates not just within our “internal morality” it operate within these very covers.
What does Jesus say about the sinner
All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.
Who are the Father’s, and Jesus’ former habitual sinners, who now are trying to do a little less rebellion and how does Jesus say He sees them.
He is glorified in them
Jesus take glory in former habitual sinners
I don’t know about you but when I read that I was like, wow!
It is one thing to love, to be involved with, it is another to take glory with people who love you but at the end of the day rebel against.
So if Jesus takes glory in me that disappoints Him no matter how hard I try not to, how much more should I love someone who used to be in my place
That place isn’t whatever sin your thinking about it is pride - it is rebellion against God.
Jesus continues his prayer with John 17:11-12
And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
Jesus is leaving, but His heart is still with the believers.
In fact He asks the Father to remember them and keep them in His name
For as Jesus guarded them and now the Father guards us.
For one was lost, Judas, the one doomed to destruction by His own free will.
While we are guarded, we are not held captive
Just because you have given your life to Christ doesn’t not mean your free will has been revoked.
There comes a point in growing up when children obtain more and more free will *** General Story***
Jesus’ mind is concerned with you, but is your mind concerned with Him.
And with Jesus leaving, continues to request from the Father things that concern the believers
But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
This passage has gone from relationship between Jesus and Believer to a relationship between Believers and the World
Jesus is with the disciples now so they have the full measure of His joy
Now that He has given the disciples and given us His word, what is the result, the world responds with hating believers
The prayer is not that the Father takes them out of this world, but that He protects them from the evil one

The biggest killer to faith is refusing to give God the right to say no
God don’t lead me here, No
God take this person out of my life, No
God keep this person in my life, No
God get me out, No
God don’t let my kid go down this path they are going to get hurt, No
When we refuse to give God the ability to say no, we limit our ability to grow our faith.
Some of you need to hear that God has your right where your suppose to be.
That the season you are resisting and pushing back from is the very place He wants you to be
That you are going to have a powerful testimony of how He will protect through a situation that everyone has told you to run from
Some of us need to be reminded that we are safer in the fire with God, then on anywhere else without God
If you resist the trail you’ll also resist the testimony
They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
Sanctified means to be set apart.
To be set apart comes with be ostracized.
Am I willing to be Sanctified?
Am I willing to give God the ability to say no
That’s a dangerous game I’ll tell you right now.
Tell God, for this summer, I won’t say
For the rest of the summer, heck for the rest of the summer, give God the ability to say no in your life
No to your requests, no to your pleads, no to your demands
I’ll tell you this He will push you, it’ll be difficult, the purification is not meant to be comfortable, but
I can promise you this, He will give you a testimony, He will show you His goodness, He will give you a story to tell if you’ll let Him
This is my challenge, give God the ability to say no to you this summer.
