Christ, the True and Better Aaron (Heb. 9:24-28)

Adam showed us that we needed a better Adam to reverse the curse of sin

Isaac showed us that we needed God to provide Himself a lamb for sacrifice

Moses showed us that we need God to be a mediator of a better covenant

Aaron shows us that we need a better high priest to mediate on our behalf

A Sinless Priest

Aaron, although the spokesman of Moses and the first high priest, was as flawed a man as we are

The high priest was offering sacrifice for other people’s sins, yet he had sin that needed to be atoned for first (Lev. 16:1-6)

This was a system which man failed because of their sin, and as a result Israel suffered (sons of Eli - 1 Sam 2:12-17)

Sinful priests can lead astray -> just consider what Aaron did with the golden calf, as well as the consequences for it

Jesus is a priest who needs no cleansing of Himself, for He is perfect!

As such, His priestly performance is perfect on our behalf -> He will never fail or take advantage of those He mediates for

A Heavenly Priest (v. 24)

There is a great difference in Aaron and his descendants and our Great High Priest in the place they enter into

The earthly high priests entered into a place they did not ordinarily belong

The earthly high priests also could only enter into an earthly tabernacle/temple on this earth -> a shadow of what was to come

Jesus, our Great High Priest, intercedes for us in heaven, before the presence of the Father directly!

Our access to God is not limited by our priest mediating from heaven to earth!

A Royal Priest

In Israel, there was a delineating line between the priest and the king -> it was not possible to be both (1 Sam. 13:8-14)

Jesus is referred to as a priest after the order of Melchizedek -> the king of Salem and priest of the most high God without beginning or end

Our priest has absolute control for all of eternity -> He is priest and king! (Heb. 7:11-25)

A Great High Priest

It may seem like such an esteemed priest would be unable to relate to those He ministers to, but this is not the case

Wonderfully, Jesus is a great high priest! (Heb. 4:14-16)

In every way, Jesus is a true and better Aaron, which is exactly the priest we need (Heb. 7:26-28)
